Collars & leads for puppies

Hi,

 

My friend is getting his kelpie puppy on 16th May & I’m helping to get info & advice.

 

What age should he start having the pup wear a collar & are there types that are better & safer for pups?

 

Similar with leash?  As the pup grows he’s going to be getting out & about more to get used to the community. After his final vaccination of course. When is a good time to start with a leash?  Obviously we don’t want to hurt puppy by using one too early or one that isn’t suitable for a pup. So suggestions on timing & types of leashes would be great.

Very lightweight collar straight away.

 

Put lead on puppy a few times a day and just let him run around with it on to get used to it - fully supervised of course to ensure no tangling up in anything, including his legs.

Collar/lead training ASAP I always like pairing this with a nice bone of some sort ..so leash on = chicken wing or similar

And please don't wait till after the final vacc . especially if that's 16 weeks to start some gradual exposure to the outside world .. hopefully it will be a bit more normal world by then  ….. but lots of safe ways to expose a puppy to the noises, sights and sounds of the world .. especially important for breeds that are typically a bit OTT and stimulated by moving objects and by sounds.   Car trips. being carried around shops etc. , Bunnings trolley trips, meet the vet for well puppy visits.  play dates with nice vaccinated dogs owned by friends, family, in safe yards.

We are expecting our next pack addition next Sunday and it will already have exposure to a collar and harness and i will add a leash to that immediately by having it wear a light leash around the house and in the expen all day  (fully supervised when pup has gear on). I find it really useful because my dogs don’t get all stupidly excited if i  produce a leash to go out - I don’t want them jacked up before we go out. I also toilet on leash for a long time so i can teach evacuate on cue so having them on a leash is no big deal to them. When i finally take the leash off in the house, i make sure to switch it up so they don’t get conditioned that a leash means something fun and exciting.

 

I’ll also be socialising immediately - trips to Bunnings, the local supermarket, obstacle courses at home, exposure to barking neighborhood dogs when they eat (recored the dogs in your local area), i’ll also be taking private lessons with my trainer who will expose my pup to more dogs by working alongside them (we don’t often allow meet and greets with other people or dogs - i want low value). Escalators, travelators, lifts, stairs etc  i have two dogs already and will be using them by having them place while i walk pup by with no contact.

 

Leerburg has all Michael Ellis’ video content on demand these days and it’s awesome. His puppy dvd on demand is excellent for foundation training. Both of my existing dogs were raised on his marker system. The first things this pup will learn is its name, a behaviour interrupter, crate acceptance, leash wearing - all with food games. Then once it’s settled in i’ll charge the markers.

We lead train our litter from 6 weeks ,no such thing as too young .Puppies are very compliant at a young age .
Our pups in the litter also start pottering up n down the road from 6 weeks .

I think you can used Martingale collars, you can training for you dog since child and that collar can use when walking. That collar is safe for dog because it are not going to choke your dog when you need to control them or redirect them.
