Hip Dysplasia Treatments In Sydney

Hi all, first time poster here, not sure if this is in the right place.

I'm looking for reccomended clinics in Sydney (preferably West) to treat my dogs hip dysplasia. He's a 10 month German Shepherd with a very bulky build. He's already been diagnosed with a concern case of hip dysplasia :(

Regular vet was giving him Zydax injections which initially worked extremely well. He is due for his next shot in a month or so. However one day his condition seemed to get a lot worse. Hes in considerably more pain now and becoming reluctant to go for walks or get up at times unless I encourage him. Not sure why the sudden detriment. I'm now seeking further treatment. I've read a lot about holistic methods like accupuncture or laser therapy and decided I want to give them a try since they are cheap anyway. However I would be open to other options. I read a few threads on here about gold bead implants, which is like a permanent form of accupuncture which a lot of people swear has worked for bad cases. However I'm having trouble even finding anyone in Sydney who knows about this, so how would I go about getting it done?

Would appreciate any resources you guys have. Thanks!

You really need to have a specialist opinion for the best long term outcome for your pup. If he is this bad at 10 months and he has 10-12 more years of life left you might be better looking at long term options ( DPO or THR)

ARH in Homebush or SASH in the north

Welcome :)

The very first step is to get Xrays done by a specialist .

THEN ..when you and the specialist look at the Xrays - then , when you can see what's happening inside your puppy now , you can use that information to start a certain course of treatment.

please don't rush and try things until someone expert in the field takes appropriate Xrays and discusses them with you .

I am sorry your pup is so sore :(

Are his breeders helping you with this problem ?

Keep us posted :)

I highly recommend seeing Dr Jaime Jackson of Primal Paws. I doubt she uses gold beads, but she would put together an evidence-based treatment plan which may include physical therapy exercises, stretches and massage that you can do with your dog yourself. :)

Here's her website: http://www.primalpaws.com/

She posts on DOL as Jumabaar.

I second this :)

Thanks guys!!!

I work a lot with dogs with HD. Manual therapies and therapeutic exercise are vital to their management to have and awesome life. I would be happy to look at the X-rays- my email is [email protected]

It is also important to remember that just because we know a dog has HD that we dont rule out other issues occurring at the same time, particularly if there has been a sudden change in the symptoms.

I gather the dog has been x rayed to confirm there is an issue??

Yes X-rays have been done and HD has been confirmed by the vet.

They recommended I see a HD specialist but they have not been able to refer me to any that are conveniently located for me. That is a problem because my puppy is quite large (hence the issue with his hips) and transporting him up to 30-40km is not a simple task, unless I hire or borrow a ute. Besides, even though I have pet insurance, I'm not sure they cover non-essential surgeries and even so paying for the cost outright of a surgical procedure is well beyond my financial means right now.

Since I purchased him from an unregistered breeder, I have not bothered to chase it up with him.

How large is the dog ? Won't he fit in the front seat /back seat of a car? Transporting a dog with painful hips in the back of a ute isn't ideal ...do you have friends /family with a stationwagon or something?

How long is it since the original Xrays were done ? there may be something else happened since then to make him so sore , poor lad. D O L has some terrific professionals, like Jumabaar , glad you came here !

Now ..you say he's large - have a look here ..and see which fits :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a bull breed here that was diagnosed with HD when he was very young.
From the get go, we have used a chiro to help keep him aligned, he has regular injections (cartrophen or carprofen - something like that)..

Last year (he was 4 yeas old at the time) we finally did stem cell therapy, after updated x-rays showed he had HD and ED, with his right hip being quite severely affected)

His cells were harvested and two weeks later he was injected with his own cells in all joints.
It was something like a one in one hundred chance but he had a 'flare up' from the injections in two joints, so had to be treated with laser and a heap of pain relief.

He came good about week later and has never looked back - he continues to improve now. I no longer see in limp around after a run at the park. He can run and jump like all healthy dogs but I do limit the whole jumping thing because it is better to be safe than sorry.
We still use the chiro about every 8 weeks (instead of every 2-4 weeks), just to keep him well aligned (he is a bull breed and plays hard).

He also goes to Hydrotherapy, where he walks on an underwater treadmill for about 20 minutes now (it started out being 5 minutes and has built up) - this isn't cheap but totally worth it, as his muscle tone has improved so much.

I don't know any one in Sydney that could help with this but our specialist vet, would know colleagues that could help. I would be happy to ask next time we are over for a check up, if you like.

It's not cheap but honestly, the best thing we have done and I wish I had done it sooner - because the results we've seen are so amazing.

Thanks so much! I would love if you could find some names of people who could help in Sydney.

Also can you give me a timeline of how long the treatment took and roughly how much it cost? I will start working again soon and as soon as I get on my feet again I'll do whatever it takes to get my dog to maximum health.

Sorry to hijack this post, though hoping for some other options along similar lines. I have a young dog who's been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. She's joined my crew of working dogs (originally from the pound like all my dogs)  but noticeably sore even when she hasn't worked. She's currently on daily pain relief so ideally needs a  more permanent solution.  She's too old (around 12 to 18 month) for the simpler hip resection so looking at a full hip replacement on her right hip. I'm near Canberra and there is only one vet surgery in Canberra who does it (with a vet from Sydney) but the estimate they gave my vet was $7000 per hip.

Anyone had any experience, it that really what I'm up for (which may just be a bridge too far) or suggestions for other vet surgeries that might be a bit more reasonable.
