Cruciate Ligament Ruptures

Hi guys... feeling really nervous about tomorrow. I will be devastated if the news is not so good, but I'm trying to stay positive.

Please send my little girl all your best healing thoughts to get her through her xrays with flying colours tomorrow!!! Poor little baby I feel so worried for her.

Will let you know as soon as I know anything although it may not be until a bit later in the afternoon...

Hopefully it will be with good news!!!

Antoinette is Mallee having xrays also this week? If so, what day? And Corine, how is poor baby Duncan doing? Any firm diagnosis yet for his weight loss? And Koza how is Stella doing? Is she improving satisfactorily?

Take care all!

Hey Kelly!

Sending you and Chloe lots of wishes of good luck and lots of :D ;) ;) :D

I know too well how you are feeling but we both have to stay positive!!! IT WILL BE GOOD NEWS.... i have everything crossed for you and so does Mallee.

Mallee goes in on Thursday for her x-rays, so you must also cross your fingers for her!!!!

I will be online tomorrow so will keep checking to see how you go, but will be off-line Thursday - damm- but hopefully will know by tomorrow afternoon how Chloe went otherwise i will be worring about you guys till Friday!!.....lol.....i am hopeless!! Will also update you with Mallee's result then if not Thursday night.

Well - i jinxed Mallee yest after saying she has been going so well - we (Brock and I) came home from work for lunch yest, as we come home everyday so we can take her to the toliet etc, and found poor Mallee cowering in the corner of her cage, at first did not know what was wrong with her until we walked right into the lounge room........i have never seen a mess like it before.......excuse the language but there was shit everywhere....poor girl had had diahorrea really bad - she must have hung on for us long as she could but to no avail as it was not only all through her cage, but all over the carpet up the curtains all over her blankets all over the side of the cage..........:o:rofl: Poor little girl thought she was in so much trouble, i felt so bad for her that we had not been home to help her but we cannot be home all the time - so the lunch break was spent comforting Mallee, well Brock was, and i had the lovely task of cleaning up the lounge room. Since the op Mallee seems to have a very sensitive tummy and we had given her a denture bone treat that morning - one with beef flavour in the middle - it must not have agreed with her at all.

Anyway enough of that - i will be thinking of you tomorrow Kelly - good luck with it - try not to worry too much think good things - as they say all good things come to those who wait - and we know that we have been waiting a long long time so it has to happen soon.

Take care and i will check on you tomorrow. Give Chloe a big big hug for me.!!.

Antoinette ;) :)

Hi Antoinette,

I can fully symapthise with you, Duncan has had a poo fest a couple of times this week. We are starting to suspect the so called bland food we have been giving him (boiled chicken) is the very thing which sets him off. He seems fine on the Hills I/D and was even OK on some beef but as soon as we fed him the fresh chicken again WHAMMO! We are still waiting for biopsy results, will know more then I hope :) .

Cheers,

Corine

Thanks for the well wishes!!

Oh poor Mallee... I can imagine she must have felt so bad. Chloe is the same if she can't hold on, which is why we expanded her pen in the first place. Poor girl though, I hope she is feeling a bit better now. Nice lunch break though for you and Brock (NOT!!!). I truly also hope all goes well with her xrays, although I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised. She is going so well lately that I'm sure it will be fine. Still, don't get hopes up and if she is still not 100% don't be upset, she will get there, it will just take a bit longer. And of course, I will be thinking of you all and sending Mallee all the best wishes that this will be "the" one... the one we've all been waiting for!!!

I am fully expecting not the best news with Chloe. She has been really naughty lately and keeping her down is getting harder and harder. When she knew she was going in the car this morning she bounced around like a jumping bean and zoomed like a maniac. It was a different story once we got to the vets though, and the poor girl jammed herself behind the benches and refused to come out!!!

I will be seeing one of the specialists at 2pm today to see the xrays (I insisted this time) so I will update you as soon as I get back. I'm nervous, but I keep reminding myself that I see the great results everyday at home and in her happy smile again, so it can't be all bad. I just hate her being away, and worry the whole time. Would you believe that I cry just to leave her to have xrays? I am so hopeless.

