Scottsmum
popped in earlier and had a look at the update. Was wondering if she could have / would be interested in the smoothie thing WestieMum used to make Mac? Or possibly some nutragel as discussed here recently? *Avanti*
Poor girl, I hope she's on the mend and eating again real soon.
JulesP
She ate a tiny bit last night but didn't want to eat again this morning. I used some baby food in a squeezy tube to force feed her. The squeezy tube works really well for this for future reference if anyone else needs to do this. She did then lick some off my hand. Poppy thinks this is all the best thing ever as she gets some food each time too and gets to clean up the food Amber spits out!
sueang
She is drinking ok. Get the powder electrolyte from vets, make up in a jug of water & give every hour, buy the big 20ml syringe & give to her if she wont drink, my boy liked the electrolytes & loved drinking out of syringe... have you tried feeding low fat Cottage cheese or scrambled egg, tin salmon in spring water http://www.sofydog.com/product/food/Home%20Prepared%20Dog%20Food%20Recipes.htm
Stitch
I totally agree Sueang, Lectade has been invaluable to my lot over the years. As you would know when they are not eating it is very important they drink regularly and Lectade also replaces the electrolytes. I always keep that in the cupboard. JulesP
I have said she is drinking. Drinking a lot is a) a symptom of pyometra and b) she has been on diuretics.

The squeeze tube is a great idea, I will tuck that one away for next time Bruno won't eat. One thought I had, is it worth looking into getting the vet to give her a shot of vitamin B12? Bruno doesn't have liver shunts but has multiple allergies and is in remission from 'Boxer colitis' and was anorexic for periods of time in his younger years. Injections of B12 did help him short-term with some of his symptoms, including his lack of appetite. He would regain an appetite within 24 hours. Sorry if I'm right off-track, it was just a thought. I really hope Amber starts eating again soon.
JulesP
Got some brie and water crackers and she agreed to eat some crackers! I've been pretending to sit outside and 'eat' in the hopes of tricking her into eating some of 'my' food but obviously she wasn't fooled. She seems a little better. The discharge has stopped but not sure if that is a good thing or not. Maybe it all came out yesterday. I now have to consider the fact that the chances are high that she will get this again. But if I get her desexed she may not make it through the surgery. Or she could die from her liver condition before it can happen again. Dogs with her condition just don't normally make it this long so it is rather uncharted waters for everyone. If she had a closed pyometra and it was a try surgery or she dies then I would do the surgery. Hard to send a bright looking dog into surgery knowing she might not wake up. *kirty*
If you have to desex her, I would get a specialist to do it or at the very least get a specialist to work out an anaesthetic regime for her.

Tassie
Likewise - just catching up. So sorry she's been so poorly .. but eating chicken with baby food dressing sounds as though the a/bs might be kicking in and she's feeling a bit better. Do hope so. Can only begin to imagine how worries you are .. she's a pretty special survivor, thanks to your care, but as you say, uncharted waters.
sueang
I have said she is drinking. Drinking a lot is a) a symptom of pyometra and b) she has been on diuretics. Cause she isn't eating her electrolytes will drop, her sugar will drop, so you add the electrolyes to her water. The electrolytes give her what she normally gets from food & will make her start feeling better...

JulesP
She came and hassled me this morning whilst I was having my cuppa in bed, first time in a week! Ate a little bit of breakfast, went for a short walk and then came and asked for lunch! Fingers crossed the antibiotics totally clear it up. Get up Mum!
