kayla1
I've been reading about dalmatians requiring a diet that's low in purines to avoid kidney stones. I understand that a good diet, water, and frequent toileting opportunities are important. Just wondering what dalmatian owners here feed for a low purine dalmatian diet? Thanks. The Spotted Devil
Artemis dry food, raw egg from my chooks, chicken frames is the usual diet. The occasional turkey wing. Training treats include tinned salmon (not tuna or sardines), cheese, 4 legs chicken varieties. Never ever liver or anchovy or anything high purines. kayla1
Great thanks. I feed most of those things already so good to know I'm on the right track with diet.
The Spotted Devil
It's really important to check the ingredients of the dry food you are feeding - some have anchovies, brewers yeast etc all of which are high in purines.
juice
I used to keep a list of high Purin foods . i only found out about stone forming when my boy got a blockage on a bank holiday and had to go to emergency vet .
kayla1
Ok, I have Artemis fresh mix which I think is ok looking at the ingredients, though it's the one for small breeds so tiny pieces. I've also got the Osopure turkey and garbanzo beans, but I'm not sure if the chickpeas would make it too high in purines. He was fed Pal/Pedigree in his previous home. Good idea, thanks juice, I'll do a list and stick it on the fridge. I'm new to dalmatian feeding and want to avoid issues if possible.
The Spotted Devil
Yes Fresh Mix is what I use. I’ve done so much research on this. Never had a problem in 11.5 years. I also add a spoon of yoghurt to taste plus water to ensure Zig gets plenty of water. I keep a very close eye on his peeing habits too!
kayla1
Yes, I've been watching his peeing habits! Do you add the water to the artemis just before you feed it?
The Spotted Devil
Yes exactly right! I don’t think soaked dry food is very palatable haha so I add a little water, stir it through and feed. I also add omega 3 oils, 4-cyte for joint health and probiotics for gut health. Standard for all my dogs.