Well better go and do some work so that I can leave early. Will let you know asap. I hope Mallee and Duncan are feeling a bit better now. Corine have you had a verdict on Duncan's weight loss concerns? I hope he is doing a bit better.

Thanks for the support guys and letting me get the stress off my chest. Talk to you soon hopefully with some good news and until then take care!

Well guys, not as I'd hoped. Her leg has still not healed 100% yet. There has been a huge difference between this current xray and the one she had 5 weeks ago, but there is still a small crack in the bone that has not healed over yet. The back of the bone looks really good, but in the front there is still that damn crack. *sigh*

Poor bugger has runny poos now as well, but she is very tired now so sleeping away. I'm really disappointed, but the vet said he would have liked to see it 100% healed by now... but as long as she continues to be careful and no strenuous activity it should continue to heal up nicely. He said that it's nothing bad, and the activity she is doing seems to be fine. So the verdict on her other leg is out until her surgeon comes back in. He said nothing bad should come of it if it continues to keep healing.

So that's my news. Hopefully yours will be much better tomorrow Antoinette. Everything is crossed for you and little Mallee. If I can't have the great news I sure hope you can!

Well better check on my girl... look forward to hearing from you Antoinette.

Bugger Kelly  :D I was really hoping that it would have fully healed for poor little Chloe - as i am sure you were too!!!!! It must be that she is an older dog  did the vet give any reason as to why it may be taking a little longer than usual??? Poor old Chloe - hopefully the wait will not be too much longer. At least there is a difference between the two x-rays so something is going on down there! That walk in the park will have to wait a little longer.....poor you and poor Chloe she must be hanging out to get to the park!! Fingers still crossed for you guys that it wont be too long, hang in there Kelly i know you must be devestated, but it can't be long now, and it was only 5 weeks since the last lot of x-rays, so maybe in another 3 weeks it will be fully healed.

I am worried now that Mallee wont have healed either, i so hope that she has!!! Last night when she was lying down i had my hand on her rump and i could feel something moving in there - i told Brock and he told me to stop being so fussy over her, and reckons that i check her out too much, just let her go, but its really hard not to look for things when its been such a long time of things just going wrong.

Well i must love and leave you. Chin up Kel i am sure she will be OK give her a big pat and hug from me and Mallee and have one for yourself also.

I will try and post how Mallee goes tommorow night if not Friday till then take care.:confused::cry: :D

Thanks so much Antoinette, I really appreciate your thoughts. He didn't say what could be causing her to heal slowly. He mentioned it could be a number of things from taking on too much of her weight too soon (from her other bad leg) or even that the plate they inserted may not be big enough to be handling her weight as well (apparently there are all different sizes). So I don't feel too bad, he said as long as she continues doing how she is it should be good soon.... just no launching off of it too much and of course the running and jumping. I guess I feel a bit better cause I can see her improvement, so I know that it is getting better. Slowly but surely. I'm so glad I saw the xrays and had them explained to me. And it all made much more sense to me and I got to ask so many helpful questions. It was such a comfort to actually see the healing that has been done. He also mentioned that she could go for a short walk (but walking only of course) as it seems to be stable enough. I don't think we will though as she walks enough as we have a huge block of land. And there was some good news that she has lost even more weight! Which is really great. It's only half a kilo, but better than nothing or putting it on. It's hard to keep her weight in check with so much inactivity.

Well we will just have to wait with bated (and puppy) breath to hear how Mallee goes. I so hope your news is better. But like me, don't be too disheartened as you know in yourself that you can see Mallee getting better. Whether it's more of a wait or (hopefully) NOT, she has come very far and it's showing. But we are sending all the very best wishes that we can celebrate that one patient is off the invalid list!!!! Won't that be great!!!

Best of luck and we all have everything crossed for a positive result for you, Brock and little Mallee.

Lotsa love to you all,

Kel

Hi Kelly Louise,

Sorry to hear your news was not quite what you had hoped for. It's not fair is it, all that waiting. Duncan's leg healed relatively quickly, I think mainly because he was young and his bones were in their natural growth stage anyway. Try and stay positive, at least you could see some improvement this time.

