LadeWhanau
I recently bought a purebred pup with the Main Register, but I haven't received the papers yet due to several issues. Initially, I had to fill out the transfer to new owner application on the back of the Main Register because Dogs Victoria sent the papers to the original owner/breeder in his name by mistake. Once this was completed and sent off, Dogs Victoria returned the Limited Register papers instead of the Main Register papers. When I called Dogs Victoria to inquire, they informed me that, as I am not a member, the papers are automatically downgraded to the Limited Register. Has this happened to anyone else? How can they downgrade the papers when the breeder already registered the pup on the Main Register?
Mairead
So you paid a main register price for the pup? And were clear about wanting a main register pup? Do you have a receipt which shows you paid for main register? Which activities were you hoping to do with the pup? Because you can do a lot of activities with a limited register. Someone with Victorian experience will have more answers for you.
Mairead
Just looked it up on Dogs Victoria website. The breeder is the first owner and chooses Main or Limited register for each pup when they register them. To change register Dogs Victoria requires written authorisation from the breeder. If you didn't say you wanted to compete in conformation shows (and you would have to become a Dogs Victoria member to do that) there would be no reason for the breeder to choose a Main Register puppy for you. The issue is, after we paid n transferred ownership of pup (on mains register) the papers Dogs Victoria sent back in my name were the limited papers n not the mains. When i called dogs vic asking where my mains are, they claimed they were downgraded to the limited because i was not a member with them?
LadeWhanau
Dogs Victoria basically overrode the breeder by downgrading the mains to limited after breeder registered pup on mains n ownership was transferred, all due to “apparently “ me not being a member with them. I dont understand how they can do that/downgrade.
Mairead
Do you have any intention of becoming a member of Dogs Victoria?
Rebanne
I've never had an owner send in papers to be transferred to their name until after they were a member of their state body. I have never heard of any one doing this so have never heard of the papers being down graded. And it seems very weird to me. After all if you were going to breed your dog the papers don't matter unless you yourself are registered, then there is a code of ethics etc to be followed. It wasn't a mistake that the breeder got the papers in their name. That's how it happens in Victoria. Breeder get the papers, then gives them to the new owner, then new owners gets papers into their name. Was the paper blue or orange?

The papers i sent back in to be transferred into my name, were the mains (blue) but the papers that came back were the limited/orange papers and when i called to inquire why i received limited instead of mains, the lady over the phone said it is due to me not being a member of Dogs Victoria n they automatically get downgraded. After i calmed my farm, i asked the lady will i get the mains if i become a member to which she said i will, so now ive signed up to be a member n awaiting whats next which is hopefully the mains in the mail. Both myself and the breeder are new to all this, so i guess we’re gonna be scratching our heads a lot along this journey lol. Thanks for your response Rebanne, i appreciate it.
Rebanne
You're welcome @LadeWhanau You have to be a member for over 12 months before you can breed registered pups and will need to sit a test and get a prefix. Of course your pup will be too young for breeding anyway until that time has passed. There are also restrictions on what age you can breed a female depending on her breed. And I think they have to have the relevant health/DNA tests, that was coming in as I was getting out Mind you I did all the tests I could including non mandatory ones. Always nice to know what is in your dogs bloodlines.
