malleerr
Hi Guys Just wanted to share some news with you all that makes as very happy!! I have just received an email from our original Surgeon (Sam - aka our hero) who did all the ops on Mallee saying: "Saw Mallee's last xrays and i couldn't be happier with them. Slow return to exercise from now on - the surgery sites are almost completely healed and therefore the main trick now is just to improve her strenght and mobility" YAYY so i emailed him back thanking him soo much for all his help and support over the last 4mths and that we could not of gotten through it all without his support, patience and help, as he has been there for us whenever we needed him, questions etc, he would often sends me emails asking how she is going etc etc, and he replied with: "That is my pleasure - and likewise you and Brock have been the best clients i have ever had! - understanding and commited to your lovely dog - you deserve her to do really well and never have another sick day in her life." It makes me soo happy to hear from Sam that he is happy with her progress to date as we have not been able to see him since the last op as he no longer works at Werribee Uni Vets!! So onwards and upwards for Mallee :D Hope everyone else pooches are going as well as Mallee....!!!.... Erny - i have been reading your other thread regarding Kal and note that we actually saw you several times last Thursday at the vets lazing under the tree, and in the waiting room. So if you happened to see another little ridgeback being walked across the grass in a sling that was us and Mallee - i hope Kal is going well she is a beautiful girl!!! Erny
Hmmmmm... that's really interesting...Thanks Erny! Very little info on the ruptures/thyroiditis correlation, unfortunately. When I find the other links (that really didn't say much more other they have noticed the correlation) I'll post them. I guess it suggests, though, that if you have a dog with these physical problems, it may well be worth having (thorough) bloods done to establish/rule out thyroiditis, even in the absence of thyroiditis symptoms. As I understand it, the problem is that if thyroiditis is in the early stages, a standard THS test is often insufficient/unreliable, and that all 6 analytes (vet "speak" ) need to be checked for. Anyway - don't wish to take this topic off tangent (ie from ligament rupture to thyroiditis) but yes, I agree the correlation is interesting, Kelly. Oh hey! Yes! I do recall seeing you guys! Glad the news looks like being on the up and up for Mallee and trusting that you will enjoy years and years of healthy, happy interaction and fun. And yep - that was me on the lawns - looking like we were having the preverbial picnic! We were very lucky with the nice weather. Sorry the "connection" wasn't earlier so we could have said "hi". :D Edited March 17, 2006 by Erny

Kelly_Louise
What absolutely fantastic news Antoinette!! I can certainly see why you guys are so excited!! The worst is finally over, and now only good things to look forward to!!! Chloe is doing well. Her surgeon is back later this week so I will speak to him about Chloe's progress and her other leg. But this morning I let her out for a toilet break and the birds were dive bombing her (poor thing can't even pee in peace) and after she had finished her business she bounded after them and such a joyous way... she was kicking her legs up and dancing around all on her own. It was such a great sight. Anyways, better go and do some work. Glad to hear that all is well!! Take care and hugz to all!!!
fido666
Hi all, Duncan gave me a heart attack again yesterday . He tried to rush past me and slipped on the polished floors. All his legs went out from under him and he started to panic. When he got up he was holding the surgery leg up in the air. He put weight on it again fairly quickly and seems fine on it now. It does seem a bit hot around the joint, I hope he hasn't snapped a pin or done further injury. I'm hoping he has only strained a muscle or something but will keep a careful watch on him for a few days. He was tearing around like a loon again today and does not seem troubled, I'm probably just stressing for nothing . Hope Mallee, Chloe, and Koza are all doing OK . Cheers, Corine
Kelly_Louise
Oh wow what a shock for you Corine? But I'm sure his leg being fully healed will be able to withstand that. A surgeon (not my surgeon) told me that it's fine for the screws and plate to back out once the bone is healed as it no longer serves a purpose cause the bone is stable. Not sure if this is true or not though... although I'm sure a loose screw and plate would be fairly uncomfortable rattling around in one's leg!!! Hopefully Duncan just momentarily jarred it and he's on the mend now. Good to hear he's tearing around again anyway!!! Chloe did that 10 days after her operation at the surgery. When we took her back to get her stitches out she panicked and tried to scrabble away and her back legs totally split and either side of her in the most awkward position and she landed flat on her belly. But she pulled up fine once we got her up and the surgeon didn't even bat an eyelid. How is his weight management going? Is he still losing weight? Hugs to all!!! malleerr
Oh Corine, your heart must have stopped for a few moments...you poor thing..... I do hope poor little Dunc is feeling alot better now. Maybe he just strechted his leg to far, i am really hoping that is all it is. Give him a cuddle from me. As to what Kel said about the screws/plates backing out a bit, Mallee's surgeon said to us if Mallee's backed out anymore or even completed backed out he would only open her up to remove them if they were causing her pain, which he did not think would happen as they don't have sharp edges. But i don't think Duncan would have done that. Mallee is still coming along in leaps and bounds. Its really starting to get exciting, as she is coming along so well. We had another email from one of her sugeons Guy who said that he expects that she can come out of the cage in 1-2 months unsupervised so that will be fantastic!! Hugs to you all and your pooches - i hope all is well with everyone. Oh BTW Corine did you get Duncans bowel problem sorted out??
fido666
Hi Kelly Louise and Malleerr, Thanks for the well wishes for my accident prone boy . He seems fine this morning, had another run in the park with my 6 mo pup. His bowel problem has been diagnosed as Inflammatory Bowel Disease as was expected. Tummy wise he seems fine since we have stopped feeding him boiled chicken (skinless), we think it the protein in this which sets him off. The problem was that he got the runs, we were told to feed him bland food, chicken was the food of choice with some rice. The very thing we were feeding to settle his tummy was causing the problem it seems . Since switching to beef and Hills z/d dry he's been fine. The z/d does have chicken in it but the protein is hydrolised in such a way that no antibodies can attach to it (so the Vet tells me anyway). As for his weight, I don't know as I haven't weighed him since the last vet visit, will have to do that. He still seems so awfully thin though . Cheers, Corine
Kelly_Louise
Well as long as you know the problem and the best way to treat and feed him, then he's back on track and I'm sure will put weight on again soon. He certainly doesn't seem to let it slow him down!!! What a tough boy Duncan is!!! Would love to see some pics of beautiful Duncan, Corine!!! And also some shots of little Mallee in action would be wonderful... we have to see the results of all your hard work Antoinette!!!

