Doglover77
I have a Rotti x French mastiff who has always had a protruding lump on the centre-top of his head. I believe it's called the "occiput". Recently it appears much bigger. He's 3. has anyone had this happen? MY thought would be perhaps he has muscle/fat wasting away from his head/face although it's not noticeable and the rest of him is chunky. No jaw symptoms. he has had 2 seizures in 4 months and been to specialists and had full bloods but haven't yet had MRI/lumbar puncture done so not sure if it's related with this bump growth
RuralPug
What opinion has has your vet mentioned about the lump? Has his head been x-rayed to check for skull fractures?
Diva
The occiput shouldn’t grow at that age so I would be worried there was something else going on. There are conditions that affect the muscles of the head, but I suppose it could also be some kind of tumour-definitely something to raise with your vet. Doglover77
Thanks heaps. My boy had a muscle biopsy taken and the pathology report came back as MMM. He's on steroids in addition to his seizure meds...the 2 issues not reportedly connected. Early days but remaining hopeful. It seems we caught it early before the Jaw muscles were affected, luckily 2
Diva
He is lucky he had an attentive owner who noticed so early. Good luck with it.
Doglover77
Thanks so much. With my last boy I noticed Cushing at an early stage where the vet thought I was crazy for presenting....but he was 9. This boy is 3 but I'll fight with all I have to do all I can. I am worried he's not on a high enough dose of prednisone tho...30mg morning and 30mg night for a 56kg dog. From reading up he should be on 2mg/kg not 1mg/kg but I'll follow vet advice for now and watch closely
dogbesotted
so glad that you are so observant.. I hear you about the vet thinking you are crazy.. i had a dog who was hypothyroid.. he was a gigantic walking list of symptoms. and his previous vet had been treating an eye problem with pred which was making everything worse. once i lured vet out to take bloods for testing and the lad was started on meds all returned to almost normal. Hope all goes spectacularly well with your boy.
