berly Posted October 11, 2006 Share Posted October 11, 2006 Sorry been super busy lately - really need to work on my time management skills considering i have so much uni work to do (only 2 months left until i am finished with uni!! woo hoo), balancing 2 jobs as well as having a inability to say no when friends ask me to go away for the weekend to holiday houses (gotta love friends with holiday houses). On top of that I have had no car thanks to my neighbour reversing into it.... Quick update on Jordan. He is doing well, havent seen any improvement for a while but there has been any decline in his condition. His leg seems to be in the same state it was a month ago? We have been going on 15 minute walks every day or second day and no problems there. Long overdue vet appointment tonight as i have had no car so we shall see what the vet says. Another girl around the place would be good, there is always room, Mallee will need a Nanny while we are there as i am sure getting her into the boat and having her stay in it will bring a few issues........i can only imagine the fun that will be. I am sure Chloe and Mallee would get along considering they have heard each others life stories....hehe. I would have loved to see the pics of you as a little whippersnipper. Well I'd love to come along on hols, but my boss thinks I'm indispensible, pity he doesn't pay me like I am I'd love to be able to say that I am too, but I can safely assure everyone that I'm not!! Geez if billowing curtains scares the bejeezes out of Mallee Moo, I can't imagine what being in a boat will do!!! Hey you must promise to show plenty of pics!!! Chloe's nose is out of joint lately... Mallee has been flirting and making way too many goo goo eyes at Bouf, so now Chloe wants a boyfriend too. So I've lined up the candidates. Firstly there is Duncan. Handsome, suave the whole kit, however may be a bit overactive for ChloBo. Chloe thinks age is just a number and would like a toy boy, but we think that Duncan may be a player... just secretly :p . So he's been ruled out for someone his own age. Then we thought about Jordan. Now he's a handsome boy too, same age group so activity level is on par, nice strapping boy (Chloe doesn't like short asses), and they have their war injuries in common. We think this could be a match made in Heaven, so now Chloe is going to make eyes at Jordan. :D ;) ;) Hey Kim, thanks for the update, hope your appt at the vets goes well. Sounds like Jordan is doing well, I guess they can only improve to a certain level before it starts to slowly plateau. Lucky you having only 2 months of Uni to go too... what ya studying? Still working on the pics Antoinette, will definately post them at some point. My blue ACD girl is not to be missed, she was stunning (but I may be biased)!!! And Sam was such a lovable mutt!!! Duncan is too high maintenance... he's what we call a 'metrosexual' dog. He looks stunning and takes more time getting pampered than the girls. Can regularly be found preening amongst all the pretty,swooning, adoring fans... Chloe doesn't stand a chance. But you do bring up a good point with Jordan... But he can't help it how mum dresses him (oh goodness a Mummy's boy!!)... he does feel embarassed about it, so he clearly doesn't enjoy it!!! ANYWAY, Chloe just so happens to like purple... her favourite bunny is purple, and it brings out the violet in her eyes... so she happens to think he would look pretty suave in purple (will reserve final judgment until we see the brightness of the purple though....). berly Posted October 11, 2006 Share Posted October 11, 2006 hallo all firstly the purple harness - it just means he is in touch with his feminine side - oh who i am kidding...i was so ashamed taking him to the vet today, at least noone said what a beautiful girl....I also realised that my car is purple, and his lead has purple in it as well - all a subconsious coincidince i swear!! Im taking the harness to work tomorrow to spray paint it with some racing stripes or something... Jordan is a bit blase and not too mention lazy so i hope chloe doesnt get her hopes up! he's a lone ranger that jordan but hey if the right lady just came along... anyways went to the vet today in his purple harness (it does keep him very still in the car except for when he goes nuts when he tries to get out when he knows we have reached the destination and gets pulled back due to the seat belt but i guess thats better than him slipping around during the whole trip). It went very well, vet was quite pleased and said to keep going with what i am doing - 10 to 15 minutes a day and then bring it up to 30 minutes over the next couple of weeks.... and now Jordan has to go on sasha's blend so im looking at getting that asap - is anyone else using it? how much do you pay for it if you dont mind me asking? ive only heard good things about it... anyways here at long last are some photos of the infamous harness - they are pretty crappy because he wasnt too pleased with modelling it... How much in touch is the worry!!! ;) He looks gorgeous still, and practicality is the main thing (see Antoinette he's a PRACTICAL male too!!!). Great news that the vet is happy with him, you must be doing a really good job with him. Chloe is also on Sasha's Blend (hey something else they have in common). I used to buy it from the vet and I think it was around $60, last time I bought it from the VetStop (www.vetstop.com.au) website and it was $45 plus postage I think. Pretty good seeing I bought a bunch of other stuff too. There are other websites that would probably be just as cheap too. I think some are listed in the DOL advertisers. Chloe really likes the stuff, I think it makes her bland diet food a bit tastier. It lasts her well into the third month, but I do give her slightly more than the recommended dosage!!! I heard Joint Guard is pretty good too. But Sasha's has been good for Chloe so I'm happy to stay with it. They have some other bite types and capsules too if powder is not convenient for you. Laziness is no problems for Chlo-Bo, she's the queen of lazy... although once she gets excited there's no stopping her!!! Nothing you say can dissuade her from making eyes at Jordy... and she also sends a sexy wink!!! Hehheheheehhe. Corine, I'm sure Dunc's head is swelling from all the attention... but he's a stunner and he knows it... I guess if you've got it, flaunt it huh? Just lots of heartbroken pups along the way... 'sigh' Chloe's just too old for that... Naughty girl Chloe found some bread that the idiot next door neighbours just keep throwing over the fence. It's really making me angry... no matter how much we throw it back over their own fence they just keep on going... I'm at wits end. I caught her this morning and got to her just before she swallowed it... and she got a smack. I know it's not her fault, and as much as I'd rather smack the neighbours, she must learn not to eat strange food. Easier said than done though... Anyone have any ideas on how to stop the neighbours? If we were to ask them to stop (as we have) it will make them more determined (obviously no love lost between us)? I was thinking maybe to send a letter saying the RSPCA had been warned and given photographic evidence and that if they continued they would be fined by the RSPCA? Sounds dumb I know but I don't know what else to do. They throw over HUGE amounts of bread. Anyways, better go... put on your thinking caps and help me think of a way to deter the neighbours... bilby Posted October 23, 2006 Share Posted October 23, 2006 WE'RE BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 bloody weeks ! but we're back on the net ...I have missed you guys so much !! Bizarre last couple of months ... but am now putting it all firmly behind me. Thanks for all the care & sympathy about my sheep. It was shocking .. but I was overwhelmed with the reaction from the ranger, the neighbours, passers-by, Michael ( who buried them all for me) & the vet. Everyone was just so very kind. Michael, my foster-goats' owner has just been given 6 chocolate coloured 18 month ewes .. we're picking them on the weekend .. & they're coming here of course. Bouf is looking stunning .. so so sound .. waiting to hear from Murdoch about the next (final!) appointment. Be back with pics soon .. just need to catch up with everything so forgive me if I've missed stuff I should have answered to .. I turned my back for 2 seconds this morning and guess who I found sitting up proudly in the front seat of my car??? Yep, the girl had snuck in the cheeky bugger (and was also sitting ON TOP of my lunch and handbag ). I can't tell you the amount of hair I now have to rid my car of, but I was so pleased that she CAN jump into my car (which is pretty low anyway, but not the point!!!). Of course we carefully carried her out (much to her dismay) so it looks like we will have to take her on a nice drive somewhere fun very soon.... especially so now that she doesn't have to use the car to go to the scary vets anymore!!! berly Posted October 27, 2006 Share Posted October 27, 2006 Quick update on Jordan... still same ol same ol... Weightbearing at about 85%... I've put him on Sasha's Blend which he is really doing well on as before this at night he would be holding the leg up again - combination of the colder temps compared to day as well as being on it all day... but a week after taking Sasha's, it doesnt happen anymore so that's great... Still going for only 20 minute walks every 2nd day