Not sure about Koza, but I don't know of any doggy swimming pools around our area (and not sure if Chloe would go for that!!). Chloe has built up fantastic muscle tone from just walking and pottering around. Not going for official 'walks' but just around the yard. We have been building up since around week 6, very slowly... just letting her walk around a little bit longer at a time. Now she is at the point where she is left to walk around freely (under supervision) and is only penned when someone can not be out with her. So if she wants to get up and move around we let her, as long as it's done sensibly (which isn't always possible ). She has even started to play alot more with her toys (no balls of course), but she gives her Bunny a good shake and toss and the squeaker a work out. This morning on my way off to work I let her out of her pen and she came to warm up the car with me, then went for a walk out in the front yard to see Mama watering the garden and to check out her 'territory'. She just potters around of her own accord. Really the only time she is on lead now is if the neighbours are working near the fence (she hates our neighbours) or any other time when she is in danger of perhaps becoming silly and doing herself damage. So I guess it was just a natural progression to walking a little bit more and more all the time, so the muscle has built up with natural use. Not sure if it's possible to do with Mallee though as her op was much more severe and delicate. Maybe Chloe has also built up muscle faster because of the pressure from her unoperated leg as well??? But I'm really amazed at how quickly she built it up and how solid the muscle is now. Poor Mallee will build it up in no time I'm sure... I guess the key is to just build it all up slowly and not to let her overdo it which I know you guys are doing well. Give Mallee a big kiss from us!!! Mallee has built up some muscle tone, not quite as much as we would have like but she is getting there i suppose. The hard with with Mallee is that she is still just a pup, and we therefore don't really get many "quite" times with her - its always 100% go go go......We had her out last night in the lounge room and she just did not want to sit down, which i suppose is understandable as thats all she does, sit and lie down - she spotted her ted and that was it basically dragged me across the lounge into the dining room to get her ted and kill it......i had to laugh but Brock freaked out as she got hold of it and just shock the poor teddy bear to death. I told him to relax she will be ok as Iam sure if it hurt her to do that she would stop, but to see the smile on her face was fantastic!!! She is slowly being able to be a bit more of a real dog again, but i can't help but feel sorry for her at times. I am anxiously waiting for the next xrays - the count down is on. I can't wait for the day that i can take her out of the front gates for a short walk down the road. I must admitted the times i find it the hardest is when i see people, usual when i am driving home from work, walking all their dogs, and i cant help but think "do they know how lucky there are"!!!!!! ONe day soon i am sure we wil all be taking our little ones for walks again - i can not wait for that day!!!!! Just wondering as we are at the stage with Mallee that we have to start to really build up her muscles in the hinds legs in preparation of her hopefully finally coming out of her cage, we have done some swimming and she gets lots of on leash and sling walks around the back yard, but we have been wondering what way is best to get the muscle built back up swimming or walking????? Thanks, malleerr! Swimming would be great! We just walk her, slowly, 5, 10 and now 15 min a day, on the footpath (not grass). She uses the leg when plays with Solly, too (we supervise them) - she pushes up, which is good for it, i think. If we walk her on grass, she tends to skip on three. I'm hoping that you will be able to give me some direction as to what to expect over the next few months. I've read through most of this thread and it does relate to what our problem is. My neighbours 6 yr old female golden retriever has dislocated her knee and torn her cruciate ligament. She's due to be operated on on Wednesday and in the meantime has been placed on Prolet. Since coming home from the vets this morning she has vomitted 3 times, can any of you tell me if this is a side effect of prolet or could this be a reaction to any medication she may have been given at the surgery when she was x-rayed. As for your neighbours dog - poor thing!! I have never heard of Prolet - Mallee was only ever on Rimadyl or Carporfen. It could possibly be a side effect to the anasetic (spl) that they would of given when she had the x-rays done. If you or your friend are really concerned you should phone the vet that did the x-rays and ask them about it. Sorry i can't really help you much - you could try doing a goggle search on the Prolet and see what comes up there and possible side effects. Pls keep us post as to how it all goes. You can just call the vet and check out, if it's serious. Stella had morphine once, and she looked like dying, it was very scary! But vet said, its normal and not to worry and let her lay quietely. ************* Didn't want to open a new topic, so i'll put it here LOL, the new procedure with Stella - she eats ON ORDER! )) She is paranoic about Solly's food, but he has Bonnie light, wich is absolutely unsuiatable for Stella, as she eats very little and gets poor coat easily. Her food is Eagle pack Holistic with something tasty. Yet she would stay and watch Solly eat, and ask for his food ) (sure, if I swap the foods, she will ask for HIS, again). So we shout "Eat!", and she goes and eats :D) A bit. So it repeats 5 times. Mallee was on morphine while in hospital - and it was terrible she looked