westiemum Posted July 2, 2016 Share Posted July 2, 2016 (edited) This morning Andy and Sarah were curled up together on the lounge (of course!) Andy and Sarah are such a bonded pair and like peas in a pod. Andy had his head across Sarah's back and his eyes closed - so cute. Andy in particular really depends on Sarah. But it got me thinking... while Sarah is fit and well, she is 15 next Wednesday and Andy will be just so devastated when she one day joins Mac at the Bridge (of course assuming she goes first). I had always assumed I'd get another adult westie hopefully before Sarah departs to ease Sarah's eventual departure for Andy. But in suggesting a greyhound to a friend this morning, I suddenly wondered what it would be like to adopt a greyhound as a companion for Andy? So putting it out to the DOL brains trust. Advice please? Would a grey work or should I stay with an adult westie? Just thinking it all through at this stage. TIA. grizabella Posted July 2, 2016 Share Posted July 2, 2016 A friend of mine has two little white fluffies with a greyhound and they love each other. Naturally, it would have to be right greyhound, and it would depend on how Andy gets on with bigger dogs. Some greys I know are as chilled out as it is possible to be, but then some individuals have a lot more bounce and might be more full on for a smaller dog. westiemum Posted July 2, 2016 Author Share Posted July 2, 2016 Hmn... certainly food for thought - but just because I'd love a grey it would have to be the right grey for Andy. Andy has come a very long way given he was a poorly socialised puppy farm rescue. And has coped very well with my fosters - but they have all been little dogs - most recently the beautiful Zac who was a beautiful long haired chi. So yes I'd be better off trying him with a grey somehow. (Maybe my friends might oblige and foster one through GAP!!) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She'd be able to answer any questions about them as well. grizabella that would be marvellous! If OK, I could also bring my friend who is looking for another dog and I'm trying to get her to consider a greyhound! I was out in my front garden the other day, and a lady walked past with a lovely quite little greyhound (yes it was a grey!) - she was just beautiful and I fell instantly in love! But only based on how well it worked out for us with a Rottweiler and a Poodle-cross, which many said was a poor choice of companion size and temperament. They were brilliant together. My old girl stands still when the other two take off, they know where she is and avoid her. Once the first frantic dash is over then Fern will join in. Having said that, you never know what life holds so I thought I'd consult the brains trust. Meanwhile Sarah is very insistently nuzzling me to massage her back! melzawelza Posted July 3, 2016 Share Posted July 3, 2016 (edited) All dogs are individuals, so I don't see any reason why two entire breeds of dogs, and all the varied personalities those umbrellas encompass, would be mutually exclusive. It's more a case of finding the right dog within a breed you're after, rather than knocking out whole breeds as unsuitable. Because you're considering adopting as an adult, that makes the process much easier. If you want a Greyhound, seek out a Greyhound with the temperament you need, and just be prepared to be a little patient if needed (or not at all, the first dog you see might be perfect!). mita Posted July 3, 2016 Share Posted July 3, 2016 My precious tibetan spaniel was the small dog tester for the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP). By the time they got to her, the greys had already passed many tests which predicted she'd be safe with them. And so she was. Running behind, beside & in front of the greys, their only worry was not falling over her. They were truly beautiful dogs, I could've taken each one home myself. Only worry for Angel was that she'd cry when put in the car to go home.... because her new 'friend' was going in another car.