and he seems fine with it..will step it up soon.. Apart from that, I bought him a clam shell but he doesnt fit in it - he looks pretty ridiculous just sitting in it...will post pictures up soon Sounds like everyone else is doing well - hope it stays that way!! Poor Jordan we use him so much for our own amusement!!! Chloe is doing well, she's a happy girl and we are slowly getting all her winter coat out. For a cattle dog, the amount of hair that's coming out is truly shocking!!! But she looks skinnier now (plus she has lost some more weight :D ) I'm not on here as much cause my work is cracking down on internet usage so I will have to log on at home (usually too lazy!!), and I try to get in here as much as possible!!! So good to hear positive news from you though Kim, let's keep hoping Jordan continues to improve!!! Bouf is doing so well .. hasn't shown any imbalance or limping for over 7 weeks now. We are cleared by Murdoch & don't need to go back again unless there's some emergency. I'd assumed that I had to have his other leg but Tom the surgeon was appalled at the idea of getting it done "just in case" which was great news for me. If I keep his hamstrings strong with daily walks, I can avoid it all together apparently. It was suggested that I could have 6 monthly x-rays done to check the joint if I was wanted to, & I think I'll do that. Part of the reason fpr Bouf's great recovery is that his cartilage/meninscus was intact which is apparently quite unusual with a cruciate ligament rupture, so I want to make sure that I take action before there is any significant deterioration in the other leg, & the regular X-rays will enable us to do that. I think I'm being way over pro-active .. but hey ! better than last time. I can see such a huge difference in the muscle on his haunches. And he just climbs into the back seat of my ditsy Daewoo with no problem or hesitation at all. So much I wish I'd known before that I'm still berating myself for. I thought he didn't like car travel & spent ages doing the tempting treats in car stuff .. whereas now it's SO SO obvious that it was that climbing in was so painful. He just looks so strong & so comfortable these days. I would recognise all those little signs now, but he was my 1st big big dog .. also my 1st real sook .. & I just thought they all sat that way, were scared of everything etc etc. Good to hear everyone else is also doing well. I just bought Sashas Blend for the 1st time this week but am giving it to them all. Gem is one of those dogs that can detect the tiniest pill in a mound of food & eat everything but that little pill, but she loves the fishy smell too & slurps it up. I've changed local vets to the practise that came & helped me euthanise the sheep, & I have a gorgeous new vet, Rob, who is so enthusiastic & interested. So far he's - detected an ancient grass seed in Bouf's ear ( grrrrrrrr .. I had him to the other vets for that problem 6 weeks ago ), & sedated & removed grass seed in 3 hours for only $77 !!! - removed grass seed from Fergie the ferrert's eye - $22 - sedated & X-rayed Feral the ferret because she seemed to fall over some times. It's just arthritis .. I hadn't realised she's over 5 years old, but his interest & care was so sweet - given Gem a geriatric check & recommended really good management methods. ( I had a pretty good idea what she needs but let him tell me to see if he oversold .. which he didn't at all) The practise is really a farming practise - I never seen a German Shepherd described as "Small Animal Consult" before , but I am really happy with them. How unreasonable of work, Kelly .. I'm actually the meanie at our place that gets grumpy when I check out how much Net usage is personal .. but only if it is excessive & totally irrelevant .. I'm so pleased that the newest patients in Jordan and Bouf have come through so well.... we've got a great strike rate on this thread!!! Also good to hear that you have found a new vet that you have so much confidence in. I would also like to do the same, but as Chloe is getting on now I feel it is not right to change at this late stage. She's doing okay, she's such a tough bugger anyways. She is losing weight and looking very svelte lately, which I'm really impressed with. It's been colder here lately so she has been a bit slower getting up and down, but she is showing no signs of pain or limping and is still waiting at the gate when she hears her lead rattling for walkies. So I'm very pleased. Like I've said before Bilby, I wish I had known alot more and saw this coming.... but that's what we pay the vets for. I guess if you haven't had a dog with such problems before it can't be helped. I had previously had an old girl with arthritis and the symptoms were the same, the vet never mentioned cruciate until late last year so we weren't really to know any better. