Transporting 9 Week Old Puppy - JetPets/Dogtainers

Hello everyone,

We are adding a puppy to our family in a few weeks and are trying to work out the best way to get her to us...she's in Goulburn and we're in Brisbane.

The choices are a long 2 day drive home with her (in addition to the 2 days driving down - we have small kids so couldn't do it all in one day), or transporting her with JetPets or Dogtainers. My preference would be to fly her as 2 days driving with a new puppy and small children doesn't sound like a lot of fun for anyone ;-)

I would love to hear the experience of others who have flown their new puppies to them. I'm worried about it being a traumatic experience for a new little puppy, and whether it will affect her willingness to be put in a crate in the future (we would like to have her crate trained).

Many thanks!!

I picked up a ten week old from a direct flight of about 4 hours travel all up, I think the trip was pretty much forgotten with the excitement of all that attention on arrival.

Think it also depends as I know some breeders won't send toy breeds before 12 weeks but that would be an answer for more experienced puppy people.

It helps if the breeder can do some practice crating beforehand .. but my Border Collies coped fine as 10 week olds .. my older dog flew as a puppy from Perth WA to Hobart ..including a 2 hour stopover and change of plane in Melbourne.   Arrived happy as a clam, has always been happy in a crate. .. still chooses to sleep in an airline crate beside my bed .. no door on it for the last 5 years, and door was always open for a couple of years before that.   He almost3 10 now.

My younger BC girl left her home in the early morning for a 3 hour car trip to the airport in Adelaide, change of plane and delay in Melbourne .. arrived at 10.20 pm in Hobart,  30 minute car trip home .. quick bit of on leash toileting and a bit of play and some food at home, then slept happily in an airline crate beside my bed all night .. with one toilet outing during the night.   She still runs happily to that crate for bedtime, but is also happy in a selection of other crates.

They both travelled through Jetpets, on Virgin.  SO it can be done with no problems at all.

(Not sure of the breed, but be aware that airlines have restrictions on carrying some breeds.  Someone like Jetpets would be able to help with those sort of questions.)

My new 4 year old westie flew Port Macquarie to Adelaide via Sydney on Mother's Day on Virgin.  I was nervous about the Sydney plane change and stopover but Virgin were great - no problems - and she was already off the plane and waiting for us when we picked her up from Adelaide Airport at 3.05 pm (we watched her plane from Sydney land from the runway viewing area on the dot of 2.55pm and then drove around to collect her).    She was calmly sitting in her crate at the pet pick up point with the Virgin staff all fussing over her.

I then let her out of her crate (on a lead) for a wee at Adelaide Airport and then tethered her on the back seat of the car, gave her a small liver treat and she was absolutely fine for the bit over an hour trip home in the car.  The Virgin staff were terrific and clearly took great care of her.   Would use Virgin again.

I imagine most dogs and journeys are fine, but I do know three dogs who have had traumatic flights or flights that could be traumatic for some. The first two examples below there were weather issues so it was a very rough and long journey.

Puppy 1: crate trained beforehand, was not traumatised, LOVES his crates.

Puppy 2: crate trained beforehand, was traumatised, developed a fear of the crate, owners were able to retrain love of the crate in 3 days.

Puppy 3: unknown training history, traumatised, owners unable to crate train, they are looking at getting a different type to see if that helps.

So I would definitely see if the breeder will crate train beforehand and ideally also use the Sound Proof Puppy Training app to positively condition the puppy to plane sounds (take off, landing and internal).

BTW, puppies 2 & 3 were later diagnosed with anxiety disorders. Perhaps dogs not predisposed to anxiety may have been fine.