I haven't got the results back on Duncan yet, in the meantime he is handling the Hills i/d canned food OK, nice formed stools YAY! I'll let you all know once I know more myself.

Cheers,

Corine

Thank you to you too Corine, you've also been a wealth of support to us. I'm really glad to hear that Duncan appears to be doing a bit better. Hopefully it will stay that way, but I do hope you get some more info on what's happening to him soon. At least that way you will know how best to help him. Poor little boy.

Well I'm anxiously waiting to hear from Antoinette. Oh I'm hoping it's good news!! Come on Mallee!!!

Ohhhhhh nervous... chewing nails... hanging in suspense...

Well Hi Guys,

We have unfortunately had much of the same news as Chloe and Kelly. Mallee's left side has healed perfectly, but the right side still has a little more healing to do. The bone has bridged right across on the right side except for a little gap in the middle, and just need become more dense. So she is still in the cage while we are not home, but can start more exercise and more swimming. We have been so used to going by timelines, and all he has said this time was he does not need to see us again, no more xrays, and just take things slowly and as they come, and of course get in contact with him if we need to. Not quite what we wanted to hear but i suppose maybe we were expecting a little more. So the journey continues.

Thanks again everyone for all your support not sure if i would have been able to get this far without your held and support and will keep you posted.

Thanks

Antoinette

Oh Antoinette, please don't be too disappointed. It has to be a good sign that the surgeon does not require to see you again, so she must really be on the right track? Maybe just a bit of strengthening now and she will be there. But if the main part of the healing is done then you should not be too upset. Just get her to take it easy and after a couple of months she should be right to go be a normal puppy again... and you guys can have a life again!!!

I'm so sorry to hear your disappointment though Antoinette... Please try to keep your chin up and concentrate on all the good healing she has done and the confidence the specialist has. That's the main thing along with her renewed puppy vigour and happiness!!!

SEnding a big virtual hug your way... I know how you feel, but there is alot to be happy about as well.

If you need to talk let me know.

Lots of love to you and Mallee,

Kel

Thanks for the reply Kel - you are just too good to me, always making me see things a bit differently. Brock and i have decided that we will start exercising her more, in an effort to build up the back end starting with a walk, a short one, down the street tonight if she behaves, and slowly increase the exercise weekly. She will continue to be in the cage while we are not at home, but be out of the cage as much as possible while we are at home, starting on the leash and when she quitens down off the leash, but that i doubt will be for awhile, as she is as mad as a cut snake as you would be after spending 4mths in a cage.

Our surgeon did sound very pleased with her considering everything she has been through, but as we would have, he would have also loved to have seen her fully healed as it has been 4 mths now, and that should have been plenty of time. But, nothing with Mallee is text book!!....lol......

So after thinking about it all this morning i have come to the conclusion that it is not as bad, as i first thought!! She has come such a long way and she is showing so much improvement, and keeps getting stronger and stronger. Its just hard sometimes to remember what it was like to have her healthy and able bodied, but am reminding myself that it was either this way or no way!!

So i am feeling alot better about it all. Will give you an update hopefully over the weekend about how she goes with her walkies.

Give Chloe and big hug from me and one for yourself also.

Antoinette. XxoO

Hi Antoinette,

If the surgeon has said he does not need to see you again that's a really good sign  , really it is. Our surgeon said much the same thing after our 1st lot of follow up x-rays, that we could dispense with the next set if we wished. We got them done anyway, just for peace of mind. We kept up with the K9 physio as well, then the physio said we didn't need to go anymore the ROM was so good ;) . Young bones heal quicker but be careful not to overdo it until the healing is complete.

Who was your surgeon (have lost track), PM me if you prefer.

Cheers,

Corine

HI All!!

Corine - i have pm'd you with the name of Mallee's surgeons.

The surgeon said he would only want to see us now in a pain mangament kind of role or only if Mallee pulls up really sore from loose screws or anything like that - which hopefully fingers crossed does not happen!! He said that he can only document so much with Mallee and did not feel it necessary to put her under again for more xrays in a month or so.....So yes, you are right Corine it is good news!!!

