X-Ray question

Recommended Posts

Hello all new user here , I have 2 jack Russell's 8 years old & in the last few days one has injured his back right leg , I took him to the Vet  and they did all the checks they could on the day  and Now I am booked in for X-Rays  with hopes of getting a definitive answer to the problem , My question is cost  and should I get a 2nd opinion ?  X-ray of his back right leg cost $550 is this typical ? and If he need surgery  for cranial cruciate ligament of his right back leg which the vet thinks it may be  that would be another $5500.00 , Now as a pensioner thats a big number  , any advice would be appreciated .

It’s also quite possible that it’s not cruciate ligaments.  Some smaller breeds are very prone to avulsion fractures of the hind legs.  This is where the ligaments pull flakes of bone off at the insertion points.

For xrays that price is good .
As to a second opinion suggest if you have no confidence in your vet yes .
I will always advocate for a second opinion but we are lucky that when we pick our chosen vet clinic we do so based on what they can offer as a complete package & skill of the staff .

In your case if its a second opinion then it would be with a vet whois a specialist in ortho issues or  regularly does the procdeure otherwise your just wasting money .

It may not require surgery often a conservative approach can work but you wont know till an xray .
If nothing shows up then consider a doggy chiro /bowen person some wont treat till after x rays but those golden hands & water exercise can do alot & management

go to another vet or at least phone another vet to get prices, many time the leg can be improved with rest and Meloxycam so ask your vet when you have a consult

He has made some improvement in the last few days , He still holds it of the ground most of the time but I watch him and he does put pressure down on it and even stood on his both hind legs

Thanks for the reply , I will ask the vet about Meloxycam

he gets his X-rays tomorrow morning  so all my fingers are crossed , his improvement has give me hope , he shows no signs of pain and even sits down on the bad leg  and sleeps on that side to , he puts pressure on it and even stood up on both back legs  that can only be a good sign I hope .

Thanks for letting me know thats the kind of price I should expect , I have been with this clinic for 8 years  the only concern is recently they moved to a new facility & so far all the people working there now I have never seen before .
