TigerJack
Just wanted to put in my 10 cents worth about Sutherland. I think it is only one instructor who is a problem, the rest of the club is OK. They do seem to be a bit fixated on check chain methods which doesn't appeal to everyone though. I have to say I haven't been along for over a year. For about half a year I went along three times a week as they have good 'help' classes on monday and wednesday nights. Did wonders for my boy. We were having trouble at flyball training with recalls. He just wanted to do laps of the oval. Went for three sessions a week and now he is great. I have to say I stuck with the one instructor on the weeknight sessions though. She was lovely. The other fellow (who I think might be the one everyone is talking about) is a twit in my opinion. He gave her a hard time about daring to go off and take a class on her own. Actually came across to us and ordered me to join his class or get off the grounds! Told him no thanks. I was told by the female instructore the next week that they had had a meeting and he had been told in no uncertain terms to leave her class alone. (This was the fellow who thought it OK to take my 2nd dog out of my hands and proceed to yank her around by the check chain yelling at her to heel. Bruised the skin on her neck) It was only this one fellow who was awful to deal with, everyone else seemed quite nice. The whole club did seem a bit attached to check chain methods though. Jo PS: Wagsalot - where are you located. If you were going to Sutherland you must be in my area. I do flyball with St George. Contact me if you want to know more. Contact me if you want to know more. Im in Shire. Im really interested in getting riley into flyball as he's a kelpie x so has the energy to burn. I put it off as i was worried he wouldnt be very good - he tends to get "selective hearing" sometimes when he's out and doesnt do what he's told! Hes never done anything like it before though, so i didnt really know where to start. sorry for the thread hijack
joannakathleen
Thanks everyone for your advice - I think I'll go along and watch a class or two at Sutherland before I think about putting my dog there! In the meantime I'm going to ring Sylvania this afternoon and try to get Madison (my gorgeous little chihuahua x poodle) into a puppy course there. Brockstar
We wanted to go to Sylvania when Bronte was little, but had to wait for the next class - and by then she would've been 16 weeks old. So, we went to Jannali Vet at 12 weeks, and I've only got good things to say about Kylie there. We then moved on to Hanrob for the basics (I needed to learn too!) and Steve was wonderful with her. We had a full on weekly lesson for about 6 months, and now we just go for a refresher every now and then....
wagsalot
does hanrob just do basic obeidence? or anything more involved?
animalsluvbree
I've done private training with Steve Austin and he is great - i'd like to do more with him. I would also like to the saturday classes with him too - but i work. Steve will do private lessons that focus on obedience for those you want to do trialling. Sutherland does agility with instructors on a wednesday night if you are interested and one of the instructors there he does sheep herding and fly ball so he could help you. I want to get my lil sheltie into herding she always tries to round up the other dogs! :D Just to clarify - at sutho there is no rule saying that you have to wear a check chain - if any instructor tells you you "have to" just tell that no you don't and you'd prefer to wear the collar you have - the only rule about collars/leads is that they shouldn't wear car harnesses. I think the instructor everyone is talking about has left (or i haven't seen him for months). Its good to see what everyone opinion is of the different clubs and instructors! Buster's Mum
I also found Steve to be great. My dog Billy has never been socialised and started barking non stop as soon as we arrived . Steve gave him two tugs on the lead and we never heard another peep out of him. By the end of the class Steve had his German Shepherd walk right next to Billy and he didn't even flinch. As it would be hard to train the two dogs (and myself) together I will keep taking Billy to Steve and Buster will go to Sutherland.
MonElite
The instructor that everyone is talking about had some followers that looked up to him, and that was my point. If I was in a class and my dog wouldnt be behaving they would say - go to XXX he is really good and will fix your dog. Yeah fix my dog.......... right.......... Dont forget that there is a club n Peakhurst that trains on Saturdays afternoons, its not that far form the shire to get to.
