Adopting a rescue

Hi , we have had two bullterriers for eight years . Adorabulls who we rescued . Teddy is 10, we are his third home and he is a big softy . Peanut ,the cutest sweet pea  passed away on Wednesday. We were her forth home she was also 10. We are so devestated as is Teddy and the cat. Our family feels so incomplete without her. 

I have looked at the rescue sites and found two red and white bullies in need ,one in qld one in nsw . We are in Vic . Last time we lost a dog she was the only one and it took us a year to get these two .This time feels different. I don’t feel I’m rushing into it but maybe avoiding the heartache with distraction .

Teddy is miserable and we are capable of reintegrating mistreated neglected bullies. 

Should I continue my quest for these darling dogs ?

I have always taken  in a new dog when I lost one - there are so many in need and I always think my dogs who have gone would approve of me offering a home to another dog in need.

Thanks Perry’s Mum for putting your reply so well. x a friend asked us the question ‘What would Peanut want?’. She always wanted us to be happy and was eternally grateful we got her out of a hell hole.

If you feel you are ready for one of these dogs, and that it will help both you and Teddy, then go for it  You know Teddy best, and there's no one true way to heal your own heartache. Go with what you feel is right.

Everyone grieves differently and there is no set time limit before getting another dog.  You're not replacing the dog you lost, you're helping to heal the broken hearts.

Teddy probably feels a bit lost without Peanut, I think seeking another bully to love as soon as you can is a wonderful idea!

I see that all the bullies currently listed at Victorian Bull Terrier Rescue need to be only dogs but I'm just wondering if you have contacted them to see if they have a bitch (opposite sexes are usually best with bull breeds) that would suit you? 

Never hurts to ask! If they don't have anything then go right ahead and apply for an interstate one!

It is so hard to lose a much loved part of the family and this sorrow can be really compounded by seeing the grieving of another pet.  Condolences to you all and we DOLers will look forward to seeing photos of your new family members when that time comes.

A lot of the bullies in rescue are not good with other dogs , byb at its worst . When I lost my girl I looked for ages but then decided to just get a breeers older dog looking for a home . I have had 2 now and although they take a while to adjust to living out of a kennel and in a home their temp was always great , as they should be . My previous one came from Victoria and I see they are advertising on the breed pages atm for homes for a couple of older dogs .

Agree with above post.  I see a lot of troubled bully’s come through our rescue that have moderate to severe socialisation issues.  The question of whether these issues can be trained out is impossible to answer, with every case being different.

 

If you are looking for a mature Bull Terrier to join your family then speaking with breeders is a good idea.  We occasionally forever home juvenile and adult dogs that have either a particular trait that we aren’t comfortable bringing into the breeding program or have been returned to us for various reasons.

 

I find Bully beeeders are generally quite well connected and will be able to point you in the right direction.  Another way of getting connected is to contact your most local Bull Terrier Club.

Thanks , I have seen the matures bully  adverts on dol . Some thought we were crazy to take on Teddy and Peanut. Their temperaments were fully questionable and took a lot of time and patience and love to turn into happy confident and steady dogs . Many would have surrendered them. We have learnt so much and want to give a broken bully a good chance.
