Amber Isn't Well

Sorry to hear this is ongoing, Jules... what a worry! :(

I understand the fear of surgery, I have Gomez with a heart condition and it's something I always worry about if he's looking poorly... 'will this end in surgery and him not making it?'

My vet told me that with his heart condition it usually isn't the surgery where they lose them, but in the following few weeks due to the heart having gone under stress and being knocked out of it's steady state and into a decline. Is that the same with the liver shunts, or is it more an 'on the table' situation with the risks? Either way, an awful gut-wrenching fear... but at least if it's just during surgery if she pulls through that then you're over that hurdle at least! When is surgery booked for?

There are 2 risks during surgery itself. 1 - the GA - this is processed through the liver and she just might not wake up 2 - a clotting risk, her bloods have indicated that her clotting is ok and I'll have Poppy on stand by for a blood transfusion. Then just small things like her having little body fat so she could get too cold and they need to think about what painkillers she can have.

Principal vet is confident but can't obviously give a 100% guarantee. They have all the protocol from the specialists and I think this American forum. They are having a vet monitor her GA

If she pulls through the surgery then afterwards he liver might not be great. But without the infection her whole system should be better. We don't know when she will die from the liver condition anyway, that could be any day. And as everyone tells me she is on borrowed time as it is.

It is just really bad timing with me being sick too. And being retrenched isn't helping either.

I know "there there, chin up love" wont help - but the positive there is you don't have to worry about missing work to be with her.

That would be true if I had worked in an office or had set hours

They are monitoring her until 5 to see if she can come home or if they think she needs to go to an overnight place.

I'm almost tempted just to send her to the overnight place (for me as much as her!) but I know she would rather be home.

That's one for the vet and you ... It's a tricky one - cos if she's still a bit dopey , and sore and feeling ill , she may benefit from the warmth and drip and observation ? Obviously if she's brighter and walking ..then home would probably be a happier place :D

She needs to be off the drip apparently. She has to have different painkillers. The principal vet said if she woke up etc that it would then be no different from a normal spey. I think the other vets are a little anxious, lol. It is nice they care so much.

Normally I would be quite confident about looking after her.

Amazing news jules! So glad the the little fighter continues to live another day :)

If amber is a bit groggy etc then I'd leave her in care overnight. If she's home and you're stressed it might make her stress too after all.
