Loving my Oldies
Has anyone used/had experience with Plaque Off? My latest foster is a 4yo Pekingese girl who is in such good condition. She is a surrender due to dire financial situation - very sad. Her owner has been extremely diligent in her care of this little dog and her teeth are beautiful. The owner said she has always used Plaque Off and came with bottles already made up and two new bottles. Obviously, I am using this, but am curious as to whether or not anyone has experience of it. As nearly all of the dogs I have had over the years have been rescues or come from pounds, I don't really have experience of good teeth . My own two little Pekes have about three teeth between them and I have had a couple of dogs who, when they came to me, had to have all their remaining teeth removed. If Angel (new dog) is any example, this is a product worth using. Before I start to sing its praises, however, I would like some more information. I will be talking to Angel's vet who happens to be one of the vets used by the rescue group I foster for, but they are on holidays at the moment. TIA. Angel is still learning house rules so the paper in the background is there to soak up you know what.
Papillon Kisses
Some people say it helps. I didn’t think it did anything. I like to look for products that carry the VOHC seal. https://vohc.org/accepted-products/ Gold standard care is frequent toothbrushing using an enzymatic dog friendly toothpaste and getting dentals at the frequency recommended by the vet. Rebanne
I've never found anything that worked including the seaweed meal like Plaque Off. Bones have been the biggest helper. Phoebe is now 10 1/2, never had a dental and not a fan of chewing but has chicken necks for breakfast most mornings. Teeth are a little stained but last vet check in October there was no need for a dental. Rose at 7 3/4 had a dental before she came to me 12 months ago. I never got the full story about her mouth but she did have some stitches. Her teeth are lovely. Chicken necks seem to do it for both. Rose will chew/eat wings.
Mairead
I've only used bones as the main teeth cleaning device. Raw beef marrow bones, cut into pieces and first given straight after a meal. Taken away when the softer honeycomb ends had been eaten and only the harder shafts remained. This cleaned most teeth except the base of the canines. For those I used a tool suggested by my (greyhound) vet - the edge of a stainless steel teaspoon to chip off the plaque. I don't know what the equivalent would be for toy dogs. Raw lamb cutlet bone? Edited December 26, 2024 by Mairead
Boronia
@Loving my Oldies it's quite beneficial health-wise as it contains the powdered Ascophyllum Nodosum seaweed, have a search on-line for the most economical option here's a option https://greenpet.com.au/product/simply-seaweed-dental-powder/
Rebanne
the other thing to consider is some supplements can upset the thyroid. I don't know about Pekes but Greyhounds can be quite thyroid "complicated". I did ask my vet about it but she wasn't sure about it. My vet did try plaque off on her older Poodle cross and it didn't help at all and Polly still had to be put under for a dental.
Boronia
Also a no-no if your dog is prone to struvite crystals

My dog has chicken necks or drumsticks every night, as does my cat. My cat is almost 15. No plaque. No tartar. My dog is almost 8. No plaque. No tartar. This is an interesting read - https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/raw-food-diet-for-dogs/#5-barf-vs-prey-model-diets-pros-and-cons The article is wordy, but covers how even BARF and premium brands can lead to periodontal disease.
