SAS in dogs is common in some breeds, and it varies in severity - your dog is unlucky to have a severe case. In most breeds, it's likely to be a polygenetic or recessive inheritence, which means that it can pop up out of the blue. Your breeder may not necessarily have had any dogs with this before.
