OOo looks like HEAPS of fun - you can count me in for the next one for sure.

Worse case senenio - was there any dogs there mad keen to get the sheep or to bail them up against the fence in the paddock or anything? I brought Chili up with sheep, but one day she bailed up my pet lamb (he was frozen on the spot after being chased and Chili wouldn't let him move and was barking at him - didn't hurt him though) but since then I haven't trusted her. She's very full on and although she's a quick learner, I really don't know how she'd go. You'd need more than a rake to stop Chili getting to something she really wanted.

Indi would love a go too I think, she's too gentle to hurt the sheepies :)

She'd love to watch her Banjie work too.

You shouldn't have too much to worry about. David is pretty good. He had us introduce the dogs to the sheep on lead firstly before letting them off lead in the small pens. If you wanted you could have a muzzle on hand.

When Jyra was herding in the big paddock, she singled out one sheep and went chasing after it, so they sent Rosie out to help bring the sheep and Jyra back. They'll do their best make sure nothing bad happens.

I'm sure your dog would be fine. You need not worry because David will be able to tell if your dog will be ok. good example is Jyra. She was pretty full on, but mostly David said she had wolf instincts that were very strong. She looked like she was going eat the lot of them. She did nip a bit which they shouldn't do but not badly and in the big paddock Jyra tended to pick off one sheep and single it out......like a wolf. But David said Jyra had really great potential and she just needs to be well controlled. She sure loved it. Anyway, I say its worth a try.

Great photos Sky, I could almost imagine I was there! Lovely scenery.

Sparty, it would take me 2 hours and 40 minutes then, if I went via Ballarat...Don't know if I could handle getting up that early! I'll have to go find a map and see what a more direct route looks like, but I'm feeling tired already.

Now I know how most of you found out about the Herding Workshop

I don't go to Dogz Online very often but today I was thrilled to see your thoughts and some photos on the day.

(I'll be checking more often now.)

I then went down the list a little more and saw David's query.

This herding thing has been a meant-to-be for me.

I rescued my nieces kelpie/border as it kept jumping the fence. The next time she did it she was going to the pound and would have been put down.

I rang around a few places and got her entered in a Herding Instinct Test at St Salie????.

Tess did very well but I was told by the Judge that both Tess and I needed to get hold of a trainer.

In the meantime I re-homed Tess only to have to go back and bring her home as she was supposed to have killed a sheep. This I will never believe.

She never showed any agression with sheep at all. I even took her to a friends place to have a lesson and Tess was fine.

Sadly I had to give her up to the Geelong Animal Welfare as my "little black bitch" wouldn't have anything to do with her. Hubby was nearly tearing his hair out. He couldn't cope with the constant bickering between the two of them.

I miss Tess so much and pray that she found a home where some one could love and care for her the way she cared for me for that short time.

Now I have Gambit and he will be having a go. It's me that needs the training not him.

How do I go about training myself by myself.

Hi everyone,

Love all the photos....I'll need to get copies from you guys if you would permit. We did get some photos but not nearly enough and these are great for he website. Did anyone get any video footage????

I've been reading all the feedback and comments and I am so pleased that you and your pooches enjoyed yourselves so much. The quality of dogs was really good, and there was a lot to work with. I’m hoping we get to see more of your dogs harassing the sheep at Moorhome Park (or Moorholme Doggy Fun Park). Please remember we are there all weekend every weekend to guide, train, teach and more importantly have loads of fun. Don’t forget to bring something for the BBQ too.

Some of you mentioned how awkward you feel when out there with sheep, dog, rake and audience. Don’t worry, feeling awkward is something we all feel at the start and it’s all part of the fun. I still remember being bowled over by dog and sheep and landing in cow pads at the beginning of my learning curve and I still laugh about it today (actually it still happens). To help you out of the awkwardness you are welcome to observe me teach, train dogs…I learnt a lot this way. Tuppy is ready to commence her training and there may be some new pups coming up.

We have already commenced planning a follow up day or maybe whole weekend for you guys who want to go to the next level. There will be a herding guru and all round great guy there who has appeared on many TV programs. If you are interested please drop me a line on email [email protected]. I’ll be aiming to have ducks for this one.

For all who missed this last event - don’t worry, we’re getting ready for the next one now. So keep an eye out for a post to this forum soon. Or you could drop us a line on email as well so we can then keep you in the loop with a newsletter.

Whatever you do please stay in touch you are all wonderful people who love your doggy mates and if there is anything I can do to help just drop us a line.

Guest Tess32

Wow sounds fab.

It really was an excellent day David - both the practical sheep fun AND the theory.

And it's great how all breeds get an equal go and equal effort :D

:)

No need to get up that early ...I could meet you at Malmsbury or Woodend and from there it takes 1 hour, all freeway, no Melb traffic, easy peasy....

We could then meet Sparty around Keilor/Taylors Lakes (as long as she doesn't get lost :D ) then no one is going too far out of their way. Anyway its food for thought, we'll see what happens when the next herding day comes along. There's always solutions....

Just thought...another option is to all meet at Daylesford ??? kinda halfway. :)

Sky I thought it was really considerate of you to include "local scenery" shots :) I am sure those that werent there appreciated that.

Here I was thinking it was held near the airport LOL

You know I couldn't believe it was so beautiful near the airport. While herding we could see the planes come and go....we were right near the border of the back of the airport. YHet it was so beautiful. I am the sort of person who loves nature. I live the city rat race life in computers/I.T and if I don't see an ocean, a valley or a lake every three months I start to get a bit looney :D As I drove to the herding workshop I marvelled at the cows...not in square bare tree-less paddocks, but in sloping tree filled areas that went on forever with streams running through them. I saw cows chasing each other, having fun...'living'. Even at the property we were herding at the cows came through there in the middle of the day.

I have to admit that I'm a bit of a dag and I stopped the car, wound down the window and took those shots as I left the property....I couldn't help myself  I thought it might give some peopel a 'feeling' of what it was like too...especially people not from Melbourne or surrounds.

So is it always held at the same place? I am getting myself a bit confused now that I am reading posts about a boarding kennels or something :) It is a bit of a hike for us also but if the scenery is like that well thats not so bad. I wouldnt mind just having a look one time. David, can we come out for a sticky beak?

Yes its at the same place. Its run by a very nice lady and it is a boarding kennel place. But its huge and there is lots of space. As David has mentioned, he is working on making it a really cool place....a doggy fun park with a fully accredited Agility course there and all sorts of things in the near future.

It is right next to Tullamarine airport, though its easy to imagine you are in the middle of rural Victoria.

Yes, it is always held at the same place.

THe venue is Moorholme Park Pet Care Centre - Boarding establishment for 25 years. The kennels and house are sorruonded by acres and acres of pasture land which sorrounds Melbourne Airport.

You are most welcome to come out and have a sticky. Drop me a line on my email or [email protected]

See you soon then.

David.

Thanks Sky for your pictures.

All this thinking about rakes and dogs got me dreaming in my sleep! I dreamt that a dog was attacking me, and I was using a rake to try to get it off!! Dear goodness!!

I am wondering if there's anything I can do at home to work on herding. I guess it's a bit hard to herd without sheep though!!

I also agree with the others about feeling useless and uncertain of what to do at times. I still have a lot to learn!

The drive out to Tullamarine is fairly far for me too, and it takes longer when you get lost a couple of times too!
