Enzi- Growing Up Chimp

 Share

Recommended Posts

Enzi was born on the 19th of October, 2015, bringing a ray of hope and joy in what had been a heartbreaking time for everyone involved with Monarto Zoo's chimpanzee family. Enzi's mother, Zombi, had up until that point been lovingly caring for another baby, orphaned baby Boon whose mother died from complications during labour. The passing of Soona was devastating, and the death not long after of her precious infant Boon made it a double tragedy that has been a huge challenge to deal with.

In the midst of all the sadness, beautiful little Enzi has lifted spirits and brought smiles to faces. Mum Zombi clearly loves her little man to pieces,'aunt' Galatea dotes on him, and three-year-old big sister Zuri has found a new playmate. In this thread I'll post photos of Enzi to show his growth and development over the months.

Here is some background information about recent events:

How much has Zuri grown lately? She's looking so grown up!

T.

She's growing like a weed! It all seems to have happened very suddenly. Since Enzi was born, she's not been over-groomed by her mum, so she's rather hairier, which makes her look bigger too.

Is Enzi smiling in one of those photos, do chimps smile?

Yes, chimps smile, often when they are playing. They laugh as well. :)If they have their teeth bared, that's a fear face rather than an actual smile. One of the things I love about chimps is how expressive they are.

Here's a smile:

And the same chimp with a fear grin:

And they pull faces too- this guy's favourite hobby is frightening children. He goes up to the window and beckons them over; when he's got them unsuspecting he jumps forward with a 'scary' face. He is referred to by people who know him well as 'Child Catcher William'. Chimps definitely have a sense of humour!

Haha! Love Child Catcher William... cheeky sod!

I love watching the Taronga chimps interact with young children through the glass areas of their enclosure... both sides of the glass are truly fascinated by each other, that's for sure!

Here are a few new pictures of the little man, now seven months old. :)

Zombi has recently been allowing Enzi more freedom to explore in the outdoor enclosure, and big sister Zuri has been happy to help show him the big wide world.

isn't it just SO wonderful to see Enzi ..and the others, exploring real growing plants /dead leaves , etc ? The photo of Zuri showing him the dead leaves ( and probably insects/spiders ) is my very favouritest pic :)

Check out those ears!! But he's still an incredibly handsome little dude, isn't he?

I think he looks a bit like Sudi at Taronga... it's the cheeky face... which is interesting 'cos they share some of the same genetics, yes? Sudi being Sandali's little nephew and all... *grin*

He is pretty cute, isn't he? :D I think he looks more like Sandali's side of the family than Zuri did as a baby. He has the family good looks! I love his long side-burns... wonder how long it will take for Zombi to groom them off.
