My yard has heap of fleas, is the rain bringing them in? what can I use to kill them all? Someone told me LIME!

I am having trouble breaking the cycle, everytime I think I am on top of the problem they are crawling on my dogs again!

Firstly have you managed to get on top of your flea problem?

Secondly what and how much are you feeding Maggie and are your dogs fed separtely to each other?

Thirdly Maggie doesn't look very happy in any of the photo's have you considered taking her to get a vet for a checkup she may not be feeling very well. Maybe a Thyroid check?

No amount of product will help if you don't have a healthy dog to start with.

Please don't take my questions the wrong way but Maggie seems to have dropped far too much coat after her litter.

Laura, I posted a question last year that may have some tips for getting a post-whelp coat back in shape - here.

Maggie's coat is looking quite unhealthy overall though (lack of gloss, seems patchy rather than overall hair loss etc), so it might be time to look at her diet to see what's lacking (most likely proteins and oils). If you're not feeding BARF then I suggest you try it, does wonders for the dogs and it's cheaper than commercial too.

I'm not sure if you were stacking the dogs for the photos or just free-standing them, but they are a-framing quite a lot. You need to work on their stance at the front (encourage them to lean forward not backward) and in most of the photos (which is why I wasn't sure if you were meaning to stack them or not) you have the hocks in the wrong place too (both tucked in and stretched out too far).

Good luck for your plans in 2006

Hope you guys don't mind me posting your quotes here....

I have borrowed heaps of books from the local library as I think I need to learn MORE Doggie stuff...

The complete idiot's guide to Positive Dog Training

(I need this to train myself!!! :happydance: )

The complete guide to caring for your dog (care, nutrition, health and first aid etc)

Keep your dog healthy the natural way

who's the boss?

The bark busters guide to dog behavior and training

The veterinarians guide to your dogs symptoms

book of the bitch (although I have several breeding books here already!)

natural pet cures

the good food cookbook for dogs (looked good, might eat some myself!)

The dog owners problem solver

and

the everything dog health book

I also found this website very informative

Canine Hypothyroidism

Canine thyroid disease

Has anyone read any of these books?

And are there any other REALLY good books?

I am also starting my girls on BARF!!! Thanks ML.

This is just my opinion..but I wouldn't bother with the Bark Busters one.

I would go for something like 'The Power of Positive training' by Pat Miller; 'Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor; 'The Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson or 'How Dogs Learn by Burch and Bailey. A really nice novel type book is 'Bones Would Rain From The Sky' by Suzanne Clothier- it's one of my favourites.

Also 'Give your dog a bone' by Ian Billinghurst is a good BARF one, he also has 'The BARF diet' (a small book) and 'Grow Your Pups With Bones' (for puppies).

As for the hypothyroidism- make an appointment to chat to your Vet about it and they can take some blood for the T4 test while you're there- that way you'll get the answer rather than stressing about it- and you really want to know that she's within range if you're going to breed from her again.

Cheers,

Mel.

I have heard (from here) not many people would recommend bark busters, but I thought I would grab it anyway and have a read of it. (at least I can take it back when I finish reading it!!! )

Can I order these online? and where from?

I borrowed 'give your dog a bone' from another breeder, but didnt get to read it all. I can buy the book from Ian?

Can my local vet do the T4 test or do I have to go to a 'specialist'?

Thanks, Laura.

Your local vet should be able to order a T4 panel for you. They will probably need to take a blood sample and send it out for testing.

Good for you for starting a BARF/raw diet. I have had great results with this diet in terms of health and coat quality etc. Supplement-wise I recommend putting your dogs on a fish oil supplement.

I agree with SR's recommendations when it comes to books.

Some very good choices there. I too would not bother too much with the Bark Busters one.

re the thyroid, it is worthwhile getting not only T4 but T4 antibody tested as well.

Books: I recommed

The Other End of The Leash Patricia B. McConnell

Healthy Dogs A Handbook of natural Therapies Dr Barbara Fougere

How To Speak Dog - mastering the art of Dog-Human communication Stanley Coren

Cheers

Yep I would say that is a good price for the T4.

BARF books and video's you can buy from *Here*

I buy alot of my training books from Amazon.com as they seem to be cheaper than here with our book tax and GST, also they quite often have sales on those books and the last batch I bought I basically got for half price.

If you want an Australian site then Natures Creatures should have everything there- if you can't find something on the site an email or call to Perla will fix you up.

Cheers,

Mel.

Forgot to mention flea control:

Cotex Hydrokill Flea and Tick Rinse Concentrate www.petshampoos.com.au

Had a client whose dog I bathed a month ago, riddled with fleas, has an environment problem in the grounds of the house.

I left some Cotex with the owner to treat by spraying every three days.

Yesterday bathed the dog again and only two fleas sighted.

Thanks Mel for those links.

I have seen this website too. BARF

Thanks Hesapandabear for the list of good books, we are now ontop of the flea problem and we have none now, it took a while to get rid of them cos the rain and I had to treat the yard almost everyday!!!

But thanks for the link, will try them next time!

Laura, sometimes it's just trial and error.

We all start out novices and just learn to overcome each hurdle as it presents itself.

Diet, grooming and handling all become easier to manage with experience. I wouldn't get too worried, just do the best you can and seek advice as problems arise, before long you will have answers for others and be able to deal with situations in your kennel with ease

Edit : as i can't spell today

Hi

Thank you Warley.

I found out how to Groom Maggie the other day and she looked really nice, Oh I would kill for more coat right now!!!!

I have only just realise what I am doing wrong in regards to 'handling' (If you can call it that! :D )

I am unsure if Maggie has a thyriod problem but I will get her checked out anyway, just to be safe not sorry.

Things start looking up for one of my girls only for me to find something is wrong with the other girl!!! :( but we are getting there, Kyrah and Maggie are both learning how to stack better, I am learning to groom them and present them better and also learning what diet works best for them.

I am not blaming anyone here but I think it may have been a ingredient change to one of the products I have been feeding either that or could be someone throwing food over the fence, as my 'over-the-road' neighbour asked my partner if she could give a meaty bone to my dogs and he said yes, I got home and freaked out, here is Maggie chewing on a COOKED bone it had been in their frigde since christmas day!!!! :(:)

I told my partner if any one offers to give my dogs any food say NO!!!!
