I don't think it is a good move, if the answer to deficits is to scrap the whole thing. Doesn't bode well for the keeping of domestic animals. Not when the focus is constantly on discrediting the practice, and promotion of its successes inevitably cops the same treatment.

and they have banned the dogs from being exported so they can't come here. If nothing else that is so unfair to people that will have thousands of dollars tied up in their dogs. People will lose their livelihoods. Dogs will lose their lives. It would be like banning Border Collies because people don't like them having a job.

Tighten up the rules and regulations but ban - no. Horse racing will be next.

Winston Peters is a nutter.  Rehoming 2900 racing greyhounds in 20 momths is going to be a fiasco.  I'm mildly against greyhound racing, but can't see that this has been thought through.  The racing association and dog rescue organizations aren't on the same page.  Shelters are overloaded, especially for large dogs.

Ban the people from participation if they won't do the right thing, or cover up for those who don't. Use the laws in place, and demonstrate/highlight better out comes for those who DO things well. Organisms and organizations evolve and thrive when they can demonstrate value. Poor behavior and out comes are Subjective, not objective.

Unfortunately, ANKC has been promoting the opposing belief for too long and these instances of banning practices out right instead of demonstrating how they can be improved on  is the only  out come available under that assumption.

Its contrary to reality. The objective is not faulty. Its not where the value is. If it were, we are all headed the same way.

Need to ban clergy for the welfare of children.

Ban men for the welfare of women and children.

strangely that is not seen as will get votes.

sending animals to death is somehow seen as a vote enhance?  go figure

I remember talking to a politician who was in the crowd at the rally about Greyhound racing in Sydney. When I mentioned if [Mike Baird] wants to ban it because some people do the wrong thing he needs to ban the Catholic church too. And Parliament she said.

I read some where there was triple that number of thoroughbreds put down on the track. Also read that as many more people own dogs as pets rather then horses then that is why it resonates with them. Of course no thought is given to the number of working bred dogs who fail to work and are shot up in the hills.

@sandgrubberI no longer have contacts but are there any showbred greys in NZ? There has only ever been a handful in the past.

When NSW tried the same thing there was quite a few showbred greys in the state and no distinction made.

Yes there are still show bred there & i certainly hope the NZKC fights hard for the show people because yes that NSW saga was not nice for the Greyhound show folk who got targeted & had to deal with the unknown fear for that period because no one uses there brains.

Good move, but what happens to all the racing/breeding dogs now ? :(

I gather most will be PTS  because people think thats a better choice & apparently find that thought process easier to live with aslong as they cant run in circles.

Funny part is for many many many years the biggest source of blood donors to save dogs lives are also Greyhounds so people dont have an issue when there dog needs blood transfusion to have it from a Grey but want the industry banned but dont really care what the future is for the dogs .

Im gathering lure coursing or Sprintdog isnt an option with the NZKC dog sport events
