gemibabe
First of all I appoligise for not reading the whole thread.(made it to page 6) Everyone is asking questions relating to their dog and I'm getting lost with all the advice. I have started Shelby in obedience. It doesn't matter how hungry she is. She wont take the food for the first 10-15 mins... but eventually gets into the mood and takes the food. This only lasts for about 10-20mins then she wants nothing more to do with me. Tonight she frustrated the hell out of me. The seagulls where more interesting. And the other dogs/people. How do I work her? She does all the moves at home(heel, sit, sit-stay, heel-stand), this is why its so frustrating when we are at the park. She makes that god awful whinging noise at the other dogs and it eventuates into barking at the other dogs. I asked the trainer if she has high prey drive and she said yes, but we have to get her focused on me... how do I do this? She is very ignorant/stubborn at times(most of the time)and wont look up at me

K9: could be one of two things, stress limiting food drive or she is in prey drive.. How do I work her?She does all the moves at home(heel, sit, sit-stay, heel-stand), this is why its so frustrating when we are at the park. K9: I have something called the "Three Phase Philosophy" its the way I believe dogs should be trained. The learning phase in which the mechaniucs of the excercise are taught, the correction phase in which consequences occur if the dog chooses to ignore a known command & then the distraction phase.. If your dog see's the other dogs as too distracting you either dont have the right motivator or your dog is too easily distracted (socialisation issue) I asked the trainer if she has high prey drive and she said yes, but we have to get her focused on me... how do I do this? K9: by teaching her that the prey item is yours, & she will get satisfaction from that item onky through you.. She is very ignorant/stubborn at times(most of the time)and wont look up at me K9: one of the very first things I try & get with a dog is pack drive, its the sign that the relationship between dog & handler is good, even if the dog has only met me I can almost every time get pack drive within minutes, this alone makes the dog look at you... There is a little bit about pack drive on this page

MonElite
Im resurecting this thread as in the Socialisation and Neutralisation one Kavik and I started talkig about prey drive work, control, out of control etc. So to keep the subjects seperate.... I took Rex out last night to a new location, on my way there I met a lady with a dobie female so naturally we walked together. Rex ad Maya have not seen each other for months. I had Rexs kong and all the way there Maya was trying to get it out of my hand so I had a 1km long tu of war with a dobe We got to a little reserve, Maya on long lead as she has no recall wahtsoever, Rex off lead. I let him sniff and run around for a while and than produced the kong. I started playing a bit with him and Maya wanted to join in, but was restricted by the lead. Rex got himself into the "im obsessed" mode and I had him in a down stay looking at me with Maya jumping on him, across him, inviting him to play and being really silly. Im proud to say that he has done everything just as if she wasnt there! I guess Im getting there, if only we could do that in front of unknown dogs, male dogs barking.... oh well maybe one day.... Kavik re the loosening of control, I have noticed some undesireable things since intruducing prey drive training, its nothing major. 1. Rex started digging holes in my yard 2. He has killed 3 rats recently He has never done those things before, being 6yo atm. Im not worried, its just odd.

This creates conflict, possible outcome over possessiveness & aggression... K9: Not if you give that kong to other dogs.... M: I have noticed some undesireable things since intruducing prey drive training, its nothing major.M: 1. I dont think he is possesive/obsessed about it it enough. K9: Great news... mifht be that the program works after all.... of course it does , I said it many times before and given several examples, clips and "i love it" comments, did you miss those? :D K9: not enough satisfaction, possibly too much off leash time with other dogs... once a week for 45 minutes is too much? Considering he doesnt actually play with them? ....OK.... he can dig all he likes, as long as he pays attention to me outside the yard. Hmm when I think of it he stopped destroying fluffy toys in the house, so something for something. K9: I thought you said undesireable? if they were ring tail possums it would have been.... in fact I told him he is a good boy after he got each one of them
Steve K9Pro
M: but is there a chance that he became more interesed in the kong after she had it? I dont think he is possesive/obsessed about it it enough. K9: Yes a good chance, but also a good chance he will start to get possessive if he thinks the pack leader "may" give the prey item to another dog.... You want him thinking there are no other dogs, not that another dog may get the item... This is increasing the value (negatively) of the other dog (again). One step forward one step back... I try to provide programs that go only forward & fast.. M: once a week for 45 minutes is too much? K9: some would say once in a lifetime is too much. M: as long as he pays attention to me outside the yard. K9: & inside the yard, & any where you ask it...

One step forward one step back... it seems I do this in life in general, not only in dog training....... oh well nature of the beast I guess.......
