(was thinking parvo etc) It's a matter of common sense and weighing up risks. IMO, the risk of behaviour issues later on as a result of inadequate socialisation early on is GREATER than the risk of the pup picking up diseases, provided, of course, common sense about WHERE you socialise the pup is applied. If your shopping centre is not an area where many unknown dogs go, then I'd suggest there's small chance your pup would pick up a disease. Same deal with other "non - free range dog" areas you might think to take your pup. One thing I would suggest, though, is keep your pup away 7 days clear of each vaccination. As I understand it, the pup's immune system can go down as a result of the vaccination, before it comes back up again. The pup is more vulnerable in that 7 day window. NaturallyWild Posted December 13, 2005 Share Posted December 13, 2005 I've compiled a list of everything so far Puppy Socialisation: Places/People/Situations in general •People - different race, age, size, conditions (weird walking, drunk, handstands, dancing, busking, etc) and in costumes (santa, clown, masks, big hats, beards, sunglasses, crutches, bald, coats, gothics) •Babies - in prams, cot, holding, on floor •Handled – All over by family and different people (Leads, being tethered , being restrained, having ears cleaned, having eyes cleaned, every part of body, having mouth checked, being picked up, pinch/scruff all over to make up for being chewed on by littermates) •Veterinarians – also do mock vet stuff like muzzling, bandaging, being carried on a strecher, checks etc. •Shops – Hardware, nursery, shopping centre, markets with lots of people milling around •Hospital - rehab centre (people in wheelchairs/walking frames those) •Sporting event - footy and tennis •Schools – start and end of day •Gym •Police and fire stations •Airport/helicopter land and take off! •Wreckers yard/Car factory •Building sites/renovations •Parks/reserves •Bbqs/fires - cooking •Adventure park - hearing all the noises, screams eg Luna Park •Main road •Animals - Horses or stables, cats, chickens, cows, chickens/other birds, cats, rabbits, fuzzy dogs, bull-breeds and dogs of all shapes and sizes, alpacas, sheep, other livestock, fish, reptiles, bugs •Fireworks •Gunshot •Speedway or dirt bike competition. Steve K9Pro Posted December 14, 2005 Share Posted December 14, 2005 K9: whilst I do like to subject a pup to as many new things as I can, (then I neutralise the pup) & make sure I teach the puppy how to deal with new things along the way.. You wont cover everything a dog will encouter in its life, but what you can do is teach the dog how to react, which in my programs is to seek advice from the leader. Many dogs flight at new things when they become frightened, I dont like dogs doing that, so I teach them to check in with me. He also got scared of the council guy dressed up in funny suit for spraying weeds. He was funny at the surf beach scared of the crashing waves. People wearing animal suits. Josh loves these and trys to find their face to lick them. Balloons Beach (surf and bay) He doesn;'t like getting into a paddle pool, I think because of the slippery surface. A crawling baby of all things, which is something I did not think to expose her to when she was little.