all sunken in and drolling everywhere, almost frothing at the mouth - she was constantly wet it was HORRID. They everntually took her off the morphine and put an opiate (spl) collar on her which was similar but did not have the side effects that morphine does. Glad that that part of it all is all over. oskar Posted February 24, 2006 Share Posted February 24, 2006 Thanks for the welcome and for the info, she hasn't been ill since yesterday so I would say that it was a reaction to the anaesthetic. Was a bit of a worry last night due to not being able to contact anyone directly for advice. The vets have an after hours service but its for emergencies only, abusing that service just isn't something I could do being as it could take time away from someone who did need urgent assistance. Anyway, thanks again for your responses, I really appreciate it. As far as I know Prolet is an anti-inflamitory(sp) drug, reasonably new on the market. malleerr Posted March 1, 2006 Share Posted March 1, 2006 Hey Kelly - Just wondering how Chloe was and whether you have booked her in for her x-rays yet or whether she has already had them. Mallee is going great guns, which is excellent. Either next week or the week after she will be having her x-rays. We have been walking her more and she has already developed some more muscle which is just excellent, only problems is we are having trouble trying to slow her down as she feels so bloody good. I think the next drama will be letting go a little bit each day until she can be a normal pup again without you worrying at every step!!! Chloe is going in for her xrays next week. I am hoping if I leave it 5 full weeks that the results will be better. I am really excited, but so nervous. I hope all is well. I guess it also means that her other leg is getting closer to being operated on too, which is good, but it just seems like going back to square one... you know? Chloe is going really well as well. I was horrified yesterday when I had some food in my hands and she was so excited that she jumped... yes jumped up with her front legs onto me. I nearly died and gently lowered her down. She did it again today, and while it makes me feel fantastic to see her able to do it again, I am just afraid that she will hurt herself somehow and stuff up the xrays... So like you I know what you mean about Mallee trying to do so much now and us worrying like anything!!! We are preparing for Chloe's next operation. The area her pen is in has become a little dusty, so we have bought rolls of artificial grass so our spoilt girl doesn't get herself dirty or muddy!!! hahahaha!!! I can't believe how spoilt she really is sometimes. And even though she has so many toys than she knows what to do with (and has even started burying them), I just had 2 more new toys delivered for her today... I sit at work looking for toys or similar to buy online to make her happy!!! I'm looking for the perfect, very special lead and collar set as well for when she is healed and goes on her very first walk... cause I will be so proud of my brave girl. I wish someone would spoil me so much!!! So has Mallee been swimming again yet? Or just walking more and more (with or without sling)? So we will probably get the results of the xrays at similar times, so we can only hope for the best now. I'm really glad that she is doing so well Antoinette. Almost there now. I have some gorgeous pics of Chloe that I will upload. I showed them to everyone at work that laughed at the expense I have gone to on her operation/s and asked who would not give their last penny to save such a cutie... or maybe I'm just biased??? Duncan has had no problems with his leg since being given the all clear, him and the baby run each other ragged . Duncan has to have another anasthetic tomorrow, not related to his leg though. He's having an endoscopy/colonoscopy to try to determine the cause of his recurrent diarrheoa and weight loss. Poor lad's not even 2 yet, small wonder he hates the vet surgery now . Please let us know how he is doing. I hope it's not serious. I can certainly understand why he doesn't like the vets. Chloe used to be a once a year vaccs only type of girl she was so healthy, but the last year or so it has been so constant. She is going to absolutely hate going to have her other leg operated on... but this time I will not go and visit her during her stay in the surgery. It only upsets both of us way too much. I will just rely on the phone calls to monitor her progress. I hope that little Mallee heals as well as Duncan has and can enjoy her puppy life as well. I think Chloe has done really well to adapt to all these changes so late in her life. And you know, she's starting to get her puppy energy back !!!!!!! Let us know how you go with Duncan Corine... Stella is still better, apart from that she decided to get rid of the unabsorbed stitching inside the scar and chewed it out . Big hole! Had to sit 3 days in Elis. collar again. The sore leg is almost like good one, she keeps it up when turning, but walks pretty well. And yesterday she deterred a burgular (sp?)