I'm also currently using an ice cream container which happens to fit perfectly in the end space of his crate between his bed and the door - for treats and a scoop ofdry when he's locked in his box. Also I can put the lid on it and take it away when/if I need to - but I have an old dog who doesn't destroy things (other than carpet but that's another post) but he does like to carry plastic food containers away if I give them to him - which is another negative in my view. I've always just had them because they tend to look nicer and last longer. Terracotta bowls are good at keeping water cool in summer if its outdoor, but all of my bowls are just stainless steel. Mjosa Posted March 17, 2016 Share Posted March 17, 2016 I use stainless steel dog bowls for my crew, they have a rubber ring around the bottom to stop the bowl from slipping away. The reason for stainless steel? well when cleaning the bowls I can pour boiling water into them and I know then that there will not be any nasties hanging around in scratched plastic, would not use plastic for a puppy, more hygenic. They do not cost the earth and can be purchased at a reasonable cost, about $7, from Woolworths Coles or the cheap $2 shops. Willem Posted March 17, 2016 Share Posted March 17, 2016 I also use stainless steel and avoid materials that can break (e.g. glass)...however, it seems to be a total waste of money as she just prefers to drink the water from buckets, garden saucers, puddles etc....can't figure out why and try to keep them dry, but after every rain she's back to the 'alternatives'... The melamine with stainless insert is fantastic too. Then there's ceramic which I love. Pop into Kmart, they have deep flat based cereal bowls for $2 Dishwasher safe. Didn't see you'd linked already. Have used them a lot over the years - "upgraded" to the noodle bowls for Scottie - he's a bit too bit for the cereal bowls. A cat rescue in NSW uses them a lot too. Quinn has managed to smash ceramic and supposedly "unbreakable" melamine. But dry food is rarely in a bowl, it goes in a Kong Wobbler, an empty plastic drink bottle squished so she has to bat it around to get the food out, scattered around the floor or hand fed with a bit of training slotted in - from a bowl it is inhaled in two seconds! Easy to throw in the dishwasher and the good quality ones last forever (I have some about 20 years old that are still as good as when they were bought). For water I use either stainless steel buckets, plastic 'road refresher' bowls for non spill, and outside, glazed water pots from the garden centre as they are heavy and hold plenty of water while also helping to keep it cool.
