spike's mum
I need some advice! I have woken up this morning to find that Penny, our 5 month old beagle, has managed to knock my pill packet off our bathroom shelf and devour the contents. Fortunately it contained only 4 active pills and 7 sugar pills, but nevertheless she has eaten the lot. Any advice on whether this is harmless or is likely to be a problem? Our vet does not open on Sundays, but am happy to take her elsewhere if it is likely to be an issue. I can't believe she's done it - my partner reckons she must have heard our conversations about desexing her next month Argh, it's really not funny - I am worried about her. Any advice
sidoney
How long ago? I don't know how harmful it might be, but I'd be getting her to vomit ASAP. I've induced vomiting with hydrogen pyroxide, available from a chemist. Edited September 11, 2005 by sidoney
Mooper
Even though your vet does not open on Sundays, I presume they have an after-hours number? I've called my vet in the middle of the night and he's given me (free) advice over the phone. I'd be giving this a go.
shekhina
I really don't know that it will have much of an effect on your dog, if any. It's only got hormones in them. Still, if you're worried you could always call another vet and ask them. Inducing vomitting with Hydrogen Peroxide? I haven't heard that one, I've always been told pour salt down their throats
sidoney
I looked up how to get a dog to vomit on the web after one of my dogs ate half a chocolate cake. That was something I could get the ingredients for easily. I remember reading somewhere not to give ipecac. The HP worked fine.
Dali-love
sometimes the chemist might know it
mita
This UK pet health site on poisoning, gives as an example, a dog eating the owner's contraceptive pills. Also provides guidelines for First Aid. http://www.pethealthcare.co.uk/dogs/welldo...a_poisoning.asp
shekhina
Yep, I looked it up too after you mentioned to use it I'm unlikely to have that stuff lying around the house anyways, so it'll be heaps of salt for me
Clyde
This has happened to me before, I rang the vets and they were more concerned about the foil packaging than the actual pills. Dog was fine
sidoney
Oh that is good news, that it's not a problem.
spike's mum
Thanks heaps for all the replies guys, she seems to be fine! We ended up calling the vet and they said it should be no problem, just to keep an eye on her. Guess I have learnt my lesson to keep those sort of things well out of reach. It just seems everytime you think you have found their physical limits for climbing and foraging, they raise the bar!! Gotta love em!! Cheers!! haven
I wouldn't be too concerned. I took a whole years worth when i was 3rs old and all the Dr did was shrug and say "at least she won't get pregnant"

Cordelia
Only start to worry if she starts behaving irrationally, crying for no reason or suddenly throws a coffee mug at your OH's head whilst screaming "I knew you thought I looked fat in that!"
