cloud
Old dog had a tumour removed about a month ago, stitches out, and has finished antiobitics but the middle of the wound is open and healing very slowly. I dress the wound with a pad and wrap it and he wears an elizabethan collar but still manages to rub it with his collar unless its wrapped up. I would like feedback please on Medi Honey on open wounds like this. Spoke to 3 different chemists about this, first one thought it could irritate the wound, second said she thought it would speed healing and use it straight away and third said use Solugel for a few weeks and then switch to Medi honey. I bought it but haven't been game to put it on. It says on the tube for malignant wounds (but thats on humans) Just wondered if anyone else has used it on wounds on dogs. Vet is happy with wound and says it will be very slow healing, I'm just hoping I can help it along I know its great on horse wounds and for ulcers on people but would like feedback about it on dogs please. espinay2
I know many hospitals have tried and been impressed by Medi Honey, particularly for hard to treat and resistant infections such as Golden Staph. I would say give it a go.

cloud
Booboo, just checked the tube and doesn't say manuka honey at all! Rang health shop and they say the manuka honey one cannot harm the wound in any way and its quite a bit cheaper than the one I got!

enroche
Hi there One of our girls had a large abscess removed and was stitched up after 2 weeks stitches came out (as the healing had been slow) and the next day it was gaping open another stitch went in and another week of antibiotics and when the stitch came out it fell opent again and it was about 3inches long so not a pretty sight. Went back to our vet who said she could A - Re do the op in the hope it would heal or B use Medihoney not pretty to look at but she felt this would be the better option which we agreed with and we used the little tube it is higher grade than the general manuka I think you'll find there are different grades in the honeys that are for different treatments from memory and that's why it's better for wounds. I have also used the other Manuka honey for sore throats and things and it is great but the Medi Honey is fantastic on wounds she healed in no time. (PS she has a partial hare lip and is unusually slow to heal from surgery so this wasn't a botch job on the vets part it's just that Buffy's a bit different!) All the best with your baby. bowser
I know specialist surgeons who use Manuka honey all the time on wounds to assist with healing. Bandages are removed, the wound is cleaned, then smeared with honey and re-wrapped. It helps to beat post operative infections. I'd double check with your vet first, but can't see how it would cause any harm ;)
Aphra
I've used Manuka honey on one of my horses who did some very nasty damage to his leg, used the honey, then one of those stick on dressings ... it made a huge difference in how fast it started to heal from that point, compared with the previous, conventional dressings. I've used Medihoney on dogs, and on myself when I had a second-degree burn on my arm. As far as I know, Medihoney is simply honey which has been tested for a standard amount of the active constituent in medicinal honey, there's nothing added to it. wagalot
yep i thing the staff is wonderful I am a wildlife carer and use on wounds all the time, some very bad cases too, such as a possum with its tail half skined, had too stich the skin back where it had been ribbed and then put medi honey all over the hole tail and cover it, had to clean the wound, put honey on, and re dress the wound 2 times a day. with in a few weeks the dressing could come off and the wound was starting to heel.. the little possum loved to eat the honey as well dear little thing. I also get exma and put on my self and works wonders great stuff Sam....
cloud
Thanks everyone. Started using it yesterday. Comes in different grades, got the strongest one. Will take a photo tomorrow and then every week so I can keep progress for myself. Looks like a gruesome piece of raw meat now so hopefully it will start to look better soon. wagalot
just a little note...... when using on wounds on animals i have found the skin can change colour, pinks, orange, redish, purpleish and back to pink again....... this is normal, so if you thing the wound is looking a funny colour as it heels, don't be to worryed ........ hope it works cheers Sam....... catzatsea
How did you go Cloud???? I am currently using the wound care 18+ on my boy, he had an op on friday to take a pin out of his leg and decided to rip out his 2 stitches overnight. Vet is happy with me dressing the wound myself (currently 3x daily) though he had never used Manuka Honey. After 24 hours though the wound is healing very nicely!!!! cloud
Hi, Wound is going well, vet is pleased and uses Manuka honey too. I didn't know that until I told him we had started using it. The one I am using is the strongest one Active UMF20+ Manuka honey. $25.35 from Health shop. The ones that aren't as strong are cheaper but I thought I'd go for the one with the most go in it. Will take photos of the progress. I put plenty on, fill the hole up and put it on the pad before bandaging. Its a lot easier to peel the pad off too, just lifts off. Good luck with yours
