Vale Duffa.

This girl was the loveliest dog of all time. Always with me when I wasn't at work, could alway be found with her head resting on my foot. She LIVED and BREATHED me...and I lived and breathed her. There IS no loyalty like the loyalty of a dog.

I remember taking her swimming for the first time. PLOP....I threw her in the little pond. GURGLE....and under she went. I had NO idea that BUllies could have trouble in the swimming stakes. Bugger me dead if I didnt have to jump in fully clothed and all to save her. She was paddling away....arse deep in the water...NO bloody hope of saving herself.

I remember the next time. A big day out at the beach planned. She had the pink zinc cream on her nose....sunglasses...and OFF we went. I had her on her lead..we parked and walked the 3 kilometers into this secluded beach for a nice little swim and drinks session. She looked at all of the water with a bit of trepidation....but seemed okay. I tapped a stake into the sand....umbrella....attached her lead to the stake and turned my back on her. BUGGER me dead again...OFF she was running. Straight back in the direction we walked in from. I RAN...and RAN...lost sight of her...was panicking. Was SURE I lost her. 5 or 10 exhausted minutes later I get to my car. The little bitch was sitting there by my door wagging her tail. She just WASNT a water baby was my little girl.

Tons of my mates have very fond memories of her too...shes well remembered. Ive got the little girl tattooed onto my foot actually.

Now...the sad part.

I was back at school studying full time in 97. Duffa (a brindle standard Bull Terrier) was at home - locked securely away (or so I thought). I lived on a very busy road back then.

I got a call half way through the day from my sister who lived around the corner...told me Duffa had been hit on the road and to get home in a hurry. You know that feeling when your WHOLE stomach drops? That was me. My stomach...gone.

I arrived home and she was lying in my driveway...on a shaded piece of grass where my sister carried her to. She didnt survive the hit (by a bus actually). There wasnt a mark on her though. To this day I dont know how she got out.

I dont shed too many tears....not many have ever seen that part of me...but I shed one or two that day. I carried her into my backyard...found a shaded place - buried her deep and have remembered her nearly every day since.

My girl. My Duffa.
