Queanbeyan Pound Forced to Euthanise All Dogs After Canine Parvovirus Outbreak

I hope the council is completely transparent in providing information on how many dogs were symptomatic, how many dogs were titre-tested to check their immunity and how many were euthanised for convenience, cost-saving or “just in case”. Although I accept that difficult decisions sometimes need to be made, I find it difficult to believe that none of the 21 dogs had protection from previous vaccination.

Parvac vaccine costs around $20 per dose.

Should be cheaper.  In the US (Florida and California, anyway), you can buy it at the feed store.  10 years ago it was $5 per dose, and a lot cheaper if you bought in bulk.

In the 1990's, when I worked at our local pound, twice we had parvo dogs come in. We did NOT put down any dogs bar the parvo ones.

I went up to our local pound and there was a dead dog (I could see it through the viewing holes) in with 4 other dogs.  The dog died from parvo and none of the other dogs got it.  Fortunately that pound is no longer operating.

That is terrible ! Poor dog/s .

Yes they were distressed.  Pound was only manned for a short period morning and afternoon.  Fortunately I had the number for the ranger and they were there quickly to remove the poor dog.