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but luckily both Chloe and Bouf (having endured pain and the long healing process) have come through better than ever.... so for that we should be very thankful. We have all been very lucky to have had such great results. I don't think I've ever heard of a surgeon doing the procedure 'just in case'!!! How horrifying. I know the stats are pretty bad for the second leg also blowing, but from all I've read they usually do follow up xrays and do not consider the surgery again unless the other leg shows signs of a bung cruciate. I think you're on the right track with xrays every half year or so to keep a check... and we all know the symptoms now, so I'm sure Bouf will be fine and if the worst happens, you'll know the drill!!! Keeping the meniscus in was also good... at least there is some protection between the bones. Chloe is meniscus-less TOTALLY, hers were totally trashed!!! I believe that the meniscus flapping around when it's damaged is the most painful part of the whole situation, so Bouf was lucky. I have heard though of dogs having to have it removed at a later date as it does damage over time, so just another thing for you to watch!!! Our dogs must get so paranoid of us watching their every waking movement. I still freak out if Chloe jumps up too fast or moves awkwardly... but she grins and bears it... and I'm not too sure she doesn't secretly love the attention!!! I put a 'saddle' on her today and made her be a Melbourne Cup runner... was very funny and kept me amused. She wouldn't budge at first but once she saw me rolling on the floor laughing at her, was very happy to parade around and give me a bit of a gallop!!! Wouldn't put my money on her though!!! Although she did win quite a bit in our work sweeps (yes she always gets entered.... she loves the Cups too!!). Let us know how you think the Sasha's works Bilby? I know it's not a miracle cure, but I do feel it's helped Chloe out, as does Kim with Jordan. Yes work is a bit of a bummer, but I can always be sneaky!!!! I just learn to be more careful that's all!!! I feel it is my stress relief from the crap I put up with in my office!! Anyways, can't wait to see pics of the 2 newest bionic dogs... Congrats on such a great result Bilby, it was a really stressful time for you with so much else going on, but you've made it!!! Hugs to the Bouf-ster, Kel and Chloe PS.... malleerr Posted November 8, 2006 Share Posted November 8, 2006 Well Hello All, I am finally back, sorry for the delayed post. Glad that all are well, and coming along great guns. Sounds like Bouf is coming along wonderfully, and so fantastic that you have found a great new vet, we also were over the moon when we found a new friendly vet that was on the same wave length as Brock Mallee and myself, it just makes it so much easier.!!. Well we had a great holiday and are soo pleased of our Mallee Moozzle Bum. She is a bush dog through and through. I cannot begin to tell you all how proud and relieved we are with how Mallee coped while away. It was a real eye opener for not only Brock and myself but also Mallee i think. The place we camped at (Gunbower on the Murray) has no facilities or anything like that just lots and lots of bush and water. We were a tad nervous to say the least on how Mallee would cope with it all. To start with we have never ever had Mallee off leash and it was going to be a bit hard to have her on leash all the time while we were away, so to start straight off we had to bite the bullet and let her off leash and much to our surprise she was fantastic, came back when called, didn't stray too far away from camp and was generally in seventh heaven with it all, the first day there she actually had a smile on her face the whole time, night time didn't even worry her at all as long as she had her jacket on, that is until the Mopokes (Tawny Frog mouth owls) came out and starting calling to each other, then she would tremble and promptly take herself to bed in the tent. The other worry we had was the amount of exercise she would get, as she could and would do a hell of a lot more walking then at home, and it was a bit of a worry on how she would handle that. We took her Rimadyl just in case she was in a bit of pain, but at the same time did not really want to have to give her any, as the medication she has for bee stings cannot be taken in conjunction with Rimadyl so it was a bit of a toss up on what to do, but thankfully there was no need for either. We worked out that she was going for 5 kms walks each day with us and then doing all the normal walking around camp, running up and down the bank of