Especially with the hunting dogs, Vizslas, I'm hoping that I can cut this up and make desirable tug toys out of it. They are kind of interested in balls etc. but more interested in things that remind them of birds and wabbits. BTW I used to have not Wabbits but Pinny Gigs and the Vizslas pointed at them for ages before they decided they were "family". Actually I have heard that some boy wabbits can be a bit stroppy but am assuming yours aren't. I used to own wabbits many years ago but they got myxo and I don't ever want to risk that again. Don't think inside would be an option with husband and besides, we get mozzies inside. Anyway, so hopefully they will like a rabbit skin/fur tug toy. I let her have a look at him while I was holding him and she gave him a lick and walked off. He hasn't had enough contact to DO anything to her, and she's not afraid of Tess, who she just watches in a kind of lazy way. chezzyr Posted October 10, 2005 Share Posted October 10, 2005 I dont consider Rosie to have a high prey drive, but when we first got her she found (amongst all my clutter) an old purse made out of rabbit fur and carried it around the house like a prize. Last weekend I visited a garage sale a couple of doors down and came back with a Dream Catcher (made from leather, fur, feathers etc). Rosie grabbed the furry dangly bits as soon as I walked in the gate with it, so now its not in mint condition LOL Cant imagine what she would do with a fur jacket! Rabbit fur is pretty much "crap" it wrecks easily etc. Also this particular item is old, hence someone did wear it a lot. Obviously a woman, so its sprayed with perfume etc. Most likely was covered in moth balls to prevent moths eating it. It stinks most likely of other things other than the actual rabbit. Yes it might seem like a good idea to get it for a tug toys, but I feel that the "expiry" date of the actual skin and fur is gone. Dog will only be interested in fluff, but you can get other fluff for less money. I also have currently a leather coat with a collar made of fox fur, I can put the coat on the lounge and Rex doesnt even go to sniff it. He much preffered my brand new leather gloves. I also have a rabbit skin that I got from a road kill that still smells strongly like rabbit that I can also make strips from and plait in. You don't know until you try. sidoney Posted October 11, 2005 Author Share Posted October 11, 2005 (edited) The Kelpie is chasing the rag (her favourite currently is a tiny strip of swimsuit material that I cut off the end of her larger plaited tug toy when I was trimming it). She is also offering me behaviours in trying to get it. I am having some issues with triggering a prey instinct in the Vizslas - occasionally it will be there, but they seem to often not be interested, particularly the older one - they have both chased rabbits and are interested in the dried rabbit skin I have, so I'm hoping that a more rabbit like item will get them more interested. Steve K9Pro Posted October 11, 2005 Share Posted October 11, 2005 K9: use some of your tools at hand, tether older one just outide of the area you play, just outside = inches, not feet. Now play with the most keen dog you have, allowing it to capture the prey item just near the older dog. When the dog captures it, be all over it with praise & add a bit of rough play. One whole session with the older dog not getting a capture. Then repeat the next day, same thing but if you see the old dog traying hard, give it a capture, then swap the keen dog to the tie out & see how the old one goes..... Remember that, to make drive, a keen dog works for longer vefore gettig a capture, lesser dog gets more captures.... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
