Pancreatitis

Recommended Posts

Hi.

My 6 year old Cocker Spaniel has been hospitalized for the past 5 days with severe Pancreatitis.

We have all been very upset but are hopeful she will be able to come home soon.

I read that Bone Broth is good for digestion, and even read some people use it for human pancreatitis.

Does anyone know if this is too fatty for a dog with pancreatitis?

I am obviously going to skim the fat off the top once its cooled, but is it still a fatty liquid? I will ask the vet obviously.

Also, I have read about Enzyplex for EPI, but would it be good for a case of Pancreatitis? I don't know what goes on with Enzymes when a dog

has Pancreatitis, but would they benefit from having that added in? I'm going to ask the vet this as well when I speak to him.

What do other people feed their dogs with Pancreatitis?

Do you work out the fat % just by going off the table on the back?

Is it important to be low in anything else besides fat? like Protein or Carbs?

Thanks so much for any replies.

Emily

Hi Emily, I can't answer your specific questions but if you do a forum search there are a few threads on pancreatitis here.

One of my Labs had severe pancreatitis and was in hospital for about 5 days too. She pulled through but had to stay off fatty food for life. Sending best wishes for your girl to recover and come home to you soon.

Wishing you and your girl all the best, mu girl had a brief stint with pancreatitis, so for her no more lamp flaps or anything resembling fat. Because I am trying to get a little weight of her I switched from one Canidae dry food to the weight management formula. Less fat and calories.

Thanks! I had never heard of canidae before, but there is a stockist right near me so Ill have a look. Apparently while in hospital my Cocker would only eat chicken, wouldn't touch the Royal Canin or Hills. Does anyone know about the Bone broth though, because I think that would be the key to getting her to eat the premade food, but I don't know if its inappropriate for dogs with Pancreatitis.

They rang me to tell me she could go home this afternoon but apparently 5 minutes before I arrived she vomited and had a temperature :(. Hopefully she is home soon.

No i wouldn't feed it when your dog comes home to will be crucial to keep the diet as bland as possible .

The vets will suggest the can range & yes some dogs wont eat it but its often the best choice until the dogs tummy has settled & no more attacks .

Your dog will be high risk of having another attack so you need to consider what gave her this attack ^ avoid it .

We have a breed highly predisposed to it & we hand out a diet sheet to suit but sadly many people don't follow it until there dog suffers from it

Don't give bone broth.. it's extremely fatty even skimmed!

Enzyplex may not be suitable.. the problem is the enzymes in the pancreas are activated prematurely and are effectively digesting the pancreas causing inflammation. In extremely severe cases this can then result in EPI (pancreatic insufficiency) in which case you do supplement but I haven't seen many cases that require this.

What will help your pup is a very low fat diet. Be extremely strict. She may cope better with a diet change outside of hospital environment.. I find they do tend to like the low fat royal canin GI cans.

She came home today!

She wont touch the Hills I/D low fat though, I tried a few different things to get her to have it but in the end I made her some boiled chicken and rice.

I'm going to the pet shop to look for different food to try tomorrow, any suggestions?

Is it ok for her to eat just chicken and rice?

You want as little fat in it as possible... and low salt...

Make sure the chicken is skinned and all fat removed if feeding that...

Keep trying with the vet prescribed food... she won't starve herself to death... she'll eat it eventually...
