Effective Corrections And Control

What are you using for motivation to keep her attention on you instead of the distraction? Is it a powerful enough motivator? Is the distraction level too high when you train?

I can't find any motivator that would over-ride high distractions. Jyra wants the 'real thing' not my impersonations of it. Like Coca cola, Home Brand cola just isn't the real thing.

Equipment wise, if you can't control her on a martingale, and you don't want to use a head collar, I think a check chain is probably your best bet.

The check chain is no more effective than the martingale. At least for Jyra it isn't.

If you are getting some results with the gentle leader, have you thought of using the new blackdog infin8 halter.

Hey there, saw you from a distance at the lure coursing yesterday! This infin8 halter does sound alright. Intrigued.

I don't think you need more equipment, I think you need need to work on your r/ship. If she's totally shutting you out whenever there is something interesting going on then she's not looking to you as leader.

And boy does that dog get excited when there is a sheep or lure nearby! She's not linking the idea of you=satisfaction yet.

I took that on board and required Jyra to drop yesterday before she got to chase the lure. Of course if the lure was already moving, she wouldn't have dropped!

Does anyone have a picture of a GSD or a medium/longish coated dog wearing a prong which they could post, so that I can see what it would look like on Jyra?

Not great shots, but in all of these photo's Bear has he prong on. It is usually pretty hidden by all his hair!

 hi Julie  Yep that was me with the Dali and the Beagle. I had Jake and Murray both in their infin8 halters on Sunday but they were so good I just took them off. I will take a photo of Jake with his on so you can see what it's like. I got them for the really high distraction times and they have worked well so far and I like that it can be used as a general martingale when you don't need the nose peice anymore was only around $30 too so not expensive. Also like that it the pressure is from the back of the next rather than the front of the head

Jyra is gorgeous and can she run  I'm sure you will get there with her. Just takes a while with some hey...

Nickyp, sounds like you have a harder time than me!

Are you going to one of Herding guy's workshops at the end of Jan? If so, which day? I am going on the Saturday. If we are both going on the same day, we must keep our dogs away from each other.

 I've probably made Em sound worse than she is. The problem for me is that her behaviour isn't predictable. She will be fine for ages and then she'll be a complete pain. What drives me nuts is that this is a dog than can heel on and off lead, and do all sorts of things ... when she wants to.

It makes me very wary about things like the herding days because I really don't know if she'll be reasonable or not. She was fine at the last herding day, but every outing is a new adventure.

I'm going to the herding day on the Sunday, so we'll miss you & Jyra. Maybe we can compare nutty dogs another time.
