Cheyenne_Fury Posted December 28, 2005 Share Posted December 28, 2005 Hi guys, I am really interested in applying to do the Dog trainer accreditation though NDTF and was wondering if anyone had done this course and if they could pass on any information and advise. I have had a keen interest in dogs all my life and love to be around them and work with them. I currently have two dogs of my own, a beagle cross and a dalmatian. I currently attend ADT Berwick with Murray (Beagle cross) and am doing the Sout Eastern training school sessions with Jake (Dalmatian) and would love to learn more about training and also eventually look at a career change if i was good enough I have sent an enquiry to NDTF but would love to hear people's thoughts on the course and any advise they could give me. haven Posted December 28, 2005 Share Posted December 28, 2005 There are a few people here who have done the course that I am aware of, or you can talk to any instructor at ADT, as the certificate III in dog training and behaviour is a requirement to be employed by ADT. Having done it myself, I highly recommend it to ANYONE even if you have no wish to make dog training your profession. I had worked with animals before and had the basic concepts of psychology from school, but the amount I learned was phenomenal and has been invaluable in enabling me to help my own dog Loki with his issues. Definately essential information to anyone who has a dog! I won't kid you it can be a lot of work. You get out what you put in and if you are anything like me it will pretty much take up your whole life outside of normal working hours for the seven months of the course But trust me when I say you will never be sorry you did it and you will never look back. You will leave with a whole new perspective and much of it is applicable in everyday life, to other animals and humans too, not just dogs. I describe it to potential students as being in a foregin country. You can take a book and try to muddle through everyday life by flicking through and attempting poor translations to communicate what you want and to understand what others say, or you can become fluent in that language and throw away the book. Completing the course and since then the Canine behaviour specialist certificate, are two things in my life of which I am the most proud. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Do you have to complete the Cert 3 with ADT first, or will they recognise other certificates, such as the Delta Certificate? How long does the Canine Behaviour course last? haven Posted December 28, 2005 Share Posted December 28, 2005 The Cert III or relevant experience is a requirement for the Canine behaviour specialist course. I expect that the Delta certificate would be acceptable, but best to check with Julija or Catherine at the NDTF on 1300 664 466. You would also need to check when the next course commences, as I know they are extremely busy at the moment with the Cert III, as they are now also running it for international students and by correspondance. Akitagal Posted January 1, 2006 Share Posted January 1, 2006 Hey ya. Im currently doing the ndtf course and am about half way through. I am absolutly loving it. Haven is right in saying that it is alot of work and time consuming but saying that i think it is so worth it for what you learn. I choose to put in more time as i want to learn as much possible whilst the rescources are available. What i like about the course is not only do you get the therory of it all( and the therory is great in that it is indepth), but you get the hands on experience as well. It covers all methods of training and because there are many lecturures and instructors you can get many different angles on things.I also like that lecturers strive to stay updated and current on methods and infomation. I am impressed with this course and am looking forward to continueing to immerse myself in the infomation and learning it presents. Sorry for dodgy spelling!!! szafir Posted January 2, 2006 Share Posted January 2, 2006 Hi all, I have recently completed the Cert III and i cant praise the course enough - the lecturers were fantastic, very knowledgeable and passionate about their line of work. What really impressed me is how the course kept an open yet thorough approach, all methods of training and a wide variety of training tools were neutrally discussed informing us all of their use and associated pros & cons. We learned theory and then had the opportunity to put it into practice by working with a whole different bunch of kennel dogs. I found this highly beneficial since i was mainly familiar with working with large breeds. If anyone is considering doing this course, by all means take the plunge and go for it! You will not be disappointed, and the knowledge you gain will stay with you for life. It will change the way you view dog training and dog behaviour in general... The NDTF course will be the best thing that you have ever done in relation to learning to become a professional trainer. If you get half way through the course and aren't overwhelmed by how much involment there really is in dog training I will eat my hat. Trust me, you'l have a ball. chilli Posted January 4, 2006 Share Posted January 4, 2006 Hi, I started a similar thread in general discussion (i think), as I too am interested in enrolling in this course, or something similar. I sent emails to both NDTF and to Delta about the trainer courses they have, although I am not holding my breath, as both courses look like they only run in Vic, and as I am in Brisvegas, this is'nt suitable. Does anyone happen to know if there are equivalent courses here in Brisbane/Queensland or if they can be done by correspondance (although I am not sure how this would work.) I have recently started my own petsitting business and have completed the TAFE college Cert III in Kennel & Cattery Practices in 1999 and also am studying part time through the same tafe the Cert. in Companion Animal Sciences, and believe that the trainer courses that either NDTF or Delta do would provide me with invaluable skills and knowledge to assist both myself in my business and my clients and their pets as well. If anyone can give me any info on QLD based courses or correspondance options in my wait to hear back from the relevant establishments I would be really grateful. It been a big learning curve for me i am confident with the dogs its being able to pass the information n to the handler so they can then pass it on to te dog thats the hardest bit lol especially when everyone is an individual. the more we have ben working together the more i want to ge started on my course so i can pick the brains of all these people in the know yb Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Finishing touches being put on the material required for this course. I'm informed that it's expected this will be finalised in the next week or two. Any who have already enquired and left their details are still on the "list" and the info pack will be sent out then. As I understand it, the time frame for the distance course is 8 or 9 months (approx) and apart from the theory component & practical hours, comprises of two blocks of hands-on training down here in Melbourne. The first block is about 3 months into the course, the second block is towards the end. At successful completion of the course, you receive Cert III accreditation. That's all I know, so far. I think the course is going to be very popular, so I'd be recommending those interested get in contact with NDTF 03 9761 0406 or 1300 66 44 66 or email [email protected] and put your names down on the "list" early.
