Kevin Kelly - works from the Devon Meadows Dog Swimming Pool on Stanley Road, Devon Meadows each Wednesday from 4-6pm. Can't make appointments, though. He'll only see a max of 20 dogs and it's a case of first in best dressed. Once the list is full, that's it for that day. The pool opens at 2.00pm and you take a punt - either get there at 2.00pm and be assured of a place, but then wait until 4.00pm until Kevin arrives, or arrive at 4.00pm with the very real possibility he'll already have his 'quota' for the day.

Awkward, I know, but having been to a couple of chiro's (Barry included) I find Kevin excellent and worth the inconvenience. He blocks nerves with his fingers so my girl has never felt any discomfort. He's the only 'medical' professional that Kal doesn't quake in front of. (And for my dog, that's saying something!).

$15.00 per visit, so he's not expensive. He's not a Vet, but has what seems to be a good amount of Veterinary knowledge and talks a lot of sense. He has an excellent following and many breeders/competitors travel somewhat large distances to see him. (I know of some that have come from Bendigo, for example.)

And now I feel he should pay me for this rap. No - I don't work for him.

I agree with Kimjim - qualifications essential

If you are prepared to travel here in Morwell we have superb Vet who also holds a Masters Degree in Veterinary Chiropractics( only 2 people in Oz have this qual.)

She is also very gentle with the dogs.

Pm me if you want furhter info

Slightly OT, but just wanted to say it's worth going to Devon Meadows just for the swimming. My two tried it out when I was in Melbourne over Christmas. Dogs are swimming at people waist level, rather than below your feet - mor fun for them, I think, and the pool is designed with curves to ensure dogs work both sides more or less evenly, unlike the regular lap pool. (Mind you, they enjoyed their swim at Doveton, too.)

Erny, thanks for the info as well. I didn't even realise there was a doggy pool in Devon Meadows.

If you need it, the Devon Meadows Dog Swimming Pool telephone number is 5998 2982.

And "NO", you're not allowed to ring up and ask THEM to put your name down on the list to see Kevin Kelly (just in case you thought you might) - you HAVE to do that yourself ...

... I must admit I think Barry Heywood is better for this.  One of the advantages of using ... Barry is that IF there is xrays or medication needed they, as Vets are able to cater for this.

I was referred to Barry by Alex Haller who used to practice in Dandenong. Part way through Kal's treatment, Alex became seriously ill and had to give up the practice. I then went to Barry. Kal had complications - a combo of irritable bowel which made her arch her back with the pain, which in turn put her back out, over time. Barry manipulated Kal - (it was the most painful manipulation she'd yet experienced) and instructed me to keep Kal on medication (cortisone) for a certain period of time. (I had informed Barry that she was already on the meds and it wasn't working to ease the IBS). I was to call Barry back in (i think it was) 2 weeks. I did so (to tell him Kal was no better) .... he didn't speak to me, but passed a message to tell me that he was too busy and didn't really have the time to deal with her medical problem.

That's when I searched and found Kevin Kelly.

Just to finish the story, I dealt with the IBS pretty much on my own, but with some help from Dr. Bruce Syme, who is a Vet in Castlemain (he produces "Vets All Natural" products.) It wasn't the V.A.N. that I kept her on - but he gave me some advice on foodstuffs (natural) to feed to help treat/control the IBS.

Erny,

I'm sorry to hear this was your experience and I do believe it is not good enough. I know Barry's first and foremost interest is the chiropractic area but that is no excuse for that attitude.

I went to Barry in part because he was close by - literally at the end of the street I worked in but since he moved to Cranbourne have not been to him.

I must say though I only have good reports about him but as with everything one can only go on what one finds.

Thanks Curlyking - I agree, you can only go by how you 'find' a person. I know there's a lot of people who speak highly of him (Barry). Through my experience, I felt very let down. I think many of Alex Haller's patients were referred over to Barry when Alex became ill (very sad thing too ... Alex was one of the first people to acknowledge I wasn't being paranoid and that there WAS something wrong with Kal, and helped me to work towards a resolution - a lovely caring person to boot) and I think perhaps Barry became too busy too quickly. Maybe he's 'settled' down again by now, but you're right .... we were brushed off with very little interest and that shouldn't have happened. If he'd told me he ONLY was interested in the chiropractic side of things and not the veterinary side of things, I wouldn't have gone there, but I had been assured he could look after both.

Never mind - so long as he's doing good for many others, I guess that's the main thing.

ok in Barry's defense I know from experience him and Alex were always very very busy men after they left Narre Warren Vet Clinic it was to be able to spend more time on their chiro treatments when Alex became ill Barry would have had to cope with the work load of 2 men and believe me that could mean checkeng many dogs in one day.

I know that this does not excuse the way you were treated but just to try and explain what the situation is probarly like for him

Kimjm .... I think I already offered this up as a possible cause for the way I was treated. But thanks for the explanation anyway. :happydance2:

I know what it's like to be busy - at one point of time, I was working 114 hours a week (I kid you not.) But if I took the work on, I never aborted it part way through. And the line of work I was in at the time had no relation to an animal's health.

I don't think there is a suitable defence in this case, but I accept that's probably WHY he did it.

On the other side of the coin I know of a dog doing agility with an injury only Barry was able to diagnose correctly and fix.

I know what you say, here, Helen. I've also gone to professionals that others haven't thought much of but with whom I've had success. That's why I think it's a case of "what works for you and your dog". Barry has a good following, as I mentioned in my earlier post - he wouldn't have achieved that if he was all bad. However, I don't think it unfair of me to post of my experience (not that anyone suggested that I was unfair). Chances are, Kal's case has (and is still) a bit of a 'curly' and he was too busy to dedicate the time to help me sort it out. Bad timing, perhaps. :happydance2: Although he was, IMO, particularly rough in his skeletal manipulation. Maybe I just have that sort of 'dumb luck' with trying to find professionals who can really (want to) help us out.

I have been to George, Kevin, Alan (the one who wears overalls) and another one (cant remember his name) but I have found the best one of all to be Tony in Hampton Park.

He definitely helps my psycho dogs. All they ever seem to do is race around madly and smash into each other all the time and knock their backs, legs, shoulders you name it out of place.

They really should be wrapped in cotton wool and kept in the display cabinet in between shows :happydance2:

Ah well what do you do? Gotta love em!

I find that very strange :happydance2:

I have been taking all my dogs to Barry for years, easily 8 years now, and I have never had anything like this happen. He has always been very polite and taken the time out needed for my dogs. If he did happen to be busy and couldn't stop to talk on the phone - he always told the girls at reception to apologise for him and what to say.

He has always been very open and discussed what he thought he could or could not help my dogs with.
