arianwen
I took some video of the aggressive tibbie... I didnt get exactly what I wanted, I wanted to show him in different siutations but unfortunately didnt have time and the lady was not taking very well to the new house rules She doesnt understand why she should stop her three boys from playing chaseys with him and why he isnt allowed to sit on the bed/chairs/lounge/tables anymore. I have to say... she is not going to do these changes. He is going into isolation on monday and will be there for two weeks... but I doubt they will do it properly. In the vid I am wearing gloves... dont think for a second that is setting him off... if anything it is making him less full on. Anyone want to check him out, I have it in AVI format but can change to what ever format you like. Best if you have broadband for this I think! The vid is pretty mild, if I had tried to pick him up you would have seen what I meant! I will get another vid of him after isolation. Just reply to this with your email address if you want it... or I can send through MSN. (MSN email aricaer at optusnet.com.au) Ari
Erny
I've PM'd you, Ari. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like much hope for this dog if it stays with this family. What can you do if the family aren't really interested and dedicated?
arianwen
Erny... thats right. She was making excuses for him the entire time! I dont get it!!!! No need to make excuses for him... if she just makes these changes she will be able to keep him and may actually be able to enjoy his company! I was quite disapointed when I left. Only one of the boys came out to watch my demonstration with my own dog of how you are meant to behave with dogs and how dogs should behave with you. You hear the lady on the video asking if she can trade my dog for hers! *LOL* I brought her as an example that any dog can have manners... Skadi is a 12 week old puppy and already sits and stays (including for food). She is a food aggressive dog but I can have her sit and stay even if other dogs are eating her food. I told them Max will never be the sweet little thing that their other dog is and they will have to understand that that means he will have to be treated differently and must have very strict manners. I thought showing how my girl can do it would inspire them to work hard on Max but I think that it just made them focus on how cute and well behaved my giant 12 week cross girl is Let me know how you think I can get them to actually participate! Like I've said... I am no professional. Through experience I know how to behave with dogs, I know how to train them. I do not know how to train people! You hear me in the video calling him a poor little guy and at that second he turns to maul me... but I really do think he is a poor little guy... I know if I took him I could make him better and oh gosh did I come close to taking him. I think my partner would have killed me!
Kelpie-i
arianwen, I have come accross many people like this and unfortunately if they aren't willing to take advice then there is nothing much else you can do. It is usually when something serious happens, that they either decide to make the change or decide to give the dog up. There are tactics which you can employ with these people that MAY make them change their minds although it doesn't always work. Try scaring her with information about dog laws, possible damage to others and law suits that may arise as a consequence of the dog's behavour. Tell her it would cost her $$ if the dog bit someone and the dog would be killed and she would have no-one else to blame but herself. Harsh, probably...the truth will hurt but she will be grateful for your honesty. I have even gone to the extreme of taking photos of what dog bites to children look like. This was a drastic measure but at least the person saw for themselves the sorts of injuries dogs can inflict. Some people just need wake up calls. I have PM'd you with the request for the video. I would like to watch it if alright with you.
Erny
I can't offer any suggestions either, other than what Kelpie-i has given .... even then, if they're not prepared to put in the effort with what they're putting up with now, my feelings are that the threat of expense will only result in their resolve to put the dog to sleep. Only thing I can think of adding is to tell them if they're not prepared to make the effort, this should be their last dog and that they should perhaps own goldfish instead (if any animal at all) - ever. People are frustrating and down right disappointing. If they do opt to put the dog to sleep, I hope they can be made to watch it. Only other option is to send the dog to boarding and training kennels - although by the sounds of it, they wouldn't be interested in the expense. I know it means the dog still has to go back to them, but improvement in the dog might inspire them to listen and heed more than what they're doing now. Tabata
This link should be it: http://www.youtube.com/?v=HH8vCblvlSQ Bet you're glad you had that glove on arianwen!
arianwen
I am uploading the third as we speak. I think it is the most interesting, though I am miffed about it because my partner missed a chunk of it because he want paying attention. But anyway, its a good example. Kelpie-i
Viewed the videos.... I can't be 100% sure but it's almost as though he doesn't want to be touched on the right side of his face, near the collar. He seems fine when you are stroking him on his chest but not when you go near the right side of his face. But then again, extremely hard to make a diagnosis based on a video. Desexing won't help!! This behaviour is now learned and ingrained. Desexing won't change the feelings he has but it certainly won't hurt to desex for the purpose of stopping any unwanted pups. Is he aggressive in other situations or just when you pat him??
phatdex
yes, I had the same thoughts as Kelpie-i, he seemed quite happy, wagging his tail etc and then when you went to touch the side of his face he got upset and bit but didnt look too aggressive to me. I dunno, hard to tell from video.
