Pup's mum
Can I ask what for though? Generally Panadol no - asprin yes BUT depending on what you are hoping to achieve asprin may still not be suitable....
haven
That's a question you want to be asking your Vet. You need to find out if it is an appropriate treatment for whatever health issue your dog is suffering and the recommended dose if any at all. Russkie30
a friends dog had a sprain its leg and someone suggested to give her nurofen. I thought i'd just ask if anyone else had used it to help with the pain
Nadia
Human products should not be given unless prescribed by a VET. Was the dog seen by a Vet?
Russkie30
no, but she didn't give it to her in the end because i told her you don't what it could do
t-time
Even an asprin should be under vet advice only!! Don't let your friend take any chances. A dose that is good for a 5kg human is not the right dose for a 5kg dog!!!

Lablover
I agree giving medication to any of our dogs is not ideal. Three of my old dogs were on long term pain relief medication so I had been educated on their use. All the same, if someone was not willing to spend the dollars (which is not the reason of this thread), I would suggest buffered aspirin. I keep an emergency canine medical kit in my vehicle and buffered aspirin is included.
Staffy-Lover
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO nurofen is not even good for humans. My sister is a nurse and says that nurofen can cause all sorts of problems, the least being stomache ulcers. I would be asking my vet about this one

But you said you had some education about the uses of painkillers in dogs The OP or the friend obviously DON'T. Therefore the best advice is for the dog to be taken to a vet BEFORE it gets overdosed with human medication.
brittanygirl
Nurofen is not safe to be given to dogs. My girl Morgan found some Nurofen in my handbag when she was a young puppy. After a quick call to the vets to see if it was dangerous she was rushed to the vets and given some kind of crystals to induce vomiting. She was called the Nurofen puppy at the vets for the next few months.
Gone Grey
Same as everyone else, I would only treat under vet advice. You can easily overdose with panadol, and while it won't kill it can cause liver failure. And I know of several dogs being poisoned by nurofen. Trisven13
Glad to see you've been careful as Panadol and similar drugs will kill people so I hate to think what they would do to dogs. I know this very very well as my 13 year old daughter recently overdosed on Panadol and the emergency department told me that it is the second most dangerous drug to overdose on and SHOULD NOT be available in supermarkets for anyone to purchase. I have also seen on the animal shows on Animal Planet that a dog nearly died from chewing on human tylenol which is the same as panadol. Staffy-Lover
i am sorry to hear that Trisven i hope your daughter is better now. And i agree that panadol, nurofen etc should not be available except through a chemist.
Tahna
Panadol will kill a dog, as said before the liver does not react the same way as humans do and a dog who is given panadol could suffer fatal liver failure. I believe it's the paracetamol in the product therefore I suggest that nurofen is not given either! Talk to your vet if your dog requires medication for pain. Hope everything is ok
