Recommendations Orthopaedic Surgeon

Recommended Posts

As the title says, I am looking for recommendations for an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sydney.

Some of you will have followed my story about Sooty  https://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/271361-a-new-girl-at-myrtle-street-sooty/

When she first came to me, she would hold up and tuck in her right front leg.  I was able to straighten it at first and it would stay down for a little while and then she would just tuck it up again.  After a while, she started to give little yips and cries when I did this, so obviously a vet visit was called for.  Sooty belongs to a rescue group, so I just can’t up and take her to the vet easily in that I have to get permission, etc etc.   Eventually, Sooty was diagnosed with a Sub-luxated elbow and only surgery can fix it.  Her leg is never down now and, of course, I don’t try to straighten it at all because of the pain it causes.

The rescue groups wants to get a couple more opinions so I thought I’d put it out here to see if someone has had a million gold stars experience with an Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Dr Eugene Buffa did a fantastic job on our Speedy (who needed both hind legs done).

We went back to him to get a very unusual bone tumour removed from Winnie's mouth. I'd go back to him in a heartbeat if needed.

Sooty definitely needs an operation; the surgeon is not sure which way it will go until the operation actually starts.  She never puts her leg down now and it is very upsetting tp see her struggling to get around    .

Depending on the extent of the operation, it will cost between $4,000-$6,000.

As this needs to be done prior to any discussion of cataract surgery, it is breaking my heart to realise that she will probably never have any sight back, because that would be an additional $5,500    .

That is a huge amount for Vet Fees,  did the rescue tell you Sootys age,  maybe 2 long operations would be very difficult for her to recover from,

Poor little Sooty has had such a hard life,  it's so unfair for her having to go thru all of this

Would the Vet give any discount because Sooty is a rescue dog?

How about crowdfunding  I think it's called,   everyone gives a little and pays off  the Vet bill

So if anyone has any ideas on how to raise the money, I’d be grateful for input.

:( It's a lot to come up with all at once isn't it.

I was lucky enough to be able to dedicate a whole page on the website to each surgery dog. With updates for the donors etc. If you can't do that, it won't hurt if the rescue can do an album on their FB page. Or use their instagram account.

But Pandi-girl is right, crowdfunding seems to be the way to go now if you can get your link shared all over the place. Otherwise, if they just kind of sit there you don't get much traction.

We ran a raffle once and raised over $4k, it was haaaard work and took a lot of organising but worth it. :)  If you have the time to source great prizes that suit all kinds of people (not just dog people) you'll find the tickets sell very easily, and many by word of mouth because supporters like to sell books of them to friends and workmates.

Amazing, Powerlegs.  I no longer have the contacts, but when I worked I was able to get goodies from all sorts of places for the raffles I organised for Burwood Pound and PAWS.  Long time ago, though.

The rescue people are organising a GoFundMe page but since I’ve been begging them to start one for a couple of months now, I am losing heart.

You can start your own crowdfunding campaign and post it here :) then set it up to have the charity withdraw the donations so they don't have to go via your bank account. That's all I know though, you'd need to read the fine print. I'm a bit crap with that side of things and normally 'delegate' LOL.

The RSPCA at Yagoona have a vet clinic where members of the public can take their animals for consultation.

A few of my neighbours take their dogs there because it's cheaper.

Maybe you could ring them & get a quote for the operations.  They also have an eye clinic there but I think that is run by private specialists.
