Rayjen Posted October 28, 2023 Share Posted October 28, 2023 We have just had a very sad dog experience. I am wondering how unusual this story is? Our 4 year old pure bred Kelpie has had seizures for about 2 years. About every 3 months and he would come around after a couple of minutes but each episode was very scary and we thought we had lost him a couple of times. This time he had a seizure in the house, but lost control of his bowels which had never happened before. We are also not sure whether a snake bite could have been involved this time. After several minutes he stood up but did not slowly recover to be himself. He did not seem to know where he was and didn't come to us. The back door was open and he came outside but he wanted to get away from us, running in the opposite direction, as if he was spooked by us. For about 20 minutes 2 of us were trying to corral/direct the dog to safety, but he kept running away. Eventually he laid down with another seizure and we got he car and drove to the vet, but he was gone. What we observed was a huge burst of energy, almost manic energy and cunning, he found a way out of a gate that we thought was secure. He did not seem to know us, or where he was, and his instinct was to get away from people. 8 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

~Anne~ Posted October 30, 2023 Share Posted October 30, 2023 The activity after a seizure is called post-ictal. We had a pug who ran manic after his seizures. If he didn’t normally experience this with his seizures, and he subsequently died from his seizure, I’d be more inclined to think of poisoning or a bite. tdierikx Posted October 30, 2023 Share Posted October 30, 2023 Unfortunately you don't have to be very close to where government agents have dropped 1080 to control rabbits or foxes or other "pest" animals... ravens and other birds have been known to pick up the baits and drop them quite some distance from the original drop site. The symptoms you describe sound very much like 1080 poisoning. Whatever caused the behaviour, I am very sorry for your loss... it's never easy to lose a beloved pet under scary circumstances.