!!! Of course it just makes me dread putting her through it all over again... but I guess it has to be done. Go Stella... bad leg and all and she still can scare a burgular!!! What a girl!!! I'm so glad they didn't get a chance to take anything though. Great news that Stella is still doing so well. Chloe pulled some of her stitches as well, which made the scar look a bit funny but I've noticed the bump has gone down (or is it just the hair growing back??? who knows!!). Thoughts are with you Corine let us know how he goes. Well done Stella - hope she gave them a real scare so they don't come back! Mallee licked opened a hole in her scar not so long ago which we presumed was an internal stitch - it healed up well with time, but look iccky for a while. Mallee is doing so well at the moment, it is so tempting just to let her of the lead while she is inside and calm, but, we know we can't not until the next set of x-rays at least. I only wish though she would calm down a bit, she is only a pup so is handling it as well as can be expected!! She is still chasing (well tries to) cabbage moths, flies anything that moves so as we walk her around the yard i have to go on bug watch - trying to spot them before she does so we can change direction and go the other way, only problem is her eyesight is so dam good!!!!! She is constanly finding them. She has tried to do some pretty stupid things of late, last night while she was investigating the house - something that makes her so happy, as she has not been down the hallway in 4 mths as we only started letting her go down there this week, she tried to jump up on the spare bed both front legs up on it - scare the begezzers out of me and i quickly supported her while i lowered her down. When she is out of the cage and gets excited she tries to do zoomies around the lounge - so glad she is on the lead - she is rolling around every where lies on the lounge room floor with all four legs sticking straight up in the air and wriggles then she gives you this look of "look what i can do" She is sooo cheeky!!! Anyway its just so good that all our pups are doing well, fingers crossed it continues this way - onward and upwards.....lol..... I'am dreading next week and looking forward to it at the same time, Mallee goes in for her x-rays, I am anxious to see if she has fully healed, she would have to have wouldn't she its been 18 weeks on Tues!!! Also worried about what Brock will say if the surgeon says she has to spend any more time in the cage, but will deal with that when it happens, no use worrying about it now, hey?? Hope you all have a good weekend with your families and furkids - I might even take Mallee out past the front gate for a little look tonight if she is calm enough, which i doubt! Antoinette. P.S I have finally found someone that had a dog that had the same op as Mallee and it lived to be 9 with no problems what so ever, just like a normal dog - so that has really made my day, as one the hardest thing Brock and I have felt is not knowing what she will eventually be like, so fingers crossed for a good result next week. Duncan is back from the vet, very groggy but happy to be home. Poor lad had to have an enema before his procedure as the "Colon Lightly" did not do the trick. You try squirting a litre of revolting tasting liquid into a dog one syringe at a time. No way know he would drink it by himself . The specialist has done a number of biopsies which will take a while to come back. He found some inflammation but nothing specific. He suspects Inflammatory Bowel Disease but we shall have to wait and see. The scariest thing about this is the weight loss, he's down to 18.1 kgs and my 6 mth old pup weighs more. You must be worried, try to stay postive, do you know when you will get some specific results yet, hoping for you that the wait wont be too long, nothing like waiting for results its a killer!! You must have great patience to get a litre of water down his gob with a syringe!!!....lol...now that would have been a sight, I can only imagine the struggle. We had a good weekend, Mallee seems to be progressing really well. Brock took her for a walk around the back yard on Saturday with no sling, and i couldn't believe it but she went to the toliet for number 1s and 2s all by her self with no sling, funny the things we get exicted over, this was a first for Mallee since the op, we have let her go with very little support but never with no sling at all!!! Mallee was of course so pleased with herself, trotting around with her tail up in the air saying "look at me, look at me" . The only thing now is that when ever she comes out of the cage she will not let you put the sling on, turns it into a big game, and when you do get it on her she constantly swinging around trying to chew on it. So heres hoping things are well on the way to improvement!! Her walking is really great at the moment, if anything she is gaining too much confidence and trying to do to much to quickly. Its getting harder and harder to get her into the cage when its time, so these all must be postive signs. The only thing worring us know, is when she comes out of the cage for good, what a stress that is going to be, but, we have to give her a chance and we have to be prepared that she probably will hurt herself now and again, and there will be nothing we can do about it. Next thing to work out is how to slow her down, our surgeon reckons we will need to tie bricks around her neck ....lol..... i don't even think that would help!!! She is just so full of puppy energy!!! Anyway i hope you all had great weekends also! Will have to post some updated pics soon, good luck this week Kel with Chloe's x-rays - we are thinking of you!! All point to one great fact: she must be feeling so much better. And yes, after all you guys have been through, it must be such a relief and the small things are what REALLY count!!! So you should be so proud of each of her little achievements. It's been such a long road for her and yourselves... and you should also be proud of yourselves for getting her successfully to this point. She's a really lucky girl. Well Chloe has her appt for xrays on Wednesday. I'm also really nervous. Unfortunately her surgeon is on holidays though, which means her other leg will probably not be done until after the 20th of March or so. Not that it matters, but it's just extra time that the poor bugger has to be restrained and we all just want it to be OVER!!! Another surgeon will take the xrays and give us the verdict, but I'm quite happy with that. I have told them I want to see the xrays this time and discuss her progress in detail.
