Carita
This is the 3rd time in probably the last 12 months that my CKCS has had blood stain in her urine. She is 8 &1/2 years old & has been treated by the vet both times preceding today's occurrence. She's had bladder & kidney scans which show no stones & was prescribed Cepphalexin 300mg She shows no signs of discomfort I'll get her to the vet again but thought someone here might have an idea what this could be apart from an UTI
_PL_
Has she had a full pathology blood panel done?
Carita
Thanks Powerlegs for your reply. According to the invoices, she only had urinalysis lH, PCV-lH & a scan What does lH mean? She'd been treated for this in both November & again in December. I was considering changing vets but now this issue has returned , I dont know if i should stay with her old vet. *kirty*
IH means in-house. They haven't sent bloods or urine off, they have just done an in-house test.
Carita
Thanks *kirty* it would appear that a full panel was not done then.
Rappie
Thanks *kirty* it would appear that a full panel was not done then. If the invoice line item is actually all that was done the they have run an in house urinalysis (which may or may not have included a sediment examination), a PCV (which is a basic measure of red blood cell levels) and whatever the scan was (could be full abdominal or just bladder focussed). If there is an issue with recurrent haematuria (blood in the urine) then a urine culture and sensitivity (to confirm the problem is due to infection and if so, that the antibiotics are correct), blood testing and abdominal imaging (ultrasound or radiographs) are recommended. The imaging seems to have been done already so the other testing is indicated - also a thorough physical exam to see if there are any physical or anatomical factors contributing. Carita
Thank you Rappie, I think the scan was just kidneys & bladder. They collected a urine sample. Pcv 41 Sp g? 1.045 Ph 7 Prot Blood trace I noticed the blood trace this time after seeing the urine puddle on the road, I put a tissue over it & it went a light shade of pink. Sorry for the late response. Personally I don't like treating recurrent things without more testing. :) Of course, vets start with the basics because it could be something simple so they have done the normal thing. However as Rappie said, there's more to do and at her age I'd be going for further testing.

CavsRcute
My Cavalier had 3 bouts of Uti's with blood in her urine and also struvite crystals and a very high PH level. After she finished the antibiotics I put her on cranberry tablets and she didn't have any more problems in 6 years. And no stones, crystals and the PH went back to normal. A full blood panel, sterile urine collection (cystocentesis- needle straight into bladder) for urinalysis and culture for starters, full abdominal ultrasound and if nothing shows and the issue continues referral to a medicine specialist. Carita
CavsRcute, your words are encouraging. She has more antibiotics & is now on cranberry caps & my fingers crossed this will see her into good health. Not having a car makes these issues a real challenge. A friend that was going to take her to a new vet had her own issues & had to back out. It wasnt until today that I realised I couldve hired a car so I couldve taken her to a vet myself. If the problem continues then I'll do just that. I really appreciate all replies . My Cavalier had 3 bouts of Uti's with blood in her urine and also struvite crystals and a very high PH level. CavsRcute
If you are over the north side of Sydney, happy to help a fellow Cavalier owner with transport if needed to go to the vet.
Carita
CavsRcute, your kindness overwhelms me. Tissues are without blood stains when they soak up her urine so I mightve caught it early. She is such a loving cav & has had a sad history, which has me hoping for a wonderful future for her. I adopted her from the pound 6 years ago weighing just 6kg. She was emaciated. There was dried food in her enclosure but she had been trained not to eat without a certain word. That word didnt come with her. Friends donated Nutrigel & she lived on that for a week apart from what I gave her from my plate. I used to fill my plate so there was enough for 2 & hand fed her. Then one day I was slicing frozen chicken thigh & dropped a piece . Oh happy days it was when she ate that & has been eating it for the past 6 years. She was 2yrs old according to her microchip but the phone number had been disconnected. The address given was rural nsw about 7 hours away from where the ranger had picked her up from a main suburban road. I believe she lived with an old man & she loved him. At first she would get very excited when she saw an old bloke with a white beard, but would appear sad for 2 or 3 days afterwards. I have no idea how long she had been without a carer to have become so thin & at first , to be scared of the dark. She deserves a nice future. *kirty*
Is she only eating chicken? Plain chicken meat on its own is not a healthy or balanced diet.

My first girl I rescued from the RSPCA in Queensland. She was A Blenheim and had been used as a breeding machine. When she got too old she was dumped. She didn't know what grass was all about and would only wee on the concrete and curled up with newspaper She was 6 when I got her and I had great fun with her for the next 5 years. They are the most wonderful dogs and can't wait until I can get another one. Hope everything continues to go well.
