fainty_girl
My dog came on heat last Saturday evening (24/09/05) - I only got her a few weeks ago and wasn't able to get her desexed straight away as she had kennel cough. My vet advised us to wait 4-5 weeks until she wasn't in heat anymore to have her desexed, due to the risks of blood loss. Up until yesterday, we have had no problems with dogs coming into our yard. My dog has also had no desire to leave our house at all. Yesterday this old looking black collie type dog hung around in our front yard on and off during the day. Later on in the evening my dog cried a little bit at us, but that it - she wasn't acting different. Our backyard is secure with over 6ft high fences all around it...but this morning my dad woke up to the sound of paws running around on our deck. He went out there and this black dog was out there! My dad scared away the dog and it bolted straight away from him and jumped a 6ft fence like it wasn't even there. My dad isn't sure how long they were out there together, so who knows if anything happened! Later on this morning the black dog came back to our front yard and peered through our front door, staring at my dog. They stared at each other for ages, and they were both wagged their tales. My dog didn't even bark at him! After this black dog's morning visit, my dog isn't acting any different (she cried a bit this morning, the same as last night). I really do not want her to be pregnant!!! Would this black dog even keep coming back to our house if they had done the deed earlier? What makes it worse is that its Sunday, and a long weekend - so what vet in Sydney would be open now? ;) What should I do? Should I get her desexed ASAP and just hope that she isn't pregnant? Also, should I call the owner of the black dog? He is wearing a collar and a name tag!
Nadia
The black dog will continue to hang around untill your girl is off season. He will continue to try and mate her until she is finished. I would suggest you have her desexed ASAP, if she is indeed pregnant and you do her very early there will be minimal risk and added expense. You can never presume that fences will deter dogs in the mood. She needs to be locked inside in crate or boarded at a reputable boarding kennel until she is finished her season. cowanbree
I would advise you to desex her in 3-4 weeks, even if she is pregnant it is still quite safe to do then. Obviously the best option is to keep her confined and not let her be mated but all is not lost. Even if she has been mated I would not desex her while she is in season, waiting a few weeks isn't going to hurt and is safer for her
greyhoundangel
I agree with Cowanbree And yes I would call the owner of the said dog and if they don't listen I would alert the rangers Mel xx
bowser
There would be a few vets open this long weekend, though they'd only be open for emergencies. There's a specialist centre at Strathfield, one on the North Shore, the Vet Specialist Centre/Animal Critical Care and Emergency Service in North Ryde, St George Animal Hospital in Carlton, etc... Is it possible to keep your dog inside? She would be safer that way, as males will do just about anything to get to a female in heat - they will even mate through holes in a fence! Unfortunately there's no way for you to know if she is pregnant or not at this stage. You will just have to wait a couple of weeks to get her desexed. and if she is pregnant it would result in termination of the foetuses.
Mana
Agree with all the above, but would say don't go and pay triple fees to see an emergency vet this weekend. She either is or isn't up the duff, and a couple of days won't hugely alter that situtation... I don't think there's a morning after pill for dogs, is there? (Could you see that the black dog was entire?)
kelpiecuddles
There is a morning after pill for dogs , I think if you got it first thing tomorrow it would be fine, but if you are getting her desexed in the next week or two any way it probably doesn't make much difference. pug rescue victoria
Contact the owner of the black dog and reccomend they get him desexed! Good luck with you girl, best to desex in a couple of weeks.
peibe
If the male dogs gets her pregnant on your property they are liable to pay any extra to get her desexed because she is pregnant. What ever you do do not let her have the litter.
Pup's mum
Nice in theory peibe BUT proving it's their dog that was the culprit could be interesting....they could argue "well if my dog got over the fence so could other dogs"......you would have to dna the dogs to know and I'm not sure the technology exists as yet.... Morning after pill is certainly an option and if you aren't planning to breed - a good option...but speying is the way to go....
Shandy
I would wait for her to come out of oestrous and then promptly have her spayed. As you know, the heat lasts about 3 weeks so from the looks of things you have another 22 days so I would make an appointment in say 25 days to have her desexed; BEFORE you do anything though, are you sure that the male dog was entire?? there is a possibility that even a neutered dog nearby can be drawn to her and some can even mate, with no end result so I would want to check to see if he still has his nuts just for peace of mind
Shandy
I wouldn't recommend any injections to abort the pups as they are known to cause pyometra (which is a womb filled with pus); best option for you is to wait until she comes out of heat; meanwhile for your peace of mind check to see if that Romeo does still have his nuts

I'm not sure if he's got nuts or not! I rang his owner this morning to let him know, and he said "ohhh that's where he's been!"...and he told me he'd collect him in a few minutes. I haven't seen Romeo since, so his owner must be keeping him in. My mum is going to contact our vet tomorrow to see what we should do...so I will keep you all posted. We will either get her desexed earlier, or find out if there are any other options. We definitely do not want more puppies...so you don't have to worry about that! Ari
Why not ring the owner back up and ask if the dog is entire? You might be freaking yourself out for no reason.
fainty_girl
I spoke to Romeo's owner, and he does have nuts! He's a 9 year old dog, but can still jump over his 9 ft fence at home! My dog is getting desexed tomorrow...so no more Romeo after that! He is actually a lovely dog though - it just would have been better if he visited under different circumstances! fainty_girl
My dog was desexed today - the lady at the Vet said that she wasn't pregnant, but i'm not sure if they could tell that early on? She was very happy to leave the vet, and she's now snuggled up on the couch having a sleep!
