scat35 Posted February 3, 2006 Author Share Posted February 3, 2006 Yes,This is a registered breeder that told my wife when she purchased the puppy that she had bred out hd and other common problems verbally(at the time i was working away).My wife is telling me as i type this that the breeder was elderley and had bred dogs for many years and my wife assumed that this breeder knew what they where on about. We are more dissapointed with the breeder more than anything because we love this dog so much and was bought purely to be a family pet nothing more. Now we are learning all kinds of things about dog health in a hurry! Also our pup at the moment is not too bad with his walking and only limps when he has run around mad(generally with a visit to see my parents great dane). Can we still let him play ball and stuff around the backyard?.Also as far as swimming and exercise to keep his legs strong i dont think his back legs are weak at the moment plus we live within 5 mins from the ocean and already swims regulary :D Its great to hear so many postive storys with people with dogs that have hd Thank You... I would do alot of research on the net,the best exercise is swimming as its good for muscle whilst still being gentle on the problem area. What you need is the exact problem in writing from your vet so you can research & understand exactly the ins/outs. Pat Smith Posted February 5, 2006 Share Posted February 5, 2006 (edited) Scats, many years ago a friend had her German Shepherd x-rayed for HD as part of the German Shepherd National scheme. The vet said her hips were hopeless and to put her down then and there but seeing as her husband wasn't with her, she was unprepared to do that and brought the bitch and the x-rays home. I took the x-rays to a radiographer to read, a man known in the Shepherd world for his expertise in reading, he said there was nothining wrong with the hips but the x-rays weren't really the best. When they were sent off to be officially read, they came back with the grand total of 9, a near normal. How they score German Shepherds and also other breeds of dogs is on, the lower the score the better, now the maximum score in a dog is 106, 53 either side, so you see, this girl's hips were fine. What I'm saying is, "don't trust your vet, he's not qualified to read the x-rays". I am in full agreement with Miranda Please don't think that I'm questioning the competence of your vet or anything like that, but if he isn't an experienced HD vet ie. does a lot of xrays for scoring purposes, is fully conversant with all the latest treatment options etc. I also stress, that he isn't a radiographer. Incidentally, just looking at the x-rays on this topic, they are not very symmetrical and could never give a good reading, if we sent those in, our readers would send them back advising the vet to re-do them properly, as Miranda writes, "if he isn't an experienced HD vet ie. does a lot of xrays for scoring purposes", then I highly recommend that you take the dog to a vet who is a specialist in this field" Edited February 5, 2006 by Pat Smith Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

malleerr Posted February 6, 2006 Share Posted February 6, 2006 Hi Scat, When you first saw the vet didn't he give you a list of specialist surgeons in the field of HD - maybe if he did you should get one of those to check out the x-rays and make sure they were done in the correct position. When Mallee was first diagonised, one vet did x-rays, then a more senior vet with experience did x-rays in the correct position, and then she was sent on to her spec surgeon who also did x-rays to be absolutely certain. They have to have the legs positioned correctly to get the right angles etc. After the specialist surgeon did the x-rays and confirmed that yes she definately did have HD and she was worse in one leg than the other, he said to us before he would even consider surgery he wanted to know if she actually displayed any clinical signs of HD, as he said HD is not only a radiographical diagonised disease but a clinically diagonised disease also, i.e. some dogs have the worst x-rays ever but do not present any clinical signs and if this was the case with Mallee he would have preferred to leave surgery until she was showing definate signs. scat35 Posted February 7, 2006 Author Share Posted February 7, 2006 Hey malleerr,was only told about 1 specialist so far and on asking me i told them and cant cover that kinda cost right now so as far as getting any further x-rays ect at this stage im currently finacially crippled right now.What id like to do and what i can afford to do are two different things right now unfortunatly but thanks for your advice cause when im more financal i will certainly look further into the x-ray situation... Rusky Posted February 7, 2006 Share Posted February 7, 2006 Hi again Scat the xrays belong to you you paid for them they are yours go and get them then you can take to another vet initially for a second opinion. The other vet may decide that the xrays are not well positioned for reading. Speaking to my friend yesterday she told me that her xrays were always sent over east for reading, that the guy who was noted with the best diagnostic reading skills in WA was now retired and her confidence was not high. You need a radiologist to read the xrays... suggestions anyone as to where scat can send them.? Or take them to another vet as I suggested and ask that they be read by a radiologist. scat35 Posted February 14, 2006 Author Share Posted February 14, 2006 Have gotten pups stitches out yesterday(is finally healing from de-sexing)and spoke to the vet about getting x-rays.Vet said he would photo them and email them to me so will post them soon hopefully. Also need some more advice please,have bought some glucosamine sulphate complex 1000 capsules today to start giving to the dog,the recommened human dosage on the bottle is 2 capsules per day,How many should i give my dog per day.His weight is 35kg and i figure maybe 1 per day? does that sound right?