the river and swimming. We cannot believe how well she coped with the exercise and amount of it and she actually thrived, you should see her hind leg muscles now, even better than before all the ops and dramas. Brock and i could not keep the smiles off our faces. She just made us so proud, we only wish her surgeons and nurses could have seen her, all the comments made about her and what little she would be able to do have all been squashed pretty much, she has really become our little big wonder dog.....lol..... ;) We did have a few dramas with her though, well it is Mallee we are talking about and not everything could be rosey for her as trouble does tend to be her middle name. Day 2 she began eating grass non stop, we tried everything to stop her as it was all in seed but nothing worked, a stint locked in the car just made for a noicey afternoon so we decided to let her go, which then proceeded to copious amounts of vomitting. I reckon she would have consumed around half a bail of grass towards the end, and as we are sooky lalas with Mallee thought something might be seriously wrong and drove into town to see the vets, but they were shut, and by the time we got back in the bush and to camp she had come good and got over her fixation with the grass and vomitting. Thank God!! Weird - not sure what the thing was there, but presume that she may have hurt her throat or something along those lines. Day 4 came the dreaded bee sting, a real worry for us as the last time she was stung by a bee we thought she was not going to make it, instant vomitting and swelling lumps and bumps everywhere, her head swelled so much her eyes were forced shut and the vets told us that the reactions would only get worse with each sting. Thank god they were wrong.....again....... We were having a lovely afternoon frolicking in the river swimming and generally having a good old laugh with Moo when all of a sudden she rolled over on her front right foot, and it look kindly strange like the two middle toes were missing. Brock picked her up and run her up the bank to the car as we thought she may have cut her foot in the River or something, but on checking i found the sting and bum end of a bee, pulled it out, rushed to find her medicine and by the time i got back she was up walking around, with no signs of any allergic reaction - so no medicine needed. She rested for about 2 hours looking sorry for herself, and that was it, over and done with, YAY no swelling or bumps, nothing, hopefully the bee sting thing was a one off and that is one less thing we can worry about..... Day 5 she was running around through the bush and came limping back to camp with a ruddy treble fishing hook stuck in her back pad of her foot, so a little bush surgery and she was all fixed up and ready to go again...... Day 10 last day there while packing the car up, she came over to me foaming and froathing at the mouth, i was thinkigh s**t here we go again, when she vomitted all over my foot (yeap thanks for that) - a pile of all things,..... steel wool, god knows where she got it from, some pig obvioulsy just threw it into the bush as we didnt take any with us. Obviously did not sit well with her stomach, funny that hey.....who would have thought that eating something like steel wool would do you no good. So anyways the few little dramas aside, we have been totally blown away by Mallee and her abilities. To walk so far every day, with running around, jumping and being a general terror in between has just opened our eyes to what she can actually do, and also i suppose how stupid and over protective of her we have been. But on the flip side we have been through quite alot with her so i suppose it is understandable to some point that we are protective of her. But gees we must look stupid to some people who don't understand the whole situation. She was soo funny while we were up there - when ever we went to collect fire wood she would have to assist us by bringing back logs and when i say logs i mean logs, they were huge branches, and if we tried to take it off her as it was a decent walk for her back to camp about 2.5kms round trip, she would really get upset and try to rip them out of your arms and fight with you the whole way back to camp, once back there she would drag the wood right up to the pile and place it next to it with the happiest look on her face and wiggle her bum as if to say look at me and my accomplishment, sooo cute. We enjoyed fishing in the boat and Mallee got quite use to the fact that you had to wait a while for some action with the fishing rods, she would sit there and wait and watch till the rod moved, quite funny though once it did, the three of us in a little tinny with the dog jumping around in excitement, a