Kelly_Louise
Well it's a sad day indeed for me today... Chloe is fine, however my oldest fur friend (Danny the pony) was put to sleep yesterday. He has been with me my entire life, and was very old with a bad heart. However he was well into his mid 30's and I have so many happy memories with him. Oh the stories I can tell of the things we got up to!!! It's the first day in all of my 28 years though that he hasn't been with us, so it feels very strange and I miss him. RIP - Dan the man. You were a sh!thead sometimes, but I saw past that... and you were my beautiful, beautiful boy. I will miss you very much.
malleerr
I am so sorry to hear about old Danny Kelly_Louise. My thoughts are with you! I know what it is like to loose your horse - i lost mine around 10 years ago and still think of him often.. You develop such a strong emotional bond with them hey!! Chin up, think of all the good times that you had with Danny from childhood to now and no how much of a wonderful life he had with you, he did well to get to 30!!! Good times are a coming Kel they are just around the corner. Yell out if you need a chat. Antoinette xo P.S. sending lots and lots of :D :p your way
Kelly_Louise
Thanks Antoinette. You are right, my boys were my first real loves. I adore them. It's hard to imagine him not being there anymore. He was such a tough old bugger that I really did believe he would never go, and that he'd certainly outlive me!!! But I think of him at the bridge and laugh... he'd love to gorge himself on all the luscious grass there!!! Just to make us laugh, here are some pics of us together when I was a little girl... Please don't laugh AT ME, my mum used to dress me!!! Edited April 9, 2006 by Kelly_Louise
malleerr
TOO CUTE!!!! You look gorgeous - the funny thing about those photos is the second one, i have a photo of me standing with me old appolouse (-spl- i have never been able to spell that one) horse wearing just about the same clothes in the same stance and everything......spooky......Danny looks alot like my second horse only smaller - i love the chestnuts!!! I can imagine him up there now at the Bridge munching out on all the lush clover and grass having a belly ache.......lol........ Thanks for the pics they were great to see, and finally i have some sort of idea on what you may look like......... Hang in there, special hugs to you and to Chloe - Mallee sends you a lick on the cheek!! Antoinette xoxo
fido666
Hi KL, Sorry to hear of your loss of old Danny boy. I've never had a horse or pony and can't imagine having a pet so long, it was bad enough when my 14.5 yo Collie passed away . Thanks for sharing the pics, he looks a lovely pony . Regards, Corine
Kelly_Louise
Thanks guys... I decided yesterday that I can't be sad. He was my friend for a very long time, which is lucky for me. And you know, every time I think of him I end up laughing. He was such a funny horse, and there are sooooo many memories, that I can't help but smile. Luckily Antoinette I have much better dress sense now, and I don't look like a boy anymore!!!! Thank goodness horses know nothing about dress sense. I have pics of the other boy (Storm Boy - another eye catching chestnut) in things that I've dressed him up in... poor bugger!!! Anyhow, back to topic. Chloe has been going for her first walks over the park and loving it. She has been soooo good. We walk about 500m over to the park benches, sit and watch all the goings on in the park for a while, and then wander home. It's been great. Even though she is eager after so long, she is patient at the crossing of the road and listens to everything i say. Every now and then she looks up at me with a great big smile for me to tell her how proud I am and what a good girl she is!!! She is not pulling up lame from the other leg either, which is good. I will give the surgeon a call next week to see what are the plans for her other leg. Well guys hope all are well and on the way to recovery, keep updating!!! Take care!!! malleerr
HI ALL, Just checking in to see how everyone is going. All must be OK as it has been awhile since anyone has posted. Koza - hows Stella going? Kelly how are things with you hope Chloe is marching along well - have you had the family wedding yet??? God i hope i have remembered right, but i am sure you mentioned you were going to be a bridesmaid???? Mallee is gunning along, going really well. Has not been back swimming as Brock has been working heaps and heaps of overtime lately which is good in the money scheme of things but not so good with trying to get Mallee back into swimming. She is going for lots of walkies though and loving it. She is out of the cage now when we are at home, and not too busy - she has had the occassional zommie when we have not been able to grap hold of her straight away. You have to watch her eyes all the time as she get this look about her right before she does it and its always usually just before she want to go to sleep. Its almost like she throws these little tantrams about being tired and then woosh she is off like a bullet! I am soo pleased with her progress over the last few weeks - its just excellent!!! YIPEE FINALLY!!!! Still taking things slowly as i am sure she is probably ready for more and wanting more - but we have both discussed the situation and would rather be safe with her then sorry. She is almost back to looking the way she did before all the ops and her hair is almost grown back. Her walking is really good, she has a slight limp in the right leg and swings it around, and it gets more pronounced the longer she walks, so i would say that is when she is getting tired. Mallee celebrates her first birthday tomorrow WOW we have finally got there - 4 mths ago i was questioning whether she would ever get there!! Hope all is well with everyone Love to you all and hugs to the pups Antoinette xo
