DREMEN
Unfortunately I will be starting a new job soon (good for me) but the problem is that for 10 weeks I will be attending training in the city which means our 6 month beagle will be left alone for 9 hours during the day.  What do you guys and girls do to prevent boredom in these situations? Thanks Ben Edited July 14, 2005 by DREMEN
katetk
I bought my boy a cat  not for everyone though. Kongs are great filled with treats - if you freeze them then it will take longer for her to get the treats out. Sandpits/pools if she is into that type of thing. Lots of toys to keep her busy etc. Although i do suspect that both my Boys (dog and cat) spend the day snoozing.
Em & Taco
I got Taco a friend. They have heaps of toys to play with and each other to amuse themselves with. The do however find sponges fun to rip up all over the yard. I reckon but, they sleep 80% of the day!!!!! Just have a variety of toys arounf for her and ask the neighbour to keep an eye on her the first couple of days!!!
Scales of Justice
We give our dogs and puppies plastic drink bottles - the tough plastic ones that have 2 or 3 litre juices in (once they are empty of course) (minus the top and plastic handle piece which comes on some of them). We pull the label off and give only the plastic bottle and these provide quite a long time of amusement - far better than any purchased doggy toys. The plastic is very stiff and it is hard for dogs to get their mouths around them - when they finally do manage to flatten the bottles they still play with them anyway. Marrow bones are also a good time waster for lonely dogs. I have stuffed Kongs in the past but clever dogs work them out in a short time and extract the contents. White Shepherd mom
Can you find a doggy-daycare to take him/her to for a couple of days a week? This will also be good for socialisation. It shouldn't cost too much for just 10 weeks. Do you know anyone who could pop in for a short while each day for some play, a cuddle or maybe a walk? Do you know anyone who's at home or has another pup who you could drop your pup off to every morning? How about a professional dog minder? If the above fail, you could contact "Don't Fret Pet" or someone similar who could look after your pup at their house during the day. All the above will also benefit you as your pup should be happy and tired by the end of the day and not needing you to walk it after your long day. Kongs are great but after the food's been eaten, then what? Same with other toys - he/she can only play alone for so long. As your problem is only short-term (ie 10 weeks), getting another pet is not necessarily the solution unless you were planning to do so anyway, but then you could have 2 bored pups! Good luck

Netti
I know the feeling, I used to worry about one of my pups being left alone during the day. Maybe you know someone who stays at home that you could take him to for some of the days, or some responsible person to come to your place and spend some time with him and/or take him for a walk. I used to get up early and take my pup for a walk, give him a feed and hoped that that made him really tired so he would sleep most of the time. As others have said plenty of toys and bones to chew. All the best in your new job.

ish
I recently discovered that my kids, especially the baby puppy, find carrots very entertaining! They throw them around and play with them, and eventually chew them up! Cheap too! I use soaked dry dog food in my kongs - if you let it expand a bit in water straight from the kettle, add something yummy like a little bit of cheese or meat and then fill the kong up you can either freeze it, let the bikkies dry out again overnight to last longer or just give it to them as soon as its cool enough. DREMEN
How do you freeze them? Doesn't the water drain out the hole?
ish
I usually do 4 at a time and put them in an icecream container in the freezer, not much comes out though.
KitKat
Stick some peanut butter over the little hole that will keep it 'capped' long enough for everything inside it to freeze