few times we all nearly went overboard, but it only added to the fun. She would cry down at the bank next to the boat if we were not in it and out fishing by the afternoon. So all in all we had a fantastic time, especially once we learnt to relax a bit and just let her go and try not to worry about her hurting herself, which i admit did take a little while. The only time i was totally mad at her was when my BIL and SIL came down with our little nephew for a weekend and brought there old ACD down (who was Brocks "borrow a dog" while we were inbetween our last dog Niki and Mallee) and she just wanted to fight him the whole time, and was actually quite nasty resulting in them both having to be tied up , not much fun for all, but i don't think the boys introduced them to each other probably when they first turned up and Mallee i think was a tad confused that people had just crased her camp site and was a bit protective of us all. So there you have it our holiday in summary, i could go on and on but i really don't want to bore you all with it. The best part of it all was learning Mallee's ability and coming to the decision that we can do a hell of a lot more with her than we thought or even really ever expected. So my dears - i must get back to work now, i started this post first thing this morning at 9am and its now 1.40pm so i am sorry if its a bit jumbled and all over the place but have a mountain of paperwork and files i have to catch up on. Just wanted to say Hi missed you all, esp Kel and my Chlo Boo, had a near divorce and was almost left up the bush by myself because of my excessive dog and DOL talk. Is there such a thing as DOL anonymous I will post pics tomorrow of Mallee on hols as i forgot my camera cord again. Till then take care and i will leave you with a pic of the bend of the river on the NSW side just up River from where we camped so you can see how pretty it is there.....damm NSW bends are always better than the Vic side... Well I'm very proud of Mallee as well. It was a big test for her, and apart from a few hiccups she did very well. You have mentioned before she was a garbage guts, but she REALLY IS!!! That's unbelievable. Chloe is bad but at least she is selective in what she will consume!!! She obviously had an upset tummy hence the grass eating. Chloe is the same and when you see her nibbling at the grass you know what's coming.... I wonder what it is about grass that helps them to throw up???? Should try it next time I feel sick!!! heheheehhe I'm so pleased you had such a wonderful and relaxing break, and that it all went so well. Can't wait for more pics.... I'm so jealous, but now it's back to the grind hey? You guys make me feel better when you panic so much over Mallee, it makes me feel good I'm not the only OCD.... I tell you what, Mallee Moo really does seem to find all the trouble anywhere she goes, but hey, it toughens her up (although I think a fish hook in my foot would be worth a good howl)!!! OUCH!!! And now you can feel much better taking her away again now that you know what she can do, how she will behave, and what needs to be worked on!!! She really has come through her adversity so well and you have every right to be so happy and proud of her.... but remember who got her there!!! You two deserve much of that credit. Nothing exciting happening here... Chloe has runny eyes and I think had some runny poos this morning, but she seems fine (other than a bit sooky). Chloe the wonder dog averted an attempted robbery yesterday (okay it may not be as dramatic as it sounds.... but I'm still proud!!!). It all started when my dad and Chloe were out in the front yard waiting for me to get home from work. A young boy on a bike came past my dad and stopped and asked for his help as there were 3 older boys chasing him trying to steal his mobile phone and wallet etc. My dad, thought he would help by hiding this boy behind our gates in the back yard until the others had gone and given up. So off they went, and before they reached the gate the other 3 boys found them in our driveway. Of course, they came straight for the boy (regardless of my dad, who is a big man... the balls of young kids these days!!!). THAT IS, until Chloe planted herself firmly between them and my dad and the young boy. Her hair went up, she crouched down low and snarled in her meanest growl. NOW THIS, stopped them in their tracks, and they all looked uncertain as they decided what to do. Then Chloe started with her tough girl bark, and they slung some obscenities before deciding it wasn't worth testing the little red dog, and scampering off!!!!! SOOOOOOOO, how is that for brave? Yaay for my tough little girl!!! CRISIS AVERTED!!! CHLOE SAVES THE DAY!!! ;) Pfffffffft, what bung legs?
