Act/q'byn Dolers

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, DH and I (plus the three furkids) have just arrived in the ACT. We move into our house on Thursday!

I feed using the BARF philosophy and am seeking suggestions/advice as to where to buy RMBs for the dogs. We'll be living at Harman, just over the border from Q'byn, and Fyshwick or Q'byn are the closest shopping areas to home. I would like to source as wide a variety of bones as possible, plus some muscle meat and organs (heart and liver are the favourites, but will try other organs if they're available). I'd also like to buy rabbit if possible.

Where do you shop for your RMBs? All suggestions gratefully accepted!

TIA.

BTW - chicken, lamb, beef, rabbit, roo are all OK. Pork isn't.

Hi Lillysmum,

And welcome  Hope the move went well!

We get Jack's recreational bones from our local butcher, Dumbrell's, on Donald Rd. They also have offal and rabbit, I think, but I've never bought it.

The chicken shop at the Fyshwick Markets has carcasses, chicken necks, duck wings, turkey wings etc ... as well as rabbit and a heap of other stuff ... chicken livers, hearts and so on. Everything poultry, really, plus a few extras! Barry Hawke's butcher at Fyshwick Markets also has marrowbones (which are usually gone by midday on Saturday) and fairly fatty lamb offcuts as well as lamb necks and shanks.

We scour the fridges at Qbn Coles and usually get cheap human-grade meat that way ... Jack occasionally feasts on raw lamb cutlets, t-bone steak and the like. They also sell offal but, again, I haven't tried it. The one time we gave Jack liver, he rolled in it repeatedly ... and he wouldn't touch the kidney or ox heart we tried him on.

Cardawan's Pet Supply, suggested by petmezz, is on Uriarra Rd. I think you can also get raw meats from Petbarn at Fyshwick in their "pet deli" section.

But some others will probably pop in here with alternative sources for bulk purchases ... might just have to wait until they get to their work computers on Monday.

Greenbank Chicken on Bayldon Road is a wholesale chicken store.

Carcasses for $0.60/kg or $6 for a box of carcasses (approx 10kg).

Pet mince (minced leg bones - nothing else) for $1.20/kg

Necks for $1.80/kg.

They sell chicken of course but I know they also sell beef, pork, frozen seafood etc.

Cardowans in Qbyn has already been mentioned

Chicken from the chicken shop at Fyshwick markets is probably closest for you or Greenbank is meant to be pretty good.

Petbarn in Fyshwick has rabbit among other things. The freezers are down the back.

High Country Meats is usually pretty good if you call and put in an order to make sure they have it there for you (lamb flaps etc)

I shop at Belconnen Markets, but that may be a bit too far for you on a regular basis.

Organ meats on markdown at Woolies :cheer:

Here are the details for Greenbank Chicken

Address: 39 Bayldon Road QBN

Ph: 6232 9866

Opening Hours: Mon - Fri 7am - 2pm

Sat 7 - 12pm

They're currently selling frozen turkeys, turkey breast rolls (with stuffing), hams etc for Christmas. I saw the ad in the newspaper a little while back.

I haven't called as yet to find out their pricing but a friend told me they ordered a turkey roll last year and it was very yummy  I'm going to call and ask for the flavours. Will post it when I find out.

I went back to Petbarn today! :)

The dogs will be happy...they have some lamb brisket and some roo...they were out of white rabbit though. :mad

Anyway, with us moving in on Thursday, I reckon I'll spend at least some of Friday going between PB, Greenbank, Woolies at Jerra, the two butchers, AND the Fyshwick markets... :mad

After all, I have a chest freezer to fill. :mad

And I can't believe how CHEAP it all seems to be!

:mad maybe call to check on the necks before you go, I bought 3 boxes (48kgs), not sure how many were left! also a good idea to check if you go there for carcasses, as they get them in a few times a week and aren't always in stock (they'll hold some for you if they know you're coming).
