We have found someone who is selling a mini dash puppy in our area and we are very interested however have some concern as to the claim that he is pure breed. The advert is claims the pups are pure breed and the owner is asking $1300, however she does also write that no papers come with the sale. As some crossbred pups can look to be purebred. So I guess the question is that are you comfortable with the breeder and what they are saying? Unfortunately no way to be sure then, you would just have to trust what they tell you. You could ask if the parents have pedigree papers that you could view to help reassure you, the pups may not be coming with papers as the breeder is not a registered breeder and therefore can't register pups, and/or the parents are not on the main register that allows breeding so pups can't be registered (parents could still be registered pure breeds on the limit register though). Without seeing the pedigrees/vet certificates ,you will also never be sure if the parents are free of relevant health issues which may be passed to pups ... corrie Posted August 27, 2016 Share Posted August 27, 2016 I may be way off base but the mum doesn't look pure to me but I'm not familiar enough with the breed to say that with confidence. If it is important to you that your new pup is pure I think you would probably be better off buying from a registered breeder then you could be sure. Other things to consider are what the temperament of the parents are like. How the puppies are raised and if this breed has any health issues that require the parents to be tested before breeding so as not to pass on anything genetic that can be avoided. Some genetic issues end up costing a lot of dollars and a lot of heartbreak so you really are doing the right thing by doing a bit of research before committing. Pjrt Posted August 28, 2016 Share Posted August 28, 2016 (edited) They look pure to me (as opposed to crossed) , but not well bred and typey If you have $1300 to plonk on one of these pups I'd suggest you start looking around for a registered breeder of pedigree Dachsund whose pups you can be assured of correct type, temperament, Heath testing and pure breeding, for not much more $$'s Use the home page link at the top of this page, and then the drop down breeds tab to find breeders, puppies and mature dogs for sale from registered breeders, as well as a call to your states canine registry, such as DogsNSW for info on breeders, breed clubs, and dog shows....all great places to find and source info on purebred dogs. ETA..... The lovely little Dachsund is an in vogue breed right now so it is especially beneficial to deal with a registered breeder who has been in love with them for many years, as opposed to someone who has jumped onto the profit wagon with a pair acquired from wherever they could get them with little or no health tests or much regard to the quality of the progeny....as long as they look like Dachsunds they're sure to make a quick buck in the current market. Nice people who breed healthy dogs (blah blah blah), she said, when I asked about pedigree. She scoffed at my advice re health checks. Cute puppy and nice little dog BUT riddled with health problems from when they got her. She has cost thousands and the various vets have no idea what is wrong. Vomits, chokes on all food, has almost died twice at vet surgeries during operations to find out what is wrong. Liver screwed and a few other things I can't think about right now. Every-time it goes to a vet (including specialists) they suggest something else, do lots of tests and almost kill the dog but they keep coming back with no diagnosis. My friend has decided to not take her back and put her down when they feel the time is right. Very sad and possibly something health checks would have picked up. Not certain but possibly. They have another mini, also backyard bred, who seems very healthy. So I guess the luck of the draw but better chances if heath checks completed.
