KitKat
Natural Balance I'm just curious as to if anyone else has used this food or heard of it even? I did a search the other day and got some info but i'm curious to see if anyone has used/seen it...If it is what it says it is then it could be pretty good stuff...but rather then buy 15kgs and discover it's average...etc etc
Miranda
I have never heard of it, but I went to the link you provided and they do not have a list of ingredients or a guaranteed chemical analysis. I would want to see both before I bought this food. A good dry food will have meat as the first ingredient and preferably there should be two meat ingredients in the first four. Do you know where I can see a list of ingredients? Edited June 28, 2005 by Miranda

Miranda
I checked out the ingredients and they didn't impress me, they have rice as the first ingredient and it also includes beef tallow (a VERY cheap source of fat) so I don't think I'd bother buying it. poodlefan
Fish oils go off quickly when exposed to heat or light. Not sure I'd want to have them in included in dry dog food.
Innana
KitKat,are you referring to Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance or is this a different Natural Balance? I ask because for a time I had Misha on the former Natural Balance and the ingredients listed in the posts here don't seem to be the same. Here is a link for the Natural Balance products that are sold in the States.I find it surprising that it isn't the same in Australia but maybe it's an entirely different brand? http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/products/dogfood.html Misha had a great coat and firm, small poos on the Natural Balance from the link above but the biscuits were very hard, meaning she had to work to chew them up.We've since gone on to something else-Natural Balance was a transition food from Eukanuba as I began to learn more about dog food. I still feed my cats Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance for cats as they digest it very well and are so satisfied with it,they don't want anything else. KitKat
Innana - it does appear to be a different 'brand' from the US one...on the Aussie site (listed earlier) it seems as if this one has been developed within Aus.... From the site.. In the development of Natural BalanceTM, we sought the expertise of Dr. Nick Costa, a leading university Professor of Biochemistry and Nutrition and one of Australia's expert animal nutritionists. Under his direction we carefully selected a range of 100% natural and balanced formulations designed to tempt even the fussiest eater. The result was Natural BalanceTM. larry
I have never heard of it, but I went to the link you provided and they do not have a list of ingredients or a guaranteed chemical analysis. I would want to see both before I bought this food. A good dry food will have meat as the first ingredient and preferably there should be two meat ingredients in the first four. Do you know where I can see a list of ingredients? hi miranda, from my understanding dry pet food can either be made with a) using a meat slurry and grains, and then it is extruded into biscuits, or b) with meat meal and grains and then extruded into biscuits. (extruding means cooking with steam) (a meat slurry is when meat is ground up and mixed with water, this would have to be kept at a cool temp to keep bacteria growth low...) If you make a dog food using a meat slurry then meat will be the number one ingredient, as raw meat is about 70-80% water, however meat meal had has most of the water removed, so the total weight of the meat meal will be about one quarter of the weight of raw meat. Meat meal is a more stable ingredient than a raw meat slurry, i don't think that one is better, they are just different manufacturing methods.... What is important is where the meat comes from...... I have been told that all the lamb in the natural balance dog food comes from an export abbatoir that produces lamb for the supermarkets here in WA, so the quality should be good.... I have also been told that they only use natural preservatives in their dry dog food, which should be good.... Also it is made in Western Australia, and NOT imported like hills or eukanuba, and I would think that buying local product that is fresher is a better choice than imported food ? The natural balance inc. food in the usa must be a different product from the WA Natural Balance but they do have similar names... larry
hi kitkat, no worries..... It really impresses me how many more people over time care more about what their dogs eat....I think for a lot of us here the pets are part of their family, and they want the best for them... I think our dogs are very lucky.... they have a very good life in our home, and are taken care of with a lot of love, and they give a lot of love back in return..... they make our house very 'homey' Edited July 1, 2005 by larry
