PossumCorner
Yeah Grizabella, I know, I know. One of my most favourite books here is Innocent Killers (Hugo and Jane van Lawick-Goodall) - her studies and photography of them just marvellous. I was lucky enough to work for 2-3 years in Kenya/Tanzania/Nigeria and spent every moment I could in the bush it was living the dream in every sense. Unfortunately the downside is that it's given me a horror of zoos, I realise it is irrational and I know all the plusses and logic and arguments and benefits: but if I go to a zoo I have to leave in a mess, and I can't even much look at zoo photography which is my loss but how it is. Hunting Dogs are everything beautiful, flowing action. Hyaenas are a touch ugly, something like an imaginary cross between a small bear and one of the gone-in-the-hocks badly bred German Shepherds. They are just grotesquely ungainly but super strong. They can bite an adult person's arm off at the shoulder. No saving graces in appearance or habits. Ren that's a lovely shot of the pups. Ahhh oh no! Sorry! Oh god I was so mistaken I always thought those were hyenas! Edited June 29, 2018 by Scrappi&Monty

persephone
How wonderful LOVE the African wild dogs ... (also have grown to admire and see the beauty in Hyaenas...more closely related to meerkats than dogs ;) )
grizabella
How did Silkens slip my mind? I have no doubt I'm someday, somehow have one of those little beauties in my life! There's something so charmingly pixie-like about them.

Diva
There were a couple of otterhounds being shown here, but that goes back a couple of decades. None now. Even in the UK they are an endangered breed with critically low numbers Edited June 30, 2018 by Diva

PossumCorner
They are lovely - For a couple of years I worked in Switzerland, and thought they were just a short-haired version of the Bernese. Hadn't realised they were a separate breed.

I was in Spain for a few months, and the amount of galgos and podencos (and Ibizan hounds) in desperate need was heartbreaking. We actually had a beautiful galgo found roaming on the grounds of the wildlife sanctuary I was at, presumed abandoned (the amount of dogs being dumped is devastating). She was captured and fostered by one of our primate carers before finding a new home in Germany. Prima galgo was just the most beautiful dog, sweet and sensitive. I can tell you, I was wishing I had the unlimited funds to take a couple of Spanish hounds home with me. m-j
She looks like a real sweetie, Im glad she found a home. The way they are treated is so barbaric.
persephone
@grizabella what beautiful portraits of such a sweet- looking dog who now will never again be neglected & confused & unwanted . That second photo seems to show her thinking 'oh My ..just WHAT is all this wonderfulness ? ' ( though it was more likely a pant-hoot ! LOL )
