Dilemma for Rusty
Hi there, We are in-laws of a little Spoodle called Rusty. He is 4 months old and is living with our in-laws, our sister in law adopted Rusty for her two Autistic kids (who are teenagers at 15 and 18) as she thought our oldest nephew (non verbal) might have a companion. Unfortunately as they live upstairs (Mum and two kids live upstairs as when Mum and former husband separated Mum built on top of her parents house) they are all essentially in charge of Rusty. No no one in the House has ever had a pet; and they are essentially not coping (training, toilet etc) and not giving Rusty the love he needs, kids included. My husband and I are happy to take him, and costs involved but we have a massive dilemma- we live in an apartment which is west facing in Sydney- so, quite cool right now- but sooo hot in Summer and we worry that if we take Rusty- when we are not home during the day he will be too hot. It’s finally cool now in May but has been hot from December through to April. What is the best option for Rusty- can we make it cool outside for him so that he can have a lovely life- of course with constant love and walks everyday except for 4 days a week during business hours that we are not home? (7-4) We would much prefer him in a loving home regardless- just don’t want to hinder him from being adopted by a beautiful family with a big backyard and kids who will love him? Any advice is appreciated. love Katie, Jim and Rusty
Rebanne
So the in-laws are happy to give him up to either yourselves or a reputable rescue? How big is your yard? You could put up a shade sail and provide him with a paddling pool, make sure he is kept clipped with a shortish coat. But.... he will still need to be walked daily, you would have to commit to getting up 1/2 hr earlier on your work days and also another walk in the cool of the evening. I would imagine he would be an active boy being a spaniel x poodle. What a lucky little dog Rusty is to have someone who cares for him and wants to see things done right. Good luck
cannibalgoldfish
4 months old? I hope that's a typo. Because 4 months old means he just basically just left his mum.

Loving my Oldies
Find a reputable rescue group (contact Denise at PAWS for starters) and rehome him. An apartment is not suitable for a young active dog unless taken out several times a day. You’ll have bugger all chance of toilet training him if you are gone from 7-4pm. No life for a dog.

Yes that is our gut feeling- we have a large balcony and he is already toilet trained but we know in our hearts that he needs a big backyard and someone around all the time. 2
JulesP
Have you/your SIL contacted whoever Rusty was purchased from and let them know that it is not working out?

Please do this BEFORE you hand him on to someone else.
juice
He’s probably from a pet shop or backyard breeder , they are hardly going to care now they have their money . Contact Powerlegs, or Denise at Paws . Your hours are too long to leave a pup in an apartment all day . He will bake in summer unless you leave the aircon on for him too .
