The RSPCA has appealed for public help to save a dog seen running across a southern Queensland highway with its mouth taped shut. Truckies have reported seeing the skinny-looking dog, believed to be a German shepherd-cross, running across the Cunningham Highway. It was last seen near a helipad near Aratula, southwest of Brisbane, on Monday morning. The RSPCA has appealed for anyone who has seen the dog to get in contact as quickly as possible, fearing it could die of dehydration. "If its mouth is taped it won't be able to eat, and drinking would also be very, very difficult," RSPCA Queensland Inspector Laurie Stageman said. "If it's not caught soon, it will be probably dehydrate and that's a horrible way to die." Anyone who has any information about the dog is urged to call the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL

mmmm..

why not use a tracking dog?

Bit difficult because there is no scented item for dog to track. If you took it to the spot that the dog was last sighted it could pick up and follow the scent of a person or wild animal instead of the dog. People with tracking dogs please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Perse & RuralPug; Maybe they are worried the loose dog is dog aggressive and could attack the tracking dog. But then again the poor thing has it's snout taped shut. But maybe another dog could scare the loose dog? I suppose humans would/could too.

The poor thing, does anyone know if there has been any news? Has it been found? :(

Most tracking, trailing  and search dogs are trained to locate humans and things carrying human scent, either by using a scent object belonging to the person, looking for the most recent human scent or searching an area for human scent (or cadaver scent). They aren't going to know that this time you want to find the dog when they have previously been taught to ignore other animals while working. Maybe as RuralPug says if there was a scent article for that dog, but otherwise they will not know what you want.

Heat also destroys scent, so tracking in these conditions after so long would be very problematic. They could search, bearing in mind they need to know they are searching for a dog, but if the dog did have its mouth taped shut and that tape has not been removed, it is long dead anyway. Probably any dog that likes hunting out dead things could find it but for no purpose.

I hope it was a hoax, or a muzzle which allowed panting and drinking.

Apparently still alive

Hard to believe after how hot the weekend was. At least it is a bit cooler now. If it is alive I wonder if it managed to stretch or break the tape so it can pant and drink...

Poor thing must be exhausted and terrified if it's still out there :(

An update from Brisbane Times PM;

Search called off for muzzled dog spotted by truckies

The desperate search for a dog that had been muzzled with tape in south east Queensland has been called off after a 12 day effort by the RSPCA and volunteers.

Truck drivers first spotted the dog that had tape around its nose and mouth on January 9 as it ran across the Cunningham Highway, at Aratula south west of Brisbane, describing it as a skinny-looking canine believed to a German shepherd-cross.

A number of truck drivers had called into the RSPCA letting them know about the muzzled dog.

Concerned for the dog's welfare and ability to eat, drink and breath properly the RSPCA coordinated a search and rescue effort using baiting traps and the last confirmed sighting was on January 17, when the tape appeared to have moved down the dog's muzzle.

Inspector Laurie Stageman praised the efforts of the volunteers and said the search wouldn't have been possible without their help.

The RSPCA said they believed the dog either managed to remove the tape or it had passed away.
