Stage 3 Renal Failure

Bindi has just been diagnosed with Stage 3 Renal Failure...all this since her last blood test on 1st November which didn't show up any problem.  So it has happened quite quickly. The vet could not offer me any info on just how much time we may have left, but has put her on the Hills diet both wet & dry & she will go on medication but had to order that in.  Any one know of any alternative to Hills or anything else I should know?  She has always loved an egg on her dinner, sardines & Yogurt but not sure if she can still have these things.  I asked the vet, but her answer was a little inconclusive.

@sheena  so very sorry to read this.   That's a pretty sudden onset.  Does it indicate maybe something more sinister going on?  Not that it would necessarily change management.

I'm sorry I don't have anything useful - my Kirra was still in early stages of slowly progressing  kidney decline when she developed peripheral gland lymphoma, so the kidneys became irrelevant.

Saw this article which might have some useful information.   And I thought one of the other companies (RC maybe) had a kidney diet range.

How old is BIndi now?

Bindi has just turned 11& still has heaps of energy.  I took her to the vet because she has started to pee in her sleep & at first we were pretty confident that it was a treatable old lady thing, until she did the tests

Thanks Crazeydoglady for posting that.  Interesting that she can still have an egg & sardines & the vet said that her 1/2 turkey neck a day should be fine.  she also said to introduce the new food gradually over a week.

Hi Sheena

My BRT has kidney dysplasia which is very similar to progressive kidney disease.  Bing the Renal  Specialist at SASH saved our dog.  2 years on he is in good health thanks to Bing & her advice.

Bing recommended Royal Canin Renal kibble (not renal select) with only 10% of his diet allowed to be protein. No eggs because of the phosphate in the yolk.

Chewy has been doing well for 2 years on RC kibble in morning.  Night is a layer of RC kibble with some rice &  veggies topped with a small amount of store bought roast chicken.  It's the protein you have to cut down on.  If they won't eat the kibble just break up some liver treats on top.

I'm sure Bing could do a telephone consult .  She always replies to my emails .Sash phone no. is 02 9889 0289.

Most dogs don't like the Hills kibble.  You can buy the Renal kibble from Budget Pet online.

If I can be of any help pls let me know.

Protein makes the kidneys work harder & that's why the protein is cut back .

The Specialist also recommended no raw food in case of infection or upset stomach etc.

I don't give sardines to this dog very often as I've noticed he doesn't feel like eating the next morning.  When he does get them I give the Brunswick ones with no added salt in spring water.

It was an anti-inflammatory Previcox that made our dog sick .  That's when we found out what was wrong with him.

I just use those packets of frozen veggies from the supermarket & steam them in the microwave.  I find that easier as I have 2 Giant Schnauzers as well as the BRT.

Bindi was on Carprofen (anti-inflammatory) which gave her a bleeding stomach ulcer.  I found this out when I changed Vets.  She had her last blood test for that on 1st November & everything was fine & all back to normal.  So it has come up really quickly.  The vet said that the dose she was on with the AI would not have caused it, but higher doses can.  At the moment she is as bright as a button & I am going to be positive & order her the biggest bag of Royal Canine plus some cans.  She is missing not getting her daily egg, sardines or yogurt :(

I am not a great fan of kibble  being the main meal but I have done as the Specialist recommended & his creatine. blood pressure & protein levels haven't changed  over the past 18 months & the Specialist is really happy with him.

They can have egg white & maybe google the yoghurt that has the lowest protein content.  Greek yoghurt has the highest protein.  Maybe cottage cheese?

Small amounts are ok as long as it's counted in as part of the allowed 10% of protein .

They do get sick of eating the same kibble .  I give a small treat & put some on the kibble to get him eating.

Apparently some human kidney patients don't feel like eating 1st thing in the morning.  Chewy is a bit like this & he usually has his breakfast after 11am.

Because he's not getting much protein he also has a small bowl of renal kibble around 10pm in order to maintain his weight.

You can also get RC pouches of renal wet food from Budget.

All Natural Vet in Sydney (in Russell Lea) are very good holistic vets.  I have seen Barbara Fougere over the years & have found their Chinese herbs excellent.

I know they do a Chinese herb supplement for kidney disease.  They are also really good with diet advice.  They do phone consults & will send the recommended herbs to you  by mail.

Hope this helps.

My old boy Coco had kidney failure which came on very quickly. The kidney diet is very restrictive - Coco was allowed only the renal dry food or the vet-prescribed home made diet. No raw food. The home made diet is very bland and he really didn't like it, but that's all he could have (until he stopped eating, at which point I gave him anything to get him to eat).

Coco had been on various NSAID medications for spinal issues, and this medication was thought to have caused (or at least contributed to) his sudden kidney failure. But it's a quality of life issue - he needed medication to relieve his pain. So despite the outcome, I don't regret giving him the pain medications because they allowed him to enjoy his time free of pain.

Good luck with your girl. I hope the kidney diet helps and you have a long time with her yet.

Good that her distressing symptoms seem to be diminishing, sheena.  I'd be considering the holistic consult too.  The one I see gave Kirra a (Chinese) herbal arthritis pain relief powder which would be gentle on her kidneys.  It seemed to be effective (although my regular vet - who tolerates my eccentricities in using some alternative therapies - did point out that there were some kidney sparing pain meds available now).  Kirra seemed to do well on the herbal stuff, so I kept going with that.

She hasn't drunk much to day that I have noticed, probably because we have had visitors, & her breath stank, so I put a teaspoon of milk in a bowl of water & she drank the lot.  Hope I have done the right thing,

What can you do.  As long as she had fluids.  Better to have the fluids than not.  Particularly in the very hot weather we are experiencing at the moment.

The specialist told us always have plenty of fresh water available.  I have noticed my dog with the kidney issue won't drink the water unless he has seen me fill the bowl & it is straight from the tap.  Whether that's a personal fetish or something to do with the kidney issue I don't know.
