I'd definitely recommend looking at her photos if you're interested in primates; she gave a great insight into Taronga's chimps and gorillas. tdierikx Posted July 8, 2018 Share Posted July 8, 2018 It was because of myopixia that I finally got off my butt and changed careers to be working with animals... pay is crap, but satisfaction level is incredible... I'm finally doing something that is hard work, but so rewarding on so many levels, and I love it to bits! Myo so loved to hear my tales of cuddling emus, cleaning facial abscesses on possums, smooching kangaroos, and being attacked by recalcitrant cockatoos... lol! My fave memory of her was near the end when I managed to pull a few strings at one of the zoos to get her some personal time with their little monkeys... usually the public get around 15 mins, but she got to spend an entire hour being mobbed by a large group of common marmosets... the look of pure joy on her face was something I'll always remember... and I have photos... grizabella Posted October 29, 2018 Author Share Posted October 29, 2018 I'm trying not to worry about Hannah... there's no reason why it shouldn't all be okay, but after Soona's death in childbirth I don't think I'll be able to completely shake that fear from my mind. grizabella Posted October 29, 2018 Author Share Posted October 29, 2018 Hannah is 24. Usually, a female would have had at least one infant by that age, but she is not old either. It was devastating to lose Soona that way. It's one of those situations where there really is nothing that can be done; it happens very quickly, and the process of separating chimpanzees in order for one to be anaesthetised and taken out for treatment is not often straightforward. Soona passed peacefully with her friend Zombi by her side, which was some comfort. One of the males, Gombe, tended to the infant for the first hour before Zombi took over. Baby Boon only survived a couple of weeks, tragically, but his short life touched many hearts. The staff (and enrichment volunteers) are brilliant- they love throwing the chimps big celebrations almost as much as the chimps enjoy them! 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think for most people who get to know chimps closely come to see them as family.