I think as long as we are aware that she still has a tiny bit of healing to do and that we do not push her too fast to soon that things should be fine. Mallee is walking really well. We took her for a short walk - well more of a sniff around the front yard last night and just along the footpath to the neighbours house and she had an absolute ball!!! Yay finally walking the dog ;) as breif as it was it was just great to see Mallee wandering around sniffing everything her little tail sticking straight up in the air, and her smiling away looking so proud of herself!!! Her walking has not changed that much since the op, she tends to just swing her back legs out a bit more then previously as she always kind of had a funny little trot! You can tell when she is getting tired as she tends to get a little wobbly on her right leg, as thats still not as strong as the left. But we are really happy with her!! She even got to say hello to three little dogs being walked past our house - well they were only interested in eating Mallee, and all Mallee was interested in doing was licking them...she was really good though, no jumping around or anything, which i thought she would do considering she has not seen another dog in 4mths!!!! I was frightened that she would go a bit crazy the first time she saw a dog again but she was very well behaved, even sat down when Brock asked her to - thank god we took her to puppy preschool!!! :p

She had another good day today, she finally got to lounge around the back yard soaking up the sun which she also totally enjoyed. We have not had her out much to just lounge around as she seems to be too interested in chasing bugs, but since she has been out the last few days she has quiten a bit which is good, so with the continued longer breaks out of the cage, it should make it easier on her and on us as she wont be as full of beans as she usually is when she gets out!!

Anyway guys i will leave it there - hope you all have/had a good weekend - and will give you another update next week.

Hope all is well with everyone and that all the pooches are coming along well.

Antoinette

Hi everyone!

Hope there comes some healing bug after all!

Chloe is just not so young, it will heal eventually, don't rush! maybe some massage will do good, fasten the processes around the bone?

Still keeping paws crossed for Malee! I actually know a dog who was run over by a car, all her pelvis was crushed and she has a lot of metal on it. She's about 7 now, absolutely normal, runs and jumps. She is small (tibbie) though.

Stella had a diarrhea in the cage recently, too  OMG I wasnt home than, so my OH had to deal with it, good excersise for him... Whats strange is that Stella didnt eat anything new, she always has same food. I can only think about the water outside, cane toads sit in it sometimes at night.

Stella is still OK, we have seen our vet. She will sit in the cage for another month, but same time she can go for walks up to an hour. She is used not to stand on the sore leg, I dont know haw to make her use it more. Her good leg looks really croocked when she stands on three.

Antoinette, I'm so glad that Mallee is getting out and about and being such a good girl. Once she is out on a regular basis she will quieten down much more... it's just the novelty of being free that gets her so worked up. I'm also glad that she is doing so well. I noticed that Chloe has the same walk where she sort of rolls her leg, but it's only noticable if you look really hard. Fingers crossed she will be healed in no time and running around like a REAL dog again!!!

Koza, glad to hear that Stella is on her road to recovery as well. Hopefully it will only be another month. Is your vet concerned that she is not using the leg and holding it up? Do you know the reason she is not using it yet?

Anyway, better run i'm soooooo busy at work.

Glad to hear everyone is on the right track and healing well!!!!

I've been doing a fair amount of googling due to my own dog not being well. In amongst all my readings, I'm sure I read that there is a link between Thyroidism and Cruciate Ligament Ruptures. Also, as most of you are probably aware, Thyroidism is a condition more common/prevelant in dogs than you'd think.

If anyone wants to know the link for the source of the information I read, let me know and I'll see if I can re-dig it up. :D

Reference to ligament rupture (and that's all they seem to be, for the most part - references without a lot or any explanation) are scant in amongst the Lymphocytic Thyroiditis literature, but it is there:

1. Lymphocytic Thyroiditis

I could only find one of the ones I read. There were at least one or two more, and I'm sure they made a little more direct reference to crutiate ligament ruptures than this one does.

I've looked (again) through a few other reference sources, but I cannot locate the ones I'm after. If I can find them at another time, I'll post back here. I'm positive I'm not dreaming it up. :D